- In this video we go through the safe isolation process at a light switch. We seek permission, identify the circuit, isolate the correct 6 amp MCB, secure isolation, place a sign and lock off. Using the correct GS38 voltage indicator and proving unit we prove the light switch is isolated before it can be replaced.

'Here's your invoice, Mum. £200. That's £20 to change the dimmer and £180 to check I'd turned off the breaker...' 🤣🤣
I’ve encouraged my teenage grandson who would become a 3rd gen electrician, to watch these videos, they’re simplified so learners can understand how low voltage single phase supply to the home works. I know the more experienced electrician may wish to “critique” these short videos at the expense of the creator, it’s really not about YOU. Another great short Gary we’re subscribed and watching, have a great week 👍
Massive thanks for the great comment and subscribing 👍🏻
Nice to see a video for people showing good LOTO practice.
Informative video. Thanks. Yes, would like to see a video about consumer units under the stairs.
Good video Gaz,
This isn't taught at college so helps to see another way of proving safe isolation at the point you will be carrying out the work.
Keep up the good work mate
Thanks Dean 👍🏻
Has someone put in LED light bulbs and the dimmer won’t work. In the past if I fit a consumer unit in a cupboard I normally fit a smoke detector in the same cupboard. Hands up how many people have changed a switch without isolating the circuit.
Treat everything as if live. Connect earth first, neutral second, and hot last.
Thanks for commenting and watching 👍🏻
I'm pretty sure on most approved voltage testers these days they're made that a proving unit is not needed and only the 2 ends need to be touched together. On the fluke they are not sure about the Megger but bet they are.
Yes, my Fluke tester does...and it's only a 'cheap' one. Hold the probes together for a few seconds before and after testing and it lights up like Blackpool illuminations!
Hi Gaz,
Great video as always 👍 Thought I’d better mention though, especially being your mums house, that 7 out of the 11 MCBS are actually on the product safety recall list, I’ve seen quite a few of these burnt out over the years and they should really be swapped out ASAP. Didn’t hear you mention it, so not sure If you missed it or not ? 🤔
The board was purchased before 2004 the recall is on 2009 - 10 devices I will take at look into. Massive thanks for commenting 👍🏻 Gaz. My mum could do with an upgrade because of the boards location 🤦🏻♂️
@@GSHElectrical thanks for your reply to my comment Gaz, I knew it wouldn’t be something that you would overlook 👍
That does raise an interesting question though, how do we know if they were manufactured between those dates, as I am unable to see a manufacturing date on the MCB itself ? Might have to contact Wylex regarding that, as I’ve just been automatically replacing any with the codes NSB06 NSB10 and NSB16.
👍👍👍👍👍
Was the clever electrician you? Haha
I have a question , random to this video hoping someone can help .
Let’s say I have a three phase fryer for a restaurant and I have ran a 6mm NYY 5 Core Cable contained throughout in metal trunking (trunking is earthed at every join with a link wire) it is controlled via a TRIPLE POLE C32 MCB which then goes to a ROTARY ISOLATOR THEN TO A COMMANDO SOCKET ALL INSIDE METAL TRUNKING AS MENTIONED , can I get away without a 30ma RCD as it has mechanical protection through out ?? Would really appreciate some feedback
Any CU in the stairs cupboard is a dum idea.
You could prove your voltage indicator on a none source such as the bulkhead light as it is on a different circuit. As not every have proving units .
But this is a great video for learners to get it into there heads just how important safe isolation is . Hard tex ceiling yuk that’s so 70s 😂
Great video as always Gaz👍👍👍❤️
What if they used wagos for the neutrals, how would you prove safe isolation 🤔
They have a test point on them
My house is wired wired its wired front and back
Dual RCD board.....nice!
NOT,
And plastic and under the stairs no SPD the list goes on…
@@GSHElectrical maybe you should do your mum a favour Gaz
and change that CU for her . You do want your mum to safe .don’t you.
