Big Mystery of the Adjustable Toilet Flapper Solved

  • This big mystery puzzled me for weeks. I bought an adjustable flapper ($5 Universal PerforMAX High Performance Toilet Flapper water saving flapper). It has an adjustable dial for a customized water use per flush. But I can't figure out why it should work. It looks symmetrical when adjusted from min to max. I asked the following people about it: Home Depot sale people, plumbers and a lot of my DIY type friends, none of them could answer with a reasonable theory ( • Question: How does the... ). I finally figured it out through many experiments. I am sharing this with you since I have wasted a lot tanks of water in my experiments.
    Once we have figured out how the adjustable flapper works, we can also convert our non-adjustable flapper into an adjustable one, enabling you to experiment with the idea first without multiple trips to Home Depot. And of course it saves your money!!

    You are my hero! I tried for 20 minutes to figure out how a symmetrical dial connected to nothing on a hollow bulb with nothing inside could possibly adjust the flap open time, and had to give up and just finish fixing my toilet months ago. I searched the internet, too, but somehow missed your video. It popped into my head again just now, and I found you, and finally I can sleep again :-D

    Thank you! Your video helped me to understand that if I modded the flapper so the hole is all the way in the back so that it's at its lowest possible position when the flapper is raised, the flapper stays up longer. Now I have better water flow.

    Loved your idea to put the weight on the non-adjustable flapper! We had a flapper that was sticking in the up position, but it only took a few metal washers to make it drop like new. Thanks for this -

    I had the adjustable flapper for several years, it worked good but eventually it stopped sealing well, so I bought another one, for some reason it didn't work right, it worked like a regular flapper, changing the setting didn't change the amount of water it used, after hours of playing with it I gave up, then I got the next months water bill, I used hundreds more gallons of water, so I'm back to trying figure out why it doesn't work, I just realized after watching this video why it doesn't work, the plastic plug that goes in the big hole is missing, maybe it fell out, I don't know, but at least now I know why it didn't work right, they do save a lot of water when they work right.

    Have never seen a flapper like this before. I usually get the standard flapper with the float. You can adjust how much water you flush with those by adjusting the float up (less water, flapper closes sooner) or down (more water, flapper closes later).

    Thank you that was very useful. On a side note, as I probably had it with the hole pointing to the lower position, not only it flushed a lot BUT also would stay stuck in the upright position as it was too light to get down. - So I have it positioned in the middle position now and it seems to be going better. :) - Thank You again.

    the float is adjustable as well...if left high on the chain it will close too early..low float uses more water,,float keeps flapper up until water level no a longer supports it

      you are correct that the chain and float also contribute to the flapper closing time. However this video explains the DIFFERENCE between two different designs under same CONDITIONS. The effect of the chain/float to two different designs is the same, thus is considered as the same condition.

    Your demonstration showed that the Min. setting leaves more water in the tank - " 3.5 inches of water remains" . The Max. drained out more water, leaving just - "2" inches water remains" in the tank. The Max is a bigger flush, right. More water down the drain. Why would you want your flapper on Max., if the Min uses / left more water in the tank? If you are trying to use less water to help the environment? So the ideal is a flapper set on Min and a coin to weigh it down to make a better seal, Correct? I wish you had summarized after the end of the first demo instead of going right into the coin demo. Thanks anyway.

    I bought the fluidmaster 500 because it's what was in stock. After watching your video I inspected my new flapper. It has only the hole on the bottom. No other hole up higher under the rim. Wonder if I burn a hole through the front if it will be equal to the 1.6gpf setting on this fancy schmancy rig, or if I should just flush it and buy a better flapper 🤣

      is your flapper "adjustable" one? regular flapper does not have that hole.

      @@GeniusAsian no I bought the one I said was in stock. My original flapper did have a hole on the side. Cut out a hole in the new flapper, same location as original, and it actually helped. Glad you solved the mystery.

    I'm confused 😕, I'm misunderstanding where the location of the adjustable hole should be located for minimum and maximum amount of water for a flush. When you explain about plugging the hole in the front and adding a hole on the side you say that it would allow maximum water for flush but in the video you made of it actually flushing it states that it's in the minimum position yet the hole looks to be off to the side instead of to the front where I thought minimum was located. So then which location is minimum and maximum? Isn't minimum where the hole is located in the front and maximum would be to one side?

      @@GeniusAsian At 2:32 it says "underwater view when dial is at minimum" but the hole is on the side. I thought when the hole was on the side it was at maximum not minimum. Minimum is when the hole is at the front isn't it, so that air escapes more quickly?
      Anyway, I just now plugged the hole in front with a silicone table top stem bumper and burned a new hole in the side with a soldering iron and now the flapper stays up longer and flushes much better.

After I made the video to experiment that flapper, I have changed all my toilet flushing to dual flush toilet (you may check out these videos), so I don't have any traditional flappers to experiment with, so I assume the theory is the following. The older toilet tanks are 4 to 7 gallons volume, the newer toilet tanks are 1.5 gallons. Suppose volume=Area*H (H is vertical height), therefore the older toilet tank has larger Area, if you want to flush less water, then you can reduce the H, see this one czcams.com/video/hTlKA67en6s/video.html where you need to put some object to reduce the Area so that you can have sufficient H to adjust the water. Back to your case, when we discuss to adjust the flapper, if H is too short, it will affect two different time periods. There are two different time periods: period1: the water flow out of the pocket of the flapper right after you just lifted the flapper. period2: the water will flow into the pocket of the flapper when it is in the refill state. If your toilet tank is the older type that H is too short, then the period1 may not have time to happen to empty the water, therefore it will fall back quickly on the base to plugin the hole to block flushing water. When you drill a hole on the side, the water can flow out quickly therefore you will have the first period to make the flapper having some air and make it "float" a little longer.

    Just to make sure I understood correctly, if I buy a non-adjustable flapper designed for pre-1994 toilets and use it in my 2000 1.6gpf toilet, it will close too soon?

      This is very tricky, so think about this way. The small hole for min is higher, i.e. 3.5 inch, when the water lowered and exposed the hole, the water from the bottom larger hole will go into the chamber, pulling down the flapper. If the small hole is submerged under water (not exposed), water can not go into the bottom larger hole, i.e. the chamber is full of air making the flapper float like a floaty.

      Exactly -- your explanations are correct; but your first under-water shot at 2:30 is for min and the small hole is supposed to be at the highest position, but the video actually shows it's at the lower position. That's why I stated your video was edited in the wrong order. Cheers.

      Immediately when the flapper is raised, before the small hole on top is exposed, the water from the bottom large hole will go into the chamber, forcing out the air from the small hole producing bubbles, because the pressure on the large hole on the bottom is larger than the pressure on the small hole on top. The higher the small hole on top, the more water will enter the chamber, and the quickly the flapper will fall, and less water will flow to the toilet, and vice versa.

    It's due to the hole on the side of the flapper right? Adjusting the fill rate of the flapper with water so it closes due to weight sooner or later. Right? I was puzzled and took it off and after a look it became the only obvious way.

      Your voice throughout is far lower volume than most vids. My phone vol goes high enough to hear you but some would not. Your photographer's voice is much louder, and clearer (fuller hz range) than yours.
