- Alright ladies and gentlemen, here is a video that should appeal to you crafty anglers. In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a rod/storage rack for your garage and keep your budget under $25.00 that is if you have all the necessary tools already. The tools and supplies that you need for this project include:
1x4 inch pine boards (42 inches)
Jig saw
Drill with two inch cup bit
Sand paper and hand sander preferably
Clear coat or stain for the finish
C-Clamp
Tape Measure
In the first part of the video, I show you how to lay out the boards to start marking the holes to be cut. Stacking the boards on top of one another will help insure good placement and minimize mistakes. Starting three inches from the edge, you will start your first hole using the two inch cup bit. After this hole is drilled you will continue to drill a hole every four inches. You should end with a total of 10 holes. Utilize your sand paper to smoothen the rough edges. For the second board you must cut grooves, so that the rods can easily be removed from the rack. I utilize a simple level and tape measure to mark one inch groves that will later be cut with the jig saw. After sanding and a little clear coat your rack is ready to be hung with simple “L” brackets that can be purchased in the hardware isle of Home Depot. If you enjoyed this video, please like, share and subscribe. Thank you!

"I'm not a carpenter, guys, I'm a fisherman." I love the honesty and down to earth-ness.
I am in the middle of making one of these as well and am excited to finally get the rods put up. Thank you for the project and the reassurance that fellow non-carpenters can make one as well.
Imagine a world where all the know it all’s and people who constantly critique people actually were productive and made their version to help instead of ACTING superior behind a computer. 👍
Joshua Taylor what was the music from or by who? I’d was cool bass riffs
Made one similar a couple of years back. Tip - keep the hole cut outs they make great wheels for wooden toys for the grandkids.
Thank you for the video. Made mine today. Was able to fit 17 rods spaced 4 inches apart on a 6 foot board. Looks awesome and happy with the results. Good father/son project for us.
i inherited several rods when my father past a few yrs ago. they were just stacked up on a shelf. Yesterday I built your holder based on your plans. turned out great and I can preserve his rods forever now. thank you for the tutorial and the plans.
I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I'm glad the tutorial helped. You're welcome!
He says, yet he is working on a router lift table! Still, a simple and effective solution. Thanks for taking the time to share.
I am so gonna use this idea when my new building next week.
Thanks buddy! Just wrapped up my rod holder today. Wife approved! Much appreciated.
Kool.... Love finding these old videos !!!!!!
Thanks for this video! It inspired me to build an 8’ version in my garage. I don’t understand all the a-hole comments, and I liked the way you responded. Appreciate it!
Your video clip is the BEST! Many thanks to your sharing.
Great idea, love it. Bought materials today. Going bang it together next week. Thanks for taking the time to put the video together.👍
Awesome and you're welcome!
I made mine 48 inches long. I allowed 3/4" on the starting end. I got 12 holes because I went every 3 inches from the outside of the circle. I used my adjustable T square and put that on the outer most edge of the circle and made a 45 degree angle line and then I drew the line on the opposite end. No need to measure an inch. Came out beautiful. Thanks for the video.
Exactly the same as mine mate all the way from Australia...👌👌
Great video. I never thought to mount it to the garage ceiling, but that's what I'm doing. Huge space saver with a simple design.
Just made mine today... They look great. Thanks for the idea....
Thanks for taking the time to film, edit and post this. Will be making the exact one this coming weekend. Cheers!
Nice work, definitely better than the store bought version. Way better Access to each pole and reel. Well done video. Thanks for posting!
Thanks, I agree 100%.
This was exactly what I was looking for, thanks so much for making this video. I mounted mine on the wall so I cut all of the jig saw cuts in the same direction which worked out all. I think if I were to do it over again I would make them larger, maybe 6 feet to hold more rods.
You're welcome, you can do quite a few things with this rack. Larger can be better, opportunity to buy more rods. ;)
Good job! Nice rainy day project.
I like the way it came out ! Very simple DIY project . Thanks !!
Yes indeed, super simple and if you are really craft with wood I'm sure it could be a lot better.
Super cool and I will be making one for my man cave. In the future, measure 1 3/4 from the edge for your center mark. A 1x4 is actually 3 1/2" not 4". Good vid.
Thanks for the feedback!
at 2" centers they are actually offset to 1 side and if hung the right way they allow more clearance down from the ceiling.
@@naed5692 yeah me too😂
Great video Josh...Simplicity is a magic thing...
This was exactly the simple one I been looking for, lol... I been so over thinking it and procrastinating on making one. I thank you much for the video....
Glad I could help!
Made it today, my husband really liked. Thanks so much for sharing.
That turned out pretty cool. Thanks for the idea Joshua. You have a new subscriber from North Carolina. Looking forward to checking out some of the fishing videos.

Thanks for this video, I made this rod holder today and it works great!!
Glad it worked well for you Greg, I just made another one for more rods lol.
Very cool. Ty for posting this. Great help
13:55 May want to plug it in guys. First tip. Love it. Great video.
wow! Very nice...I was thinkig about doing something like that for my rods, and this is a great idea! thanks for sharing this!!!
You're welcome, they are easy and fun to make. They really separate the rods nicely also. Hit that subscribe button for more to come. Thanks for watching.

Buddy Josh Crushed This Video Big Love From Michigan. Can’t Wait To Get Started!
Appreciate it!!
Great video!
I just made me a couple for my rods.
Your wife did great with the camera...
The music was perfect!!!!
One last thing. No job is worth a speeding ticket.....
Thanks Stanley, I had to record most of it but she is a big help. I agree about the ticket, brother in law learned the hard way.
Very nice work mate!
Just made mine to your exact specifications & only came out with 8 slots 👍. Must have been 52 inches to start 😁 but no biggie. Wife is happy that my rods are not all over the house. This should convince her to let me buy some Salty Scales swag from your website🙏. Awesome Video bud. Thanks for taking the time to put out a video on how to make these. Before i forget. Only cost me $15. That was for the wood, brackets & sand paper. 🎣😎🎣😎🎣😎🎣😎🎣
Beautifully done
Thank you! Cheers!
GOOD VIDEO BRO KEEP THEM COMING 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the idea💡👍
I make them out of poplar. I grew up on a lake and we had to make lots of equipment back in the day. this was one I was proud to learn.
It's an easy, fun project but they organize very well with this rack.
Awesome project
Looks great
Just some helpful advice for you. Your level is 1 inch wide, and lay out the hole centers on all holes before drilling any holes. Awesome rod rack. Will make one like it for inside my truck topper.
Thanks! I just made one,Awesome! w have no ice trucks in Nova Scotia, might make one of them too.lol Thanks.
Awesome Norman, no ice trucks? That must be rough?
Paul Jr Designs got me here. Great idea!
awesome idea. I hung this vertically between the studs in my garage. keeps them up and out of the way. No more broken tip.
is that a Keter table with a router insert. I need one of those.
Actually caught a 19 lb carp with this rod..Love it
made one similar a few years ago, I used one board that I ripped after I made the holes. I finished up the sharp edges with a router. I was still hoping you would show it flow it the dark, that is new and nice.
just made mine and thanks for great tips
Roy Schwartz You're welcome Roy
Awesome!!!
Nice video. Just build one today.
Im 52 yrs old and i made a fishing pole rack with a drawer for accessories back in h.s. shop class that i still use today
AWESOME 👍
Great project
Thank you!
Good job👍
Love it thanks Thumbs up
+Pamela Girlfish Thank you Pamela.
That's awesome thanks
You're welcome!
Great video I will be storing some of my rod's this way. Personally I'd mark all holes first. Put your drill in lower speed (1) drilling mode. You may find it easier to pre-drill the holes before you use a "hole saw". Finish edge with a router (if you own one) and for your slots I would just of turned the level on its edge to mark both lines. I probably sound criticizing, I don't mean it to be, just trying to help others, Take care Tight lines,
p.s. I'm a Carpenter "and" a Fisher. ;)
Thanks for the comment, trust me, you could make this thing look 500 times better than mine lol. They work great and I will store the suggestions for my next project.
nice job putting in some quality time here..!!
+topnotch fishing Thanks bud, it was fun and turned out just right.
Wow nice..👍👍
Nice!
Great video.
Thank you Margaret
Awesome video! You did make me laugh, with the jigsaw tip! 😂
Glad to bring a smile, thanks for the comment.
I now have made 3 sets of these. Much better than the saggy Berkeley strap system I have used for 20 years.
These look much neater hanging in my basement and are easier to load rods in and out. I have room for 11 rods in each unit, a bit more that what I need but always room to grow a bit.
Great to hear, glad you like them Ken. Always need room for more. ;)
came out nice good video
Thanks Bruce, a little long but it's hard to condense these types of videos.
Cool jams
Very nice
I like this!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
You .did a pretty good job on that fishing rod holder .very easy to make If I could make a suggestion. next time the snow cone truck comes They sell these little bottles of liquor. Put one of those in there upside down. I noticed your buddy was drinking. Lol I'm from Austin Texas we put bottles of Corona beer inside Margaritas upside down. Lol😀😀😀😀
Wait a minute here! In Texas the snow cone truck sells little bottles of liquor???
Braddah! Great tutorial! Looks very clean! I got back into surf fishing here in Cali and I needed one of these! Looking forward to trying AND you got some Kona Ice too?!? Solid!
Awesome! Thank you!
great diy idea for any handyman. also use bicycle hooks on scrap 2x4.
Thanks Anthony for watching and sharing.
I saw something you could do on your holes to keep them from having so many splinters. When you drill your holes, once the drill bit goes through the wood turn it over and drill the other side to the center. This will keep the outside of the board from splintering. What store did you get that can of paint from?
Awesome! Subscribed dear sir!
That's Great BUDDY,,
Thank you sir, glad you liked it.
Just completed this project. I used your video tips but used deck board instead. That extra 1.5 inches made a difference ( insert that's what she said joke here).
Hey im new here now started watching your videos and i just taught that it was cool to hear music from the Caribbean played by the national instrument of my country of Trinidad and Tobago played by a snow cone van in another country
+Yaseen Mohammed Hello Yaseen,
They play that music all the time, thanks for watching and commenting.
Joshua Taylor forgot to add great video over all will be using these tips in the future thanks
+Yaseen Mohammed Thank you sir, I appreciate that.
Working hard, great job!
This is an awesome DIY! Been thinking about tossing up a rod rack, might go ahead and get on it now!
Thank you! Let us know how it goes. :)
Will do! Ill make a video out of it some time!
Sounds good, looking forward to it.
thank you so much
great video......I followed your instructions to a tee. The only thing I added was a third rail....the rods I have are about 7 feet, so when i set up the rack my rods would bow, the third rack solved the problem.
I'm glad it worked for you Leo If you place the two pieces closer together it will prevent the bend, some of my rods are 8 feet in length.
My favorite carpenter was also a fisher of men...
Jesus
@@johnrawlings5659 he’s also my landscaper
Good job.
Thank you
nothing is 100% perfect, that's the fun part of diy projects. they have a personal touch to them
nice work! and awesome fun video
recommend using pencil for markings, ask inks will 'soak' into the timber and usually require more sanding effort
Joshua, Great work and very informative! One thing I would like to add is when measuring to install the brackets on the wall/ceiling use your shortest rod/reel set for a guide. Someone (me) may have rushed to install this setup and spread the brackets to far apart and the shorter rods would not fit! haha
Good point Dale, thanks for sharing. That is funny!
Hey, I made a set and am very happy with them. I used 3/4 plywood because it's what I had. Only problem is I should have made 2 pair. Got lots of rods.
Ken, that is my same thought. I need three more sets lol.
sweet video !!!!! I made one similar to that and it works really well !!!
+Flat state Fishing Fantastic, much better than the store bought racks wouldn't you say?
Yes!!! I'm making one soon and that is my Kona Ice guy...he comes to out to the school I teach at
god job my friend
Sweet ima make one my blazer.
Btw a 1x4 is only actually 3.75 inches wide and that’s why all the holes are off center
Cool
Subscribed! nice Vid
+luis silvestre Thanks and welcome
never measure hole to hole, it will definitely grow on you. On another note the center of a 1x4 (which is 3 1/2") is not 2", it is 1 3/4".
I would of marked 2 in on both ends and snapped a chalk line and then ran the tape the length of the boards and marked every 4 in. 4, 8, 12, etc. Little easier than sticking the tape in the center of the hole haha. Good shit though nonetheless. Will be doing this tomorrow.
Cheers brother and tight lines!
Great idea, makes it so much easier
Great video Simple and efficient !
Throw that $80 garbage out! And am a fisherman as well - wish I found your video like 5 yrs ago
Thanks for watching!
Thank yu .
Next time clamp both pieces together, and cut the corners on both at the same time. Looks great good video
