I've been a big fan of Benny Hill since 1979 when local television stations in Seattle began rerunning episodes of the show at 11:30 PM. every week night.
I admit that it was Hill's angels that originally caught my attention.
But that quickly changed when I realized how amusing, hilarious, and talented Benny was.
He captivates you with skits that keep your constant attention with the characters, one-liners, the context, the irony, and the simple act of a facial expression.

Benny Hill was hilarious and one of the greatest comics to come from the United Kingdom. His BBC shows, before Thames, reveal a lot of his creative innovation and camera tricks. I have numerous sketches of him on DVD. When he does his impressions of American celebrities it's always pitch perfect, for the most part, and spot-on...which is unique for a British comedian. I've heard other British comedians attempt to vocally mimic American celebrities and you can tell it's a put on. Benny sounded authentic as W.C. Fields, Raymond Burr, Mae West, Telly Savalas, Marlon Brando, and others.

This is a rare gem - thanks for the upload! If only Benny had found a really gifted producer in the last period of his career. But unfortunately he hooked up with the clueless, egotistical Dennis Kirkland (seen here with Sue Upton), who steered him down a disastrous 'tits & ass' route that prematurely ended his TV career - and arguably, his life.
Benny was unceremoniously fired by Thames boss John Howard Davies in May 1989 - a TV executive without a fraction of Benny's creativity, intellect or humanity. Howard Davies had summoned Britain's top comedian to his office, then told him bluntly they were cancelling his hit show, after 20 years of high UK ratings, and multi millions earned in US sales.
In shock after returning from a triumphant appearance at the Montreaux TV Festival, Benny asked the Thames boss if he couldn't have at least taken him to lunch at a restaurant, to break the bad news. That nicety had clearly never occurred to the TV executive!
Thames fired the gun, but Benny's producer Kirkland had provided the bullets. Aping another successful Thames TV production, 'The Kenny Everett Show', 'The Benny Hill Show' had upped the sexy content to an uncomfortable degree. But Benny was a very different performer, and it was a very different show. Perhaps to temper that, they later introduced terrible child actors to take part in sketches - as mentioned here, the children of producer Kirkland and various cast members were used. It was not a great idea, as Kirkland claimed in this interview, it was a lousy, unfunny one, and provided another nail in 'The Benny Hill Show's' coffin.
Thames should have fired Dennis Kirkland, and given 'The Benny Hill Show' a year off to re-group with a fresh producer and writers, and some new ideas. Drop kicking a national treasure like Benny Hill - an international star, whose shows made Thames $100 million dollars in US sales alone - was short-sighted madness.
'The Benny Hill Show' was Benny's life, and had been for two decades. It consumed most of his waking thoughts. When he wasn't taping it from September each year at Thames Studios, a short stroll from his modest rented flat, he was jotting down ideas for gags and sketches. Depressed and pessimistic about the future, Benny sat snacking in front of the television - and gained weight.
He refused the lifesaving heart operation doctors told him he needed. Almost exactly three years after his devastating firing by Thames TV, Benny Hill died at home aged 68. He left the world an incredible legacy of great comedy material from down the years. The word 'Legend' is bandied about constantly by the media today, applied to some very unremarkable people, and consequently devalued. But Benny Hill was a true legend, and that rare thing - an almost universally beloved British comic of international fame, whose comedy was huge in America. If only he'd been handled in the right way, and got the quality TV management he so richly deserved. God bless you Benny!

I suspect he was being accurate when he said Benny wasn't close friends with those he worked with in spite of the close working relationships. The circumstances of Hill's death lying undiscovered in a rented flat where by choice he owned almost nothing were awful: a man who guarded his privacy and simply wanted to live a normal life as far as possible. I read somewhere that after his death his considerable wealth went to distant relatives in Australia who he'd never met.

One of the secrets of Shakespeare's popularity was that his work appealed for years to all Classes of Society. Many of Shakespeare's Plays contain zingers well understood by the Royals at the time while "the Peanut Gallery" were (ironically now) the area closest to the stage (but no seats, you had to stand). Simplicio and others were characters meant to appeal to that crowd.
When "The Simpsons", an American Animated Television Comedy was young and at its most popular, it tapped into that secret. Benny Hill had done so before them.
