    My father had this recording in his collection. One night wheen i was 8, i woke from my sleep to the sounds of this opera. i sneaked out of bed and sat on the stairs listening. He came out to go to the kitchen and saw me sitting there with tears streaming down my face. He lifted me up and brought me into our "good room" to listenn in comfort. Since that night I can't see past Bjoerling when it comes to tenors. When i hear him sing La Boheme i am immediately transported back to those stairs as an eight year old. Now I'm 65.

    Fantastic. And not only for the quality of the voices. But thanks God also for the fact that they took the right way to end this duet, which means that Bjorling did not try to sing as loud as he cold the end note on the same hight as the soprano, but just like the composer did write it. It's a matter of musical intelligence, and both singers had lots of that. To our pleasure.

    And to think this legendary recording was made at least partly by chance!
    All the artists, including the conductor, Beecham were in N.Y. for different engagements
    right down to the lesser roles of Schaunard, Alcindoro, the sentry in act 3 etc.
    Bjorling's final complete recording, Madama Butterfly was made in Rome about 5 years later
    and is equally beautiful. De Los Angeles stated that Bjorlings recordings never quite did him justice.
    His sound was far more beautiful if it was heard in actual performance.

    Amazing voice, amazing performance. This is a rare (original) version of the tenor hitting the middle C on the last "amor," instead of the high C that most tenors hit. It usually ends up a screaming match between the tenor and the soprano... especially ludicrous when you imagine the two descending a dark, and tiny stair well! Bravo to Bjoerling for interpreting the score the same way Puccini wrote it.

      @benoitpellet1657 Před 5 lety +22

      Sue Sandlin-Plaehn You said it! That’s one of the things that makes this recording so wonderful - the duet ends OFF STAGE as the lovers are descending the staircase and their voices fade into the mist, as it were, rather than sounding like two bidders at an auction trying to drown each other out. I credit Sir Thomas Beecham for that touch.

    • @mckavitt13
      @mckavitt13 Před 4 lety +17

      An exception to that general rule is the "amor" duo sung (in German) by Fritz Wunderlich & Anneliese Rothenberger... they take it p or even pp!! Gorgeous, right on pitch & solemnly moving. PS. But this is my favourite recording of Boheme, which I first bought on 2 Seraphim LPs for the incongruous sum of $2. It made me fall in love w both artists. Björling never sounded better, tho' I have him in numerous operas, all great, including his Butterfly, also w Victoria. Anyway, he was probably long dead by then, but I became a blithering fan of v much alive de los Angeles & was present at just about every recital given by her in NYC for about 10 years. I have such sublime memories of these & quite a few anecdotes as well. It was a charmed era for me.

      Beecham has been accused of much lingering and maudlin expressiveness in this recording. It's true! And the surprising result is one of the greatest recordings of all time. He did have the (dream) cast, all with rock solid vocal technique to linger over phrases and be self-indulgent, yet still not sound taxed. A divine guilty pleasure.

    • @benoitpellet1657
      @benoitpellet1657 Před 4 lety +11

      @@hrh4961 Absolutely and fully in agreement. And if by "maudlin", those critics meant that this recording creates goosebumps and even moves listeners to tears, then I say three cheers for being maudlin.
      So many people in other recordings sing this particular set of arias and closing duet with great vocal artistry but with a brashness that in my view is totally unsuited to the context. Even though we have glimmerings that Rodolfo is "on the make" here (blowing out his own candle, hiding the key, trying to convince Mimi to stay inside with him rather than going to the Cafe Momus), at the end of the day, this is a scene about a poet being raised to the heights of ecstasy by love at first sight, and a shy woman being coaxed out of her shell by the same sentiment, and the two lovers basking in their new-found love.
      The delicate touch that Beecham gives to the orchestra is echoed by the beautiful warm tones of both Bjorling and de los Angeles, resulting in a genuine feeling of the flowering of first love, and ultimately foreshadowing its bittersweet outcome at the end of the opera, rather than, as in so many other recordings, an excuse to "showcase" the talents of the singers, resulting in a dual of fishwives hawking their wares.

      Victoria de los Angeles - one of the true greats of opera - made many widely acclaimed recordings, including those of La vida breve, La bohème, Pagliacci, and Madama Butterfly. The last three paired her with the outstanding tenor Jussi Björling. She was particularly appreciative of Björling's unique talent. In de los Ángeles' biography by Peter Roberts, de los Ángeles noted that "in despite of technical developments, none of the Jussi Björling recordings give you the true sound of his voice. It was a far, far more beautiful voice than you can hear on the recordings he left".

    Lovely! Much more pleasing to the ear that Björling sang the last note as Puccini wrote it. Most tenors don't have the security to resist having a screaming match with Mimi. Björling showed that he was not only secure in his singing but that he also had class. Victoria de Los Angeles was equally enchanting. Bravi!!!

      As far as the ending of the duet I don't think it's about security or lack thereof. Sometimes a tenor likes to sing the end the way Puccini wrote it and sometimes he likes to be loud and proud with his tessituras. You will hear another selection on CZcams where he sings the duet with Tebaldi and goes the other way. They change the key but Bjoerling is the only tenor I know sings the end both ways.

      @@frankmaiorana66
      Let's start with.....when he sings with Tebaldi, they key is changed because she had nothing reliable above a Bb ..... perhaps Bohème wasn't for her
      Secondly- "Sometimes he likes to sing it the way Puccini wrote it"
      What???
      Do you understand that this is not bel Canto - Verismo (as all of Puccini's operas are) is meant to be sung As Written.
      This isn't Traviata- oh, maybe I'll add a high Eb here.
      I love Jussi - but, if you were correct, which I doubt, then that's musically INCORRECT.
      MUCH more likely- due to Tebaldi's less than reliable top, he was asked to cover her
      "Loud and Proud"? Seriously? This isn't a Pride Parade

    • @Vogeln
      @Vogeln Před 2 lety +1

      In order to compare the de Los Angeles and Tebaldi versions, I'm posting them here. The former is only an audio while the latter is a video. The inaccurate picture of Teresa Berganza always bugged me so this video has the correct image:
      czcams.com/video/PRHuqqEk3Bk/video.html
      The video of the duet with Björling and Tebaldi begins at 57:14. czcams.com/video/ouRAEr-WooM/video.html
      I couldn't find one with featured only the duet. Björling sounds a little less "beautiful" than in the previous version. Perhaps it's because of the different key or maybe he was sober in his performance with de Los Angeles ;-). Tebaldi's phrasing, intonation, and legato are unmatched! The video also reveals her to be be a great actress. Her mannerisms are every bit as demure and tentative as everyone imagines the character of Mimi to be. The beauty of her tone just melts my heart. My only critique would be: her voice, although unparalleled in its beauty, is just a bit too powerful for the role of Mimi. In my humble opinion, de Los Angeles pulls off the role of a women sick, and dying, of tuberculosis a little more convincingly. Nevertheless, her voice has a shimmering and brilliant quality which is a little more suitable for the role. God, I love Renata Tebaldi though!!!
      Added the video link!

      I am not "running for office", so I fell free to express my enthusiasm without much circumspection or restrain.
      I Attended few very good performances, but none with any of "The Great Ones", in fact, my first live performance was in
      Torino, Italia; it was Il Barbiero di Siviglia, by Rossini. Magnificent!
      I used to listen (sometimes I still do) to operas in vynyl (and CD's) with Jussi, Gedda, Corelli, Callas, de los Angeles, Bidú Sayão, Dietrich Dieskau-Fisher, Beverly Sills, Totti dal Monte,.......As a matter of fact, I have a very good and well chosen collection of operas (and now a broken stereo system).
      I, once upon a time, was fluent in Italian and French (tested "in loco" many years ago) that allowed me to follow with ease the singing (few times with the score in hand). My wife and I also enjoyed the constant company of a tenor, a close friend of ours (has passed away) and we enjoyed listening together great performances and have some very long conversations about operas; I also enjoyed the company of audiophiles, opera lovers like myself.
      But again, and my honest apologies for ramblings, I developed a great admiration for Jussi Bjorling and I do not apologize for it.
      Best wishes.

He was an excellent singer, a great lyric tenor, with a beautiful voice. It's the proclamations that don't sit well with me, like statements " no better tenor", "the greatest tenor the world has ever seen"etc. In My Opinion, Bjorling, Di Stefano, Gigli, Pavarortti, Corelli, Tucker & Del Monaco were all great tenors, but not in everything. Exam: Imo, Bjorling,Di Stefano, & Gigli could not do a heroic Turandot like Corelli, Del Monaco or Tucker, and Corelli, MDM and RT could not do a refined Boheme like Bjorling , Gigli, GDS OR Pav. BTW, where is Bjorling's Forza, Chenier, and where is Del Monaco's &Corelli's Elisir D' More?

Pura belleza.
