The square is a symbol of feeling and desire, and the points of the compass are rightness and reason to circumscribe your feelings and desires aka morality..The conscious light is truth, because it reveals things as they are, not as they appear... more light...Divine Geometry.....

I have always wondered why some say "square and compass" while others say "square and compasses". I have always understood it to be a compass or pair of compasses. I notice in our Michigan ritual book it is square and compasses does this have any tie to masonic history because it seems modern dictionaries call it a compass and not compasses.

Adam Elsesser Technically, I think it can be called either. Compass is the correct term for that drawing tool and pair of compasses is correct as well. It seems the difference may be simply if the mason (or whoever wrote the ritual for that jurisdiction) focuses on the singular aspect of "A PAIR of compasses" they will use "square and compass" while those who focus on the plural aspect of "a pair of COMPASSES" will use "square and compasses". Let's just be thankful there is obviously only one square ;)

@@michiganmasonicmuseumandli7153 In my jurisdiction (Victoria, Australia), it's always compasses, while compass is a navigation tool. Square is always singular, unless we are talking about squares in general, or a number of squares. Technically, the Masonic square is a TRY square. Other types of squares include T squares and set squares.

@@natureswrath7665 Ok care to explain then? Regardless, freemasonry is satanic to the core. Even Buddhists, Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus can all pray together in a masonic brotherhood. There’s only one God and that is the Son of God Jesus Christ. You cannot pray together as one with pagans.

@@jchan81 Ah, your the religious zealot type, so much for bonding with your common man and setting aside differences, what separates you from a mason is that masons regardless of their chosen faith work together to be better people, masonry isn't a religious group so they have no obligation to only accept one religion, it is banned to talk about one's individual faith in the lodge as it would cause spiritual conflict, stop viewing everything as satanic if it isn't a church and maybe you'll find that life can be more beautiful, masonry is not telling people to not be Christian, it simply offers a way to learn some moral lessons and build a better community regardless of religions.

Repent before it’s too late. Masonry is of satan. Matthew 5:33-37
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
