    One of the upcoming challenges in my Constitution build will be the brass "tent frames" that go over the companionways on the spar deck. You've given me some great ideas, but now I can see why you like 1:48 scale; doing brass work like that at 1:76 scale will be a challenge, but at least you've given me some inspiration and some new (to me) tricks. Thanks! Now the other challenge will be smuggling that Proxxon mill into the garage.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  Před měsícem

      I usually do that. But this is not an option, not all gun ports are empty, and besides, the deck is full of stuff - where it is impossible to insert a jig. So here it will be like this...

      Yes, these are the other ends of the eyebolts. This is how they were installed on ships.

      @@OlhaBatchvarov were they used for both the breech rope eyes and the gun tackle eyes as well?

  • @jameskrauzlis2634
    @jameskrauzlis2634 Před měsícem

    How common was the use of eyebolt tails? I don't recall seeing them on the plans for the USS CONSTITUTION but are they represented on page 85, item10 in the Anatomy of the Ship book by Karl Heinz Marquart? I am wondering your thoughts if that was used in the build of the USS CONSTITUTION in 1797. The use of this feature makes perfect sense considering the stresses the breeching rope would have been subjected to in actual use. ❤

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  Před měsícem +2

      This is so obvious that not all anatomies have drawings with a diagram of how the eyebolts for the gun tackles are installed. Not many modelers build museum scale models (1:48 or larger) to show such detail. But according to the rules of NAVIGA for this scale, to miss such important details is unsportsmanlike!In other words, you lose points in the competition. By the way, Boudriot in his drawings always marks the section with the location of the eyebolts.
      I have issue #012 in the Library Playlist - The French cutter Le Cerf (1779-1780) - monograph ANCRE by J. Boudriot
      At 4:00 minutes Sheet III has a midship section with a guns and eyebolts. And on the next Sheet IV, their tails are shown on a sheer plan.

      @@OlhaBatchvarovIf you check the Anatomy of Ship for the USF Constitution the diagrams for the breech rope and gun tackles do not show the bolt tails...also, checking the drawings from the construction work of 1927 omits them as well. I am surmising those plans omit yhe bolt tails as the practice shown in the USS Essex, from the ssme period, would also apply showing the standard practice followed when CONSTITUTION was built in 1797. This is just one of the details omitted in the CONSTITUTION anatomy book which erroneously relies heavily on the 1927 reconstruction work, such as the stern configuration and the split gun port covers. This deficiency has troubled me in trying to determine the "as built" configuration of USF CONSTITUTION for my modeling project. Am I wrong in this assessment? This is one aspect of modeling research that intrigues me...such as CONSTITUTION having a topsail spiritual when originally rigged, as well as a single dolphin striker...thr original logbooks talk about the spritsail topsail causing problems when underway suggesting it was removed early on. By the w gu y, the USS Essex early plans and paintings also show a topsail spritsail, suggesting that was the normal rigging for American frigates when CONSTITUTION was launched in 1797, but that is my deduction based upon the logbook entries and contempory primary sources.

      @@OlhaBatchvarov you are, of course, correct, Olya...I missed that diagram for some reason...my error!!❤ Would the eyebolt for the gun tackles also have the eye ring as well? The restoration plan 22130 appear to show both, by the way.😀
