- 10 years ago the console gaming market was flooded with multiple NHL title. Today there is only one...NHL 20. DZ goes over what many fans consider to be the 'golden age' of hockey video games and how we got to the point where 2K, Sony and Midway all fled the market.
What's one feature you would add to the NHL series if you could?
TSN add in goal horns and goals songs correctly

They need GM Connected back, Be a Pro with a story or more involved in general, and probably World of Chem as part of Be a Pro
Sawyer Michaelson Be a Pro was best in 14. Really liked the like/dislike system of the fans, coach, management, and team along with the post game interviews and random events. Bought 15 thinking it was going to expand in it and the guy at GameStop laughed when I had the game back to return in less than an hour. Still pull 14 out and play from time to time. Wouldn’t mind something more immersive though.
Better GM mode. I have no reason to play NHL until their’s is as good or almost as good as NBA 2K’s.

Yup they always show third or 4th liners with the cup so the only way you do it is if you're a captain. My be a pro wasn't even in the player photo at the end either.

One of the few TSN videos I clicked after seeing notification. Owned NHL 07 and NHL 2K8 Then Back to NHL 09, 2k was good but didn't have the graphics of EA. Good content, video liked.

They only will add to HUT, every other mode doesn't make money so they don't want to make it any good

@@fawgy3702 i mean, can real life coaches exploit making a new play for a breakout or whatever? It's a strategic element to the game. No play is undefendable, so you just gotta make a counter play for the defensive side.
The EA game is just lazy. That’s basically the bottom line. Playing NHL 20, there were so many missed opportunities to just make the game more fun. This doesnt even have to come from the gameplay itself but just stuff that you can include in the game presentation wise for example, pregame warmups, player interviews, live score updates across the league in franchise mode during a game. It’s just lazy. The current franchise mode for NHL 20 has a tshirt promo and on the tshirt it has a team logo and 2017-2018 on it.... L A Z Y

The gameplay is pretty much the only thing the game has going for it, and that hasn't really changed in years. Also, even then there are points in the gameplay i think could be executed much better
Reagan Harder 100%, it’s pretty hard to make a hockey game in terms of mixing realism with fun. So I dont fault them for that, but there are so many elements of the sport that are missing from it
The AI sucks, defenseman don’t play correctly in front of their own net. On a 2 on 1, the guy without the puck skates past the goal line. And, goalies make stupid unrealistic saves.
Happens to me all the time, I score those goals as well

Agree my defense on all star on nhl 17 literally just move out of the way and guys will go for a line change as your passing to them giving you an icing it’s horrible. It’s like if in madden the cpu threw a pass and before you could take control your corner would run the opposite direction
Also, trying to actually play as the goalie is a lame experience. You either move so slow that one-timers are a death sentence, or so fast that you leave the crease with a single flick of the stick. Nevermind the fact that most of the actual save mechanics are done completely for you, and you share almost none of the same controls as a skater. Like, ok, when i'm a winger I press RB to poke check. What does RB do as a goalie? NOTHING! Why would you change that?! And there's input lag so when I call for a pass right when someone already decided to pass to me, I now just throw the puck away as soon as I get it.

@@TayR0C nah man ultimate team was first in madden in 2011 and that was the first year of it existing in any ea game. They slowly fleshed it out and made it more and more anti consumer as the years went on so the core fanbase wouldn't notice it happening and it worked really well because the madden fanbase is legit blind to the garbage their playing right now

Yeah the soundtrack. Preferably get tracks from bands that people HAVE HEARD OF. Or use in-house compositions - sometimes they're better than the licenced stuff. IMO, the NHL 2001 track Dwight The Goalie Pilot is the best track on any NHL soundtrack, a masterpiece of drum'n'bass if there ever was one.

my one thing would be CPU's that know position in hockey. Ex: dont skate away from a possible 2 on 1, or stand outside the blue line as the defenseman on a power play.

@Preston Ruttan there's half the aspects that are realistic and the other half are horrendously unrealistic. People would love true realism but when you have things like backskating and having full puck control, dangles for days, etc. and super poor ai it ruins the experience of some of the great realism touches they do have.
@Preston Ruttan I played NHL 11 to death and had a blast, then I was busy in life for a while but decided to buy NHL 18. Yea, game is incredibly boring to play, sure the presentation and graphics are nice, but the gameplay is just not fun in any way. The AI is in some way heavily improved in that their passing in the offensive zone is much better, but they are also incredibly frustrating to play against due to OBVIOUS cheating from their part. The worst part is how awful your own player's AI is. Whenever I play NHL 18 I feel like I could be doing something else more fun with my time, and i'm right, game isn't fun. I don't touch online btw.
@Preston Ruttan In fact, this isn't true to just the NHL games. I don't play many games these days, but from the few new games I have tried it feels like it is a current trend in gaming, realism over fun gameplay. I don't care how good the game looks, I don't care how realistic the animations are, I don't care how much content the game has, if it isn't fun there is no point. Everything else is secondary, and I feel like the prioritizations these days are awful, gaming used to be much more fun honestly. Sure you can't measure fun, it is subjective, but I could argue for days on why games aren't as fun as they used to be, in general obviously, there are exceptions.
Yeah you're right. NHL 18 was just a lot less fun for me, even with all of the tweaking to the sliders. It was a chore.
Ofc they're still fun who doesn't like:
Ai teammates trying to score on their team
Ai dmen throwing behind the net when there's an open pass
Be a pro being the same thing every year
Ai dumping the puck on the pk late in the game when they're losing
Too many trolls in online play
The most of the skill tree is useless
But hey if weren't all masochist why would we buy and play the game every year

They won't make non HUT modes better cause they don't make money, they only want you to play HUT and buy packs
You have to change the strategy for the AI to not dump the puck during a PK. If it's on Standard, Conservative or Defend, they'll always dump it no matter the situation. If it's on Aggressive or Full Attack, they'll hang on to it and bring it up ice
@@Lekcots11 glad yours works for you, i press the button to be aggressive and after about 5 seconds, it gets automatically switched back to conservative

I used to buy every year, now I wait every couple years. I used to look up the release date and get so excited at the end of August when it was getting close. I jumped from 18 to 20 this year, and probably won't get another until the PS5 generation. Its depressing how far the quality has dropped...

Great vid. I loved the games back in the 90s and early 20s. Now the game doesn't change much and there are too many hardcores online so now I just enjoy playing offline Season mode

I liked 95 a bit better, they added trading. I think 96 had crested a player so you could play with Gretzky and Lemieux. After that it was a bit of a drop.

NHL needs a personalized Be A Pro mode with some effort out into it. It’s unacceptable to enter free agency as the Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe winner as a playmaking center and only draw two 2-year contracts from 2 teams as your agent tells you the market is dried up.

In order to make the series fun again, it requires only a few minor upgrades: AllStar weekend (skills + games), scrap the HUT, EASHL or whatever useless modes the game is full of now, focus on OFFLINE modes such as BAGM, BAP.
EA, there you go, you can have that advice for free.

Make "Be a Pro" start at childhood learning to skate (tutorial mode), key milestones like high school and college championships and tryouts, playing street for a bit, all working your way towards the pros. Then it's all about the cup

NHL 04 and NHL 06 are still my favorites. EA needs competition. Also Be a Pro desperately needs to be updated. Make it more like 2K's.

The 90s NHL games were amazing. More arcade style and focused! Even people who didn't like hockey would play those games. I also agree with a previous comment about NHL games needing to make a return to PC, as well.
EASHL list of needs:
-Bring back hits after the whistle
-More accurate poke checks
-Choosing what type of Player your CPU goalie or player is

Seeing NHL on the switch would be cool IMO. It would be nice if they could add more to Be A Pro mode and Franchise Mode. I personally don't care about setting the price of a hot dog or a bottle of water, that just seems pretty useless. And last but not least, I know everyone says it but GM Connected. That was one of the most fun modes they ever had. I got people into hockey because of that game mode and now watch the NHL to this day because of it. Doesn't mean HUT would have to die off, just gives the fans a mode everyone wants, and could draw in new fans as well to the NHL video game series/NHL. Just my opinions. BTW, perfectly put together video Z, keep it up!
The career mode needs to be upgraded, its literally been the same since NHL 11. It needs to be like NBA 2k where there’s a deep story mode, a my park and you can upgrade your player through offline and play as them in online too. They also need to add Gm connected and add the frostbite engine
When talking about NHL I feel like almost everyone forgets how fun the gameplay is. That is the most single important thing in any game, specially sportsgame. I played FIFA from FIFA 10 to FIFA 18 and invested my soul in the series. I´m a massive football (soccer) fan so the choice was simple for me. But in the end it was boring gameplay the killed the hype of FIFA for me. Ultimate team was and is a great game mode, but in the end it didn´t matter because the games was too dull. I have a lot of friends who still play FIFA but almost any actual game, just grinds the market or open packs. But last I rediscovered NHL, and i fell instant in love, because the gameplay is so intense and fun. NHL also made me a big fan of Hockey again. Yes, the gamemodes can improve but the main focus should always be gameplay.

Yes. Totally under appreciated game. It's the reason I still play on a Wii. It is probably my most played game of all of my 30 years gaming. It is just that great.
I'm disappointed about many things with today's NHL games, but one thing I'm quite pissed off about is EA's obvious lack of care for the European leagues. The older games didn't have too much either, but for such a long lasting franchise we should expect better for the modern games. I can really only speak from a Swedish standpoint, but from what I've seen the other leagues basically have the same issues. As for Sweden, yeah they added the Swedish second league not to long ago, but nothing else has improved or been added:
*We've had the same kits since '16 (if not longer) +there are no classic kits to choose from
*Some players don't have the correct numbers
*Some players who've left in real life are still at their clubs
*Sometimes the captain hierarchy isn't right
*There are no longer retired numbers
*There are no real life arenas. We had the Ericsson Globe a few years back (which wasn't authentic in itself but it was something at least), however it was taken out and replaced with the generic EA Sports Arena...
*The players don't even remotely resemble their real life counterparts, some players with beard don't have it in the game etc.
*The ratings are all messed up and wrong most of the time
*Some player types are wrong, an offensive minded defender was classed as defensive by the game for instance
There are probably a lot of other things as well, but it doesn't really matter since EA are too lazy to do anything about it. Still, nobody seems to care anyway...

I've always hoped one day an NHL game would be made where in the Be A Pro mode (or its equivalent) you also control your player off ice. Where you have to attend practices, manage fitness in the offseason, but also enjoy your money by buying cars, properties and such and actually be able to use them in the city you are playing in (unless you are on the road obviously). I want a full on NHL player experience as much detail as possible, I realize it would be a huge undertaking and probably quite niche but it would be a really interesting game mode, would probably require next gen consoles to operate.

As someone who hasn't played a NHL game since '06 as a kid. If they added a story mode that told the backstory of current player(s) working their way into the NHL, I'd honestly buy it. It'd fit the casual gamer much better to have a historically motivated story mode.

I think the difficulties need to be tweaked. Playing on pro difficulty is like giving the controller to a baby. But bump it up one notch to all-star and then the opposing goalie is replaced with a brick wall
I literally can't believe gm connected isn't in the game
What I would do is have a quick time event mode or kind of story mode. It recaps legendary moments in hockey history and puts them into a game. Examples: Leafs vs Bruins Game 7 2013, Blackhawks vs Flyers Game 6 2010 and many other amazing moments. It would tell the story throughout the “Episode” and when you needed to step in to make history it would give you a quick time event. If you fail you lose that part of the “Episode” and have to restart. Get it right, you complete that task. I would enjoy it personally but I would understand why some people wouldn’t.
Remember games like Nhl hitz... now I need to choose what I'm going to charge for admission before I'm even allowed to play a game.

-AUTHENTIC ON ICE INTRODUCTIONS FOR BE A PRO.
-PUT THAT MOUTHGUARD IN ALL THE WAY.
-STORY MODE.
-FIRST NAMES INCLUDED IN PLAY BY PLAY.
-BETTER JERSEYS INSTEAD OF MULTIPLE SLIGHT VARIATIONS.
-YOU GET TO HOLD THE CUP YOU WON FOR YOUR TEAM.
-FEMALE PRONOUNS FOR FEMALE PROS/ ALL NEW DIALOGUE FOR FEMALE CHARACTERS.
NHL 13 was the peak of the Chel games, and there's nothing you can do to change my mind. GM Connected was the best game mode they ever added and then just they scrapped it for no reason.

EA doesn't care about how good or bad their game is. As long as it keeps making them money, which it does cuz people keep buying the same recycled garbage each year, whether it's Chel, FIFA or Madden
Story mode for Be A Pro for sure - it’s something that’s actually watchable for someone else to play on CZcams which was a big push for NBA 2K.
Also, the game needs to be more in depth offline which creates more interest in online modes.

I miss NHL 94 through 98. I loved NHL 2002 for the GBA because it followed the same style as those games.
Its been the same game since like 09... no market competition... no ground breaking or new modes, no good story line in career. The same gm/franchise mode for the last 3 years.... changes menu layout/color every year and calls it a day. Same (NON world of chel) equipment/customize options... remember when you could run the goalie depending on speed? that was fun! Take a page out of NHL hits and bring come CRAZY arenas and scenarios?
1. Winter classic 2. 11 vs 11 brandy mode (nhl meets FIFA) 3. Street mode with 3-6 players per team with option of in-line or quad skates and option of street puck or ball.

The last good game was NHL 2004. You could customize your GM's office (I had a bear statue in mine), and his wardrobe. It also had the best fighting and the widest variety of goalie saves, and lastly a soundtrack that puts any current sports game to shame. NHL 06 and 07 get honourable mentions for actually presenting your players with all of the different trophies
I want a remaster or sequel for Rock the Rink. That was a wacky and insane game that deserved (and still deserves) a new entry in any form.
Haven't bought an NHL game new since NHL 15 and routinely log time into NHL Hitz 2003's franchise mode still to this day
The Slapshot motion controls. It made it so I can't go back to traditional ea hockey games.
Actually having to wind up and shoot, cross check to hit, and so on, made it something I still play almost daily. I can't get out to a rink, and growing up, there was only one other hockey fan I knew. This was/is a decent substitute. I would love to see a better version of this return.
I remember in 2K9 you could control the cup celebration after you won. If you took to long the announcers would even comment on it.
I have a friend who used to bring his game over and play down through the years. The games were pretty intuitive and as soon as I got used to the controls after not playing for a while we'd have great games. I'd kick his ass at least half the time, There came a point where this stopped happening. He would get the new game, practice all the special moves, learn how to take advantage of the unrealistic elements, and THEN come over and proceed to slaughter me. I'd be trying to play like it was real hockey: didn't stand a chance. So I get the game myself and practice. I could beat him regularly again, but the game just wasn't fun anymore. I haven't played since.
Apparently there’s good reasoning as to why NHL hasn’t adopted the Frostbite engine and it involves not wanting to make the same mistake they did with NHL 15. FIFA and Madden saw major hurdles in development and using the engine, so instead of taking resources to make the game for that engine, they’re focusing on working on the next gen game along with the current gen so they won’t have the striking lack of game modes 15 had
They aren't but it's not just NHL games, it's games in general. There's lots more games out there now and it's much easier to buy games than ever before. Thus, there's less excitement than going to a local shop or a rental store, finding the game you want, driving home and reading the manual while waiting to play, and finally getting to play the game.
I'm waiting until the Seattle NHL team comes in before I buy it.
Eashl has been a major turnoff. It's the best part of the gaming series for years, but when they introduced divisions you couldn't find clubs to really match up with once you got high enough. There's also been no reason to play it unless you're one of the original better players. There's no motivation to win. There's no tournament for the best team in the world, there's no prize pools unless you play hut, which is dominated by kids who steal their mom's credit cards and then glitch goal with the best players after spending several hundred dollars on microtransactions for pucks to buy packs or cards.
If I ever buy this again I want eashl to be competitive and have the ability to make money of it from tournament play.

If NHL 21 comes with a story mode where you go from neighborhood league to amature to pro to Hall of Fame, (including the choice of being a goalie, or playing through a story involving a current goalie (like Marc Andre Fleury (think WWE 2ks showcase mode)) I'd buy that game in a heartbeat.
I wouldn't know. I haven't been able to play an NHL game on PC for over 10 years now. :(
