Time Flies | Porcupine Tree | Full Band Cover

- The centerpiece of @PorcupineTreeOfficial 's The Incident is a poignant reflection on one's life before embarking on a new phase, and above all, a masterclass on modern progressive rock thanks to @StevenWilsonHQ 's songwriting, Gavin Harrison drumming, Colin Edwin's driving bass, and Richard Barbieri's lush synthesizer work.
I originally covered this song as part of my cover of the entire The Incident suite, which you can watch here: • The Incident | Porcupi...
However, with the arrival of new gear (an acoustic guitar and Shure SM7B) and plugins for my home studio, I thought it would be a good idea to do a standalone video of Time Flies with an updated mix for a number of reasons. First, I originally recorded the acoustic guitar part with my PRS P22's piezo pickup, but as I found out later, there's no substituting the depth and clarity of a miked up acoustic guitar. So I recorded those parts with an actual acoustic guitar and blended them with the original piezo parts to get a sound that's much fuller than the original cover.
Second, I re-recorded the lead vocal with a newly acquired Shure SM7B. This mic is much more suited to lead vocals thanks to its punch and warmth, compared to my AT2020, which is better suited to supporting vocals.
Third, I updated the mix with a new suite of Arturia plugins and some new learnings I've acquired in the past couple of months.
Fourth, it's usually good practice in content strategy to make standalone pieces of content from long, complex works like my cover of The Incident, but not wanting to do a lazy copy/paste job, I felt that the above upgrades were necessary to justify such an action. For good measure, I also updated the visuals with some seasonally appropriate imagery.
Speaking of visuals, the original Time Flies had no narrative connection to the rest of the suite, so I used a great deal of creative license to make it a part of the story. In short, the young man who features prominently in the video is haunted in his sleep by the spirit of a girl from a car accident he witnessed. Deeply affected by the frailty of life, he reflects on his childhood and regrets and musters the will to let go of his emotional baggage and move on to greener pastures.

Awesome job guys!!!
I had to check your profile at least four times to make sure I wasn't tripping. Nate, it's a huge, huge honor and it made my year for you to watch and comment. I've watched your bass videos for years and saw you perform with PT in Germany last year. Thank you so very much.
As any PT fan, I saw this and said "alright..."
Acoustic guitar tone *nailed*. Your voice is different from Stevens, but that's okay. Appreciate the updates lyrics.
First time flies I was like "wait isn't that layered?"
Second one: 😁
Killed it. All of you great job.
Props to the drummer, who really nailed this. Nice bass playing too.
I'll be sure to relay your compliment to him, thanks!
thank you
beautiful and full of skillfulness
Woah, i was a little sceptical in the first 2 minutes but that changed after a while. I realized the amount of work that's in the video. The best thing is that the notes you added yourself, actually suit the song. That's grand. Good job!
Thanks so much.
Best cover of the song!
astounding bass work there, wow
Best PT cover I've seen so far - awesome work guys🎉
That's a huge compliment, thanks so much.
Amazing!!!!!
sooooo good, full band!!
Intro threw me off but that shit was amazing and this whole cover is simply perfect as you can see how much passion went into this
Thanks. It felt weird for me to sing "I was born in '67", so tweaks to the lyrics made me feel more comfortable singing those lines.
@@gothikserpentmusic makes sense and adds to the song for sure keep doing what y'all are doing
well done in that mid section, that must have been quite hard to get right, hard to even work it all out and understand what you're hearing to play it all back. really impressive.
Thanks. Yup, it took many many listens to get a feel for all the layers.
Time Flies .... now you are treading on sacred territory .... and you fracking nail it. Amazing. Take a bow!
Thanks so much!

You have changed a couple of strings.
I was born in 1986
Year of great disaster
Did you mean Chernobyl disaster?
Yes, and the space shuttle challenger disaster, which happened only two days before I was born.
