My dad died about 6 weeks ago. He was at home so that we could care for him there. This was his favourite piece of music. He went into a coma the day before he died, Mum and I played it to him in his coma. He opened his eyes and looked around and then went back to sleep. Glad he got to hear his favourite music as he went onto his new journey.
Hello :) Your Dad and mine clearly both loved this beautiful piece of music, which always has the power to reduce me to tears. My dear Dad died in England, early in the morning on 04Mar22. I will be ever grateful that on Sunday 27Feb22 I, via Skype, was able to play another favourite of his (Fuer Elise) which actually awoke him briefly from the deep, dementia-induced sleep he was in. It was wonderful that he recognised another favourite piece of music.
Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad died way back in 2004 and he loved this song and it was played at his funeral. Every time I hear the song it brings so much emotion and reminds me of him. I certainly have grown to appreciate these amazing songs and tenors as I've grown older. My dad's favourite tenors were Jussi Byorling and Placido Domingo but I still remember him saying that Pavarotti was possibly the best of them all.
For me (i am a French musician -vocal coach) the most beautiful duet of our repertory !!!!! and very peaceful music, a beautiful-spiritual way to help your father into his new "voyage"......this one is not the best version !The one with Alagna and Terfel is much better , Met performance, Levine conducting.......I am sending you my best "musical" thoughts, even i don't know you ! :-)......

This is indeed a gorgeous version. Another is the live concert performance with Jonas Kaufmann and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (RIP); they both put so much feeling into it. My mother truly loved this duet, and always think of her when I hear it. I was so lucky to be able to see the Met Opera's exquisite production of The Pearl Fishers/Les Pecheurs des Perles with her, just a couple of years before her passing.
I'm really surprised at Ghiaurov. I didn't know he could sing so lightly and lyrically. Pavarotti is stunning. I can't think of more beautiful singing from him that I have heard

This has to be the most amazing rendition of this duet. It is certainly amongst Pavarotti's finest recordings. That he sings throughout with mezza-voce is not only an astonishing feat of singing, it creates one of the most wonderful tenor voices imaginable.
