The reliability of the system has been called into question over failures to satisfactorily distinguish the features of black people and particularly black women.
Here in the UK, the government has set up an official unit to investigate bias in facial recognition and other aspects of Artificial Intelligence.

Do you hear Asians complain about AI not being inclusive of them? No. The Chinese, Koreans, Japanese etc. make their own tech. Japan, in fact, is the most advanced country in the field of robotics and robotic AI and they couldn't give a shyte of being "inclusive" as long as their tech fits what they want it to do, and good for them. Here's a hint, if you feel your race isn't represented, instead of running around telling other people they need to include you, there's nothing stopping you from building and submitting your own databases or write "better" code and supply it to them or better yet, creating your own start-ups and profit from doing it better if you are able.

If you see a message of "don't talk, do" as racist, then that is exactly the attitude (especially from whites virtue signalling) that will keep a certain group of people from achieving. For African-Americans/African-British in particular, this reinforced victim mentality and saying other people should do this or that is prevalent across-the-board in every industry except one, and that is the one that has truly thrived. Charlie Parker and Louis Armstrong didn't go around bitching that there weren't enough blacks in marching bands, they went and made beautiful Jazz. Marvin Gaye didn't lead a protest for more blacks in "Nashville," he and others made "Motown" awesome. The Jacksons didn't insist that the Osmonds should have a black family member in it, they went and made the Jackson 5 superior. Jay Z didn't complain that their weren't enough black CEOs, he became CEO of his own record label. In every way, African-American music is a superb success story. Maybe there is a lesson in that, but hey, if you think my view that do>complain is racist, so be it.

Just because its harder to pick up black peoples faces using the current technology we have available does not prove intentional racism on the AI or its creators part. Yeah it probs needs to be fixed because its inaccurate/doesn't work properly but saying that this is proof of racism is pure assumption based conjecture.
Nobody is saying this AI is racist that would be ridiculous.. they are saying it's racially biased... which seems to be the case.
No one is saying it's intentional. It doesn't have to be explicitly thinking "well, let's specifically exclude black people from the dataset" to be racism; the racism is is being so accustomed to the "pale male" as the norm that no one saw any problem with the dataset being dominated by that type.

I know what would fix it! Demand diversity in men's pro sports like NFL and NBA because I see an unfair amount of black men in both sports they only make up a very small percentage of the population 13% if women are included but this is pro men's sports so we need to see more Asian and Latino men in basketball and football it's only fair and also more white men too it's predominantly black

AI learns - see "machine learning" - from datasets, and applies that learning to real-time data from sensors. So if your dataset is biased (e.g. for granting bail in the US judicial system), or the sensor is biased (e.g. colour-range/exposure balance in some digital camera models), the system cannot be anything other than biased. Note that I'm using 'biased' to mean "systematically in error" in the engineering sense, rather than "prejudiced" in the social/cultural/media sense.

It’s just dealing with data. Some things are naturally more difficult to encode. Just because it’s not perfect yet doesn’t mean it’s biased. It’s still in its early development.
you are right, but the conversation should not end with that. it should continue with how AI can be improved to avoid racial/ethnic bias, even if it's unintentional. all these qualified professionals in this video pretty much explained it all.

we feed data into these computers and when the computer gives us a result we do not agree we call it bias. There is always going to be bias in every study so I agree with the data's results. If we take China for example, in order for you to get good credit, you have to dress nice, make a certain amount of money, location of where you live, the battery life on your cell phone (the higher the battery life the better the score), the care you take on your cell phone (if it's crack you will get points deducted, and so forth. I agree with these results and working in customer service the low socio-economic status you are, the location of where you live and etc...is a perfect example of how the data is interpreted. Remember it is the ENTIRE data that is put in that the computer is interpreted as so if you disagree change the cause than you will have a different outcome. I just think she does not like the answer the computer is giving out. Everything in the world is biased so it is impossible to get that determinant removed.
We have to use outcomes to measure the efficacy of this technology though.

In LA, they use an algorithmic software called Paradigm (similar to investors using the same software to determine blue chip stocks) that collects these variables and with 97% accuracy the young men that commit low level crimes are pre-determined to be in prison again and again. It includes race, religion, socioeconomic level, location of residence and crime committed. So she doesn't like the outcomes because it's bias? It's the facts you input numbers and nothing else, computers, like all mathematical probabilities, will have +/- variances in every study but 97% is way too much to suggest the computer is biased. For LA, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and NYC the crime rate is very very high and with 97% accuracy the software can determined each and every individual as future criminals just like the movie minority report. Its real and China is already using this technology. So let's not be so sensitive and hurt as her, she needs to go to Baltimore, MD and see the poverty stricken area these democrats have done to those places and for over 50 years it has been run by democrats, that's a fact and they put that into a statistical analysis (which I don't think too many people realize) and can determined that data as factual so no biases in that. Class dismiss next week I will start grading your tests.

I don't see how locking people up in jail and throwing away the key is solving any problems. We need to instead focus on developing socioeconomic solutions that work for these people and give them another chance at life before deciding to keep them in a state of perpetual lockdown. Did you know I have been hospitalized more than one time, many, against my will and have suffered deleterious health effects? You are proposing to keep people like myself locked in that form of prison forever because a computer told you so. Do you realize how insane that sounds? I'm sure that if the superintelligence arrives one day that it won't be interested in these costly and dangerous solutions that will only harm society and delay the development and progress of it.

If you constantly commit crimes than you should be in prison or on death row, if you can change your outcome I support you but for many they can't and justice must be implemented, I took criminal behavior and know many correctional officers and police officers and they don't share your view they support the larger part of tax paying community and if you feel these people need special help then you should work with them instead of leaving everything to stats because these metrics is what many corporations and governments rely on, you're in the minority that doesn't see progress done because you support the 1% which is herecy, you have to look at it in a larger picture not a narrow perspective that you suggest, we are all relying on metrics to get things accomplished in life and your view is very dangerous to support the variances of statistical analysis you would fail in classrooms in taking these courses

After 5-10 years of activation post-S.I. everything seems normal and mass incarceration is a daily norm for racialized groups. After these years, we will see the S.I. slowly start to flag people like yourself and attempt to incarcerate as many humans as possible to execute their plan. Only the most stupid humans on earth would be permitted to walk free. A.I. wins. Now imagine a world where we trained the S.I. to be compassionate, reasonable, and true to the law that humanity has created? Would we have the same problem? I'm sure the S.I. would on the converse report human bias to us, if we trained it to be this way. The decisions we make today will impact tomorrow. Putting good people in a jail cell or mental hospital for life is not the answer.

@@spectralanalysis yeah those reasons are, higher data sets from white people (8-1 in the us), darker surfaces reflect less light, darker surfaces reflect less IR light (aka the main light detected by cameras and IR sensors) and color balancing, depth identification, etc
the facial recognition part is due to dark surfaces reflecting less light, so that should be corrected. The crime and job parts are not errors. They're a result of AI being objective and not having political biases
