My biggest pet peeve is people being scared to fail... honestly, don’t let people’s opinion hurt your performance. Get on stage, and have fun!☺️
Hey mine too ......
You've said all 👍
Honestly, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people judge other people's playing, the gear they have, etc. I especially hate it when someone says that using a single pedal is more skillful than double. It honestly doesn't matter, it's just the type of grooves or music you're into.
Teague McChesney ahh, just begins an enlightening conversation...
Teague McChesney actually none of that really matters anyways. A drummers Tempo is the most important thing.
Teague McChesney a single pedal is more skillful tho
@@maxcraft7038 This is very true! Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus uses mostly single peddle and he's a fucking pro at that thing. He makes Lars Ulrich sound like an amateur. lmao
dropping the stick while playing
Oh yeah. Or actually throwing it, lol.
There’s also an issue that affects people from about age 45, that I feel I should warn drummers about.
I’ve been recently diagnosed with a medical condition called “Plantar Fasciitis”, more commonly known as “Policeman’s Foot”.
It’s a common issue with pain in the heel areas of both feet. It’s caused by standing too long in one spot for long periods of time. The pain is worse, first thing in the morning.
When the doctor asked me if I stood for long periods of time. I said not really, but when I got home & had time to think it over, I had to change my answer.
I like to have the TV going while I stand up practicing on my practice pad. I’ve modified my stand & practice pad so I can elevate it to the right height. Anyway, I realized that sometimes I’ll be standing up practicing, anywhere from 1, 2 or even 3 hours straight. I’ve done it this way for many, many years.
I’ve now modified practicing like that & only do about 15 minutes straight standing up. I’ve set up a drum stool in the lounge so I can sit & practice whilst watching TV. I’ve found that the heel pain has improved since modifying how I practice.
I hope none of you ever get it, because it is real annoying.
i had that but not no more because i got the brace that go on your foot from medical store
I never had to get the brace, luckily for me.
I just had to modify the way I was practicing.
ok cool
I happen to be a drummer and my biggest pet peeve is when my fellow drummer friends try to make a fill out of the whole song
Yea, agree with you on that one
I'm a beginner, thank you for the advice. That sounds like a show-off, lol.
I know it may not be a good way to deal with it, but I used to have wrist pain in my left hand and then full all around pain in my right hand/arm when playing. I simply kept playing over the pain and felt my hands got stronger with time. I figured it was like going to the gym, there would always be pain at first. I no longer feel any pain even when playing hard on the drums.
When a non-drummer member of the band tries to tell you how to play.
Yeah, agreed; there are people who give good insight but there's also people who try to micromanage; that's a pet peeve of mine too when they cross that line
I found that a peeve myself until I realised it's not that they don't think you've got the ability to perform the song but rather they want you to play it differently from how you play it thru experience you get to realise that the drums are a real instrument and to allow fellow musicians to direct you in certain parts of the songs. Thru time a good drummer will be able to help direct other members in certain parts of a song as they mature. Sorry for long rant dude.
philip mcevoy Haha no problem, I appreciate the input. I agree with you, I made that comment partially in jest; I often find that the best way to determine my strengths as a drummer is by non-drummers’ reactions - if they can relate to something purely musical aside from technical know-how, I know I’m doing it right.
Great lesson Stephen! I've been having problems with my wrist, and I realized now that it might be the fact that I'm using french grip to play hardcore pop/punk music.
I'll tell you from experience...that very well could be your issue. Try switching over to American and see if you see any improvement.
yeahp.. this is my problem... I play for at least 14 years, and the last time that I had some problema like this, was around 12 years ago.. and I've changed my grip.. but about 2 months ago I started to feeling again the same pain..
and the thing was: i get excited to play Motorhead in a band cover and without noticing, change my grip to french, to hav more power on the beat... and now i have show to do and about 1 month to fix this.. hehehe
Stephen, as I said to Leo .. this video makes me realese that i really get wrong without noticing.. so, Thank you very much for this video.. i know for sure that's gonna help me alot...
I love it! 20 Years I'm going back to my marching band here in Philippines. I Practiced too much these week lately. Thnx Bro I can go to Tomorrow and try these for my front drummers
Elbow and sometimes shoulder pain from 16th notes on high hat. Your advice helped! Thank you!
Laying in bed right now with a sore shoulder from this exact problem!
Great lesson Stephen, thanks for taking the time to explain those very important and usually ignored aspects of drumming.
love your content and advice, thank you🧡🙏
thanks stephen:) just what i needed! got these problems myself
Great video. I tore my TFCC in my wrist and this was very insightful. Hoping this helps. Thank you!
Thank you, you’re the best!
Such a great video! Need to turn my wrist slightly. Also my friend Josh Freese told me.."Let the P.A. do the work..relax!" Thanks for another awesome video!!
Thanks for the tip! 👍
thanks for this really help me
i just started getting leg cramp on my bass playing leg i always get it on my tigh first a fell pain and then i get like a feeling that my leg is gana have a cramp on my uper tigh
Thanks for the helpful video; I was using only fringe grip
Didn't realize matched grip itself contained different styles. My left wrist ends up killing me sometimes, and I will from time to time switch to a traditional grip because it doesn't hurt, however my accuracy gets worse because I'm not very good with traditional grip. Hearing him discuss French grip being unfit for rock music just might help, as my left wrist is constantly going the way he says.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when I feel like I am getting somewhere in my rehearsal/practice and I start having pain in my heel from the kick drum. I currently have Achilles tendonitis, Peroneal tendonitis, a partial tear to my Peroneal tendon, and my Peroneal tendon slides out of place when I move the foot. You've talked about wrist and arm pain a whole bunch, do you have any videos about the lower leg, ankle and foot?
I had tennis elbow and an injury to my tricep ( which prevented me from reaching around my Toms) both on my left arm ( I'm a right handed drummer so it was my snare arm ). 6 Active release sessions basically did nothing for me at all. What got rid of it was remedial massage. It took about 7 sessions
I often get quite bad pain in my finger joints that feels like I'd imagine arthritis would feel, any suggestions for if it actually IS arthritis, or what can help in any case?
hey there Stephen. I love playing drums i gig every weekend and i love it. It'ts been like that for the last 4-5 years, always enjoy it but around the beginning of last year i started noticing NUMBNESS AND TINGLING by the 3-4 song and i have to kind of play with 1 hand and constantly switch off until it goes away. That only happens on fast songs though not slow songs. Its annoying, I've never really had any injuries or anything so i'm kind of confused how it happened from one day to another. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks....
I’m grade 4 in drums and I’m learning tangled and my biggest pet peeve is when I get pain in my upper arm muscle cuz of acid idk how to stop it
Are you supposed to feel a burn (not painful burn) in your forearm while doing wrist speed exercises? are you still improving even if you dont feel the burn?
I don't really have arm or wrist pain as much as I used to, but I am getting leg pain, specifically right leg which plays the bass drum. Any tips?
I hit with heel. But my knees were not parallel as you say.Now I'll pay attention to that! THANKS MAN. I APPRECIATE:)
Sometimes when i'm playing for a long time, i get a pain at the top of my spine, it's like a sort of hot ache? like burning sensation.. doesn't anyone else get that? I'm sure it's from improper posture.. it's always after like a couple of hours which i assume is just where i'm getting a little tired.
As a newbie drummer using french grip on ride is making risk sore. Is this normal?
Setting up! Takes forever!!!!!!!
I'll make sure of it next time.
I really need help. My wrists hurt a lot when i air drum in front of the mirror. Is this improving my wrist strength; is it good pain on muscle? Or bad pain that's only causing me harm?
I am having a pain on my right hand, not wrist not arm. It's exactly above wrist as you're looking at the upper side of hand (not palm) slightly to the left. It doesnt show up until after 1-2 minutes at 120bpm playing 16th notes on drum snare (of course the pain comes whatever i play but i had to give an example of the scale). I am on a marching band and the pain first appeared after hitting the snare constantly harder than i probably should. Lastly i use the grip that the palms are looking down and the pain is smoother if i use french grip. Any ideas on that?
Any advice on thumb pain in the snare hand? I'm positive I need to adjust my grip but I'm hoping for more info as my last show was hard to get through.
Hard to give you more info without seeing whats going on. But yes, in short, it sounds like you need to immediately look at your technique. If you're feeling that much pain, there are big issues and you're going to hurt yourself. You may want to see a doctor to make sure you don't have a hairline fracture on that thumb. If the pain continues after the gig, go see someone. You can email help@stephensdrumshed, reference this conversation, and we'll see what we can do to get your grip fixed.
awesome video this may help me with my wrist issue i think its grip I think
Thanks. This has been an ongoing issue for me.
I have a problem, when the hi hat is fast for a long time, my forearm hurts and can't handle the tempo, so I miss 3720 notes and end up off the beat... I don't know if its cramps or I just hit the hi hat the wrong way... But ever since I stop, the pain instantly goes away.
I think I should get stronger arms...
My pet peeve is seeing people younger than me playing a lot better. I just get so jealous. Because I'm 23, I started drumming a year ago. I'm happy with my own progress, for sure, but I'm afraid that I won't get to be a professional drummer. I want to at least be able to gig or record or something like that at some point. I wish I could only practice drums all day and never have to work a job I don't like. But unfortunately that's my life. I can't quit my job and I can't play drums as much as I want. The thought that it's going to be like this for the rest of my life is scary.
I'm 37 and I just started. You're fine kid, don't worry about age. Music is not a race.
I got wrist pain by using the french grip while playing metal music.. switched to german and my wrist is like reborn.
I stay 15 hours a day at the PC so I got carpal tunnel for sure but with german grip is a lot better
How do i feel the songs
hey Steven, in your opinion what are the pros and cons of practicing with heavy sticks on a pillow versus a practice pad? do they both help progress for control and speed and ect....
My personal opinion? I don't like using bigger/heavier sticks. I find that when I switch back to my normal sticks, there is an adjustment period where I'm becoming reacclimated to the new (lighter, smaller, etc.) stick. I prefer working on my technique and pursuing speed and power that way. I do like occasionally practicing on a pillow to work the muscles involved, but I always use my regular sticks to do that. Hope that helps a bit Jonathan...btw, that's my brothers name ;^)
Stephen Taylor thank you so much.. i have been trying to do more hand and foot exercises. i want to have more control, accuracy and speed.. thanks for all you do
Stephen Taylor sorry for wording..
Sir can u explain me to kick fast with out upper leg pain and toe pain plz
And can u make a vedio for the right leg posture for kicking plzzz
Blisters and calluses are the only things that I get from playing. I've tried bandages and tape, but I play right thru them. Any cures?
Usually after drumming for half an hour. My wrist gets these weird shocks when I hit the hi tom. Idk why
Thanks, just got a kit and had some sharp pains in my thumb (joint below the nail). I guess need to switch from French to American or German grip. Have to find a teacher.
Yea, you need to address your grip. You shouldn't be having any pain
I'm suffering from drumming/biking/typing induced tennis elbow - I've been using, ice, creams, tennis elbow bands & braces... you name it - finally got it under control but keeps coming back when I play a lot. Stretching, lots of ice, Ibuprofen, Camphor and Menthol cream and warm up and change snare drum height...
My main pet peeve is losing a stick while im playing. Its not really that big of a deal but I find it so frustrating! Like youre doing great things, jamming out, feeling good, and all of a sudden your stick is on the other side of the room lmao
My right wrist is fused so this is very helpful
Hey new drummer, I feel this pain but don't think that my technique is wrong, am I just building the necessary muscles?
What can I do if I have finger pain?
My left wrist (snare) hurts on the right side. It hurts only after 10 minutes of playing and when i stop drumming it stops hurting too. I don't feet the pain in everyday stuff. only while drumming. Before i start playing i always do streching of my wrist. When it starts to hurt i do another stretching and sometimes it helps.
AcerManAcer same problem but I am having it now did you figured out the solution yet ??
My first week of practice I drummed for 2 hours everyday. I had such pain in my left arm (my arm I use for hihat and ride) I thought oh shit! I'm having a heart attack!! No chest pains but just shoulder and forearm pain and my hand was cramped..so I went to the ER...I strained alot of muscles in my arm and back to where there were constantly tense and tight. So I was told to either lay off the drums or rethink my grip and position when playing. Anyone else out there have any tips on how to loosen up? I love drums and still play thru the pain.
Great video, but how to you prevent blisters from drum sticks??
You're gonna need to look at your technique. That's the issue 99% of the time.
I don’t have a pet peeve but, my right wrist is the only one that ever locks up and it hurts a lot. Travis Barker is my biggest inspiration in drumming and I find myself doing lots of beats that he does and I can keep a fast tempo but only for about two songs.
I play tenors in my high school drumline and we have long rehearsals at very high speeds. After a while my wrist starts to hurt, it is starting to worry me. Its been about 4 days and it doesn't feel better.
We use heavy sticks as well
I know this is an old video, but I developed a golf ball sized elbow by playing too long and not being used to it, and also I had my right side crash at an awkward angle.
Is it normal for my fore arms to start kind of itching in a very annoying way and it kind of burns... And if I don't stop every 5 minutes or scratch my fore arms start getting bigger. :/
Setting up, taking down and transporting thw whole kit :s .
Hey Steven, when I'm playing drums i start getting like a cramp or tense feeling between my thumb and index finger do you have any advice on that
Yea, you're gripping the stick too tightly there. I have a playlist on my channel on hand technique. I think it will help with that.
Stephen Taylor Thanks Steven can you send the link to the video I'd appreciate it
When I first started playing I use to hate when other drummers would come to our church and rearrange my WHOLE kit when the visiting soloist/choir's turn came up to perform and not fix it back when they got off and I had to put it all back in like 30secs or less when it was time for me to play again during the service.
Umm excuse me I would like to ask you How do you stop wrist pain, arm pain, and preventions?
i get pain in my right arm tendon while i play. Im a new drummer and I'm wondering if this is a setup issue or a technical problem?
I would check out setup first, then move to technique
thanks man
What about calluses....Why do I get them from playing? How can I prevent them?
You need to look at your technique. I have a course on that in the members are on my website. Jojo Mayer also has an excellent dvd on this topic. But that’s the issue.
Stephen Taylor does this go for blisters too? You know those little bubbles you get with water in em?
I don't have any specific pet peeve...I have multiple. Stick clicking, dropping sticks, fingers giving out for some odd reason on my left hand, and not being fast to the point where I want to be (210bpm +)
My left hand! :D But i'm working on it.
cool
we had a big show for our high school football game last night, my wrist is killlllling me. anything i should do, i’m playing rainbow so i don’t rly have time to watxh the vid😂
I have wrist pain in right hand after playing for even an hour. I'll try a different grip tomorrow, hope that helps!
You need to look at your technique. Without seeing you play I can't say for sure, but this is most likely the root cause of the issue.
***** I think so. I'm a beginner deummer so I must have a lot of technique issues. Thanks for reply!
Tuning the snare
This video is great!!!! I play drums in a semi popular band and I’m not even that good 😂 I recently have been suffering with carpaltunnel and severe cramps in my left hand 😬 I’m now considering lessons to just to get help with my grip and technique lol
My drumming pet peeve: when everything is amplified (very loudly) besides the drums, and everyone keeps asking you to play louder because they can't hear the drums. Not once have I ever heard someone say, "if we can't hear the drums, and it isn't micd up, then lets lower the amplified instruments and mics a bit to balance everything out." If I suggest lowering volumes, people look at me like I killed their puppy.
I don't know why but I get blisters on my fingers. Please, someone help!
You've got a technique issue. Start there
Okay thank you
same mate
Ur hitting them 2 hard, or just carry on. Your fingers will get tougher
Goat Head yeah lol that was three years ago
I only get wrist pain when I play Hallowed Be Thy Name because its constant 16ths on the hi hats lmao
Been practicing everlong by too fighters and my right wrist is killing me. I'm afraid its my technique
Probally dude. Its an easy one to get tight on.
+bymyself11 My bandmates were harping on me about playing everlong. Funny thing is, they couldn't play it worth a shit either.
Same issue here :/
I play a lot a fast hi hat grooves with two hands...what you wanna do is try to play with a fluid motion using all of the muscles in your arm. It's almost like you're spreading out the work in your arm, that way you don't use only one muscle, therefore giving you more stamina before your wrist starts to hurt
Thanks Will Smith. You actually had a helpful comment, unlike Andrew Greer "it's an easy one to get tight on"
Blood blisters on pointer fingers. Pretty sure it’s from gripping the sticks incorrectly, trying to fix it but in a gig it’s not the first thing on my mind
Yes, that's a grip issue that shouldn't be happening. Feel free to email me at stephen@stephensdrumshed.com and I'll take a look to see what you've got going on.
My biggest pet peeve is when you ask someone not to touch your cymbals with their bear hands and they still do it because if you touch the cymbals with your hand and don't wipe them back off they will go out of tone and stay out of tone
My pet peeve is playing anything faster than 150 bpm. Brings out the arm pain
my problem is that I have great technique but by about 2 hours into a 4 hour gig, my muscles give out and I tense up even if I'm conscious not to. Then, I have sore wrist and ankle muscles for like 4 days so I'm unable to practice more than like 1-2 days a week
I've been doing a lot of rudimental work on a practice pad and some double kick practice too but Idk if it's helping. I'm definitely a lot faster, don't know about stamina though
Agreed on your pet peeve;_) . Amen brotha!
My biggest pet peeve is drumming to a fast sond and not being fast enough while continuously falling back on the rhythm.
And if the hi-hat is supposed to be played quickly, my arm starts to get stiff and unresponsive.
It’s SO FRUSTRATING!
It's Mr. "Bucket of fisssshh!" :D
HOW DO YOU DRUM WITHOUT GETTING CALLUSES???? please answer me! I've been wanting to know for months!
Hey Johnny...well, if you're having that big of an issue with calluses, you're gonna need to assess your technique on a deeper level and how you're striking the drums. I have some free stuff on my channel to help but if you're wanting to take a deep dive you'll want to jump over to the lessons on my website. Hope that helps a bit!
Okay , Thank you!
what about hand blisters
That's a technique/grip issue that should be looked at
My pet peeve is when my double kick beater kicks back and hits my shins.
My pet peeve as a drummer is when I'm playing with a band and I'm not playing set but the drummer is playing too fast or too slow. I just want to be like BRO JUST GET UP AND LET ME PLAY DAMN.
Agree, bad timing in a drummer is the worst
When I can't seem to get my throne in the spot I want it and keep moving it after every song
When I play drums my index finger on my right hand starts to hurt... I don't know why ?
That would probably have to do with your technique. I know that's a general answer, but that's where you need to start to deal with this issue. Hope that helps!
no 1 pet peeve is that i cant really play the drums :(( i just dont sound musical enought... i just hit them and sound comes out and it sucks :( i only make sounds, not music :( i hate it
When your trying to play don’t stop me now and you get tired within the first minute or just fast songs in general
My pet peeve is that with thinner drumsticks (5a) i feel my hand hurt way faster than with thicker drumsticks (5b)
I hate when the tip of my stick chips and when I'm playing on the ride it sounds really soft.
When my foot spazzes when i'm doing 8th's on the kick lol
blisters
I’ve been frenching my left hand to hell
My knees are killing me everytime I play for a long time, too:(
I have bass drum knee pain after i play
Look at your setup. You may be sitting too low (or too high). You may also have something called Runners Knee which has to do with a tight IT band running up your thigh. Obviously, I'm no doctor but i would start by looking at those things. Seeing as it only appears after you play, it's most likely something that is situational to how you're playing/sitting/lack of stretching proper muscles.
Pet peeve in drumming is having to play brown Eyed Girl
My pet peeve is when people hit the kick and the snare at the same time
