It's nice that there are still people in Japan who are willing to spend a lot of money on things like this wall and thus preserve the old crafts. The combination of clay and straw was the first use of composite material which, amazingly, was invented independently in several places on earth. Our ancestors didn't have computers, but they were still very innovative.
I think that is exactly right.
This technology is simple and has been used all over the world.
I feel that it is this traditional technology that has the attractiveness that is produced.
I had no idea of the fermentation step and it was eyes opening. Thank you. I dream of making a similar construction here in Germany mixing japanese and european techniques. You are such an inspiration

The Master (Sensei?) reminds us Westerners of the ideas of buildings lasting for centuries. I doubt many builders in the modern Western traditions consider the longevity of their work, or the attitudes and appreciation of the work such as this very basic yet complex wall. The owner must be recognized for the salvage of the roof tile and perhaps the cut stone elements of the back side of the wall. The video production enhances our appreciation of this very unusual project, both in its type and size. Thank you very much!

This is absolutely wonderful, reminded me of the time when I was building my raised garden beds with blue stones. Didn’t have any cement but lots of clay soils and straw laying around, mixing them all up with water and used them as mortar as a test ( as I have seen similar videos like these before ). It’s been five years since and my garden beds still going strong ( lots of luck on my part 😊).
Old school ways and knowledge in utilising natural materials still proven the best I think 🤔.

what a wonderful video. Enclosing the garden or property with earth, its warmth, its coolness, truly a work of art. Using fermentation, old 100 year old tiles brings us to the present yet leaves room for experimentation in the future.

Tips: "1 Month Later" and "3 Months Later" - anything more than 1 means an 's' is added.
I am really interested in how the pond was made. In general, how ponds are traditionally made. Even with most of the way reading through Sakuteiki as written by Jīro Takei and Marc P. Keane. It would be very helpful to see it in practice.

Me sorprende ver lo similar que es a la construcción española de hace siglos... Con caña, no con bambú. Aún se encuentran casas cuyas paredes son de adobe! La casa donde yo vivo es de hace 300 años. Hemos derribado varias paredes de tierra mezclada con paja y palitos de madera...
Espero que su muro, señor, se mantenga en pie durante 500 años, por lo menos!

Thanks for this video. Why does mister Hajime Atarashi believe the wall will survive centuries? In my experience wood that comes into contact with soil will decompose. Is it preserved by the fermentation process?
Of course, the soil will be ravaged by rain and temperature. But since the structure is not exposed to water, it does not collapse easily. Of course, it will still weaken gradually though 😊.

Why was the roof completed first?
If you waited, you could have filled the framework with clay/straw from above, tamped it into place and then placed roof on top.
Seems inconvenient to fill the center of the wall from the sides.....
The reason is that it was winter when they started making them!
Putting soil in in the winter is difficult because it freezes. So this time they made the roof first😊.
