    When you cut a bunch of lines in a sheet of wood for the purpose of bending it into a curved shape, that process is called "𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠". When done correctly, those cuts are all filled in with epoxy prior to making the bend, so once the piece is bent and cured, it is as strong as it ever was before "𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠". It is a fine way to build neat looking cabinets and that spectral decay chart speaks for itself. A knuckle tap really says nothing, but that spectral chart sure said a mouthful. Cheers 🍻

    • @sptauto
      @sptauto Před rokem +12

      The knuckle-tap method excites the panel, allowing you to demonstrate a lack of rigidity. If you can hear the shape of the box from knocking on it, that means it's weak and under dampened.
      That's not very scientific, but it was never claimed to be. It doesn't always mean that there's going to be ringing either, but it does mean that low frequency energy is going to be absorbed and dissipated through the panels rather than properly contained and projected outward. Low frequencies have more energy to contain. Precisely why subwoofer cabinets can be seen 1 1/2-inch thick or greater, using MDF or HDF. Bracing serves the same purpose, increasing panel rigidity. However, it can also divide air spaces within your enclosure. This can be used to your advantage, or could otherwise be a disadvantage.
      High frequencies don't present us with this same issue, because there isn't nearly as much energy behind them. Plus, the typical resonance for a speaker cabinet is well below the playable range of a high frequency driver (6kHz - 20kHz).

      @@sptauto:
      I didn't say there was anything wrong with a knuckle tap, I do it too out of curiosity. But it's still just noise for the sake of making it. Only the measurements mean anything in this regard and that was the only point I made. He was implying that kerfing was a bad way of curving a cabinet panel, but his measurements prove that it wasn't bad at all, quite the opposite in fact. Cheers 🍻

    • @sptauto
      @sptauto Před rokem +3

      @@Finite-Tuning The knuckle-tap method isn't about panel resonance or ringing. It's about panel reflections and their ability to contain low frequency energy. The spectral decay didn't show anything because it's completely unrelated. Resonance is something that you could test by sticking your head into the enclosure and humming different notes.

      A knuckle tap is not a test! It is merely and simply a thing we all do to crudely gauge material density. Those with enough experience can gain a preconceived notion of how a box will measure, but in the end It is all about resonance and the measurement of those provable facts! You must be able to know/understand a thing, long before you can fix a thing. If knuckle tap hill is where you want to set up camp, then cheers to ya 🍻.

    This one actually didn't look too terrible upfront! It seems like it would be worth putting in a few more parts to smooth out that dip at 7khz, hump at 10khz, and an impedance trap. Curious to know how much more money that would cost... NoRez would help too. A good note below saying that kerfed panels should be filled with epoxy before bending. Would make the side walls alot stiffer, and probably even moving the resonance point of the cabinet higher too. Overall, seems to be a pretty decent little speaker for the price. Look at it another way - take a look at their higher end models and see that they use high quality air core inductors, claritycaps and mundorf resistors. The speaker here was an entry level to the brand with a lower build budget and intentionally designed to not be as good as the next levels up. The same can be said for B&W ranges.

    I’m not sure if your logic on the cost and mark-up adds up, but I could be wrong. So it stands to reason that a cheap $250 speaker cost the manufacturer about $50 to produce. Ok, fair enough. Maybe even less, I’d say. When I look at, say, Def Tech powered towers, with tons of cheap drivers, cheap amp and cloth-covered cabinet, I would agree. Are you saying that a $5000 pair of speakers has a cost of roughly $1000? A $10,000 pair costs $2k to build? THAT is where your law of diminishing returns comes in. A consumer potentially pays 10 grand only to get an additional $1000 benefit over the $5k pair of speakers. Added value becomes very minimal, all while profit margin increases. Best off negotiating at least 10-20 % off the high-end stuff👍🏻

      Negotiating a price discount just affects the retailer not the supplier. Not long ago I posted a comment referencing an article that stated the “cost of goods sold” for a speaker is maximum 30% of retail. The retailer gets 50% and therefore has room to negotiate. The article went on to state that the cabinet is usually 50% of the “cost of goods” and goes up for more exotic finishes. So, for this speaker, cabinet is $180 min, leaving $180 for 4 drivers, 2 crossover boards, wiring and 4 terminals. Actually not bad and Danny’s mods made it really good.

      If the speaker is using high end WBT binding posts they are mentioned for their sonic purity and high quality copper.

Where high power handling and potential saturation of the iron core are not issues they may be the better choice. Not really to make them better. Sonus faber has the Sonus faber voice that is beautiful. If you change parts you will no longer have the sound of Sonus faber. Grafs and electronic measurements don't do it for me. Especially when it comes to sound. You need to listen and make your choice of a speaker that sounds great to you. This and the lumina are a total ripoff and junk. My old NHT C3 measure and sound better for a FRACTION of the cost.

    Ridiculous using so many cheap parts to get worse performance than fewer higher quality parts that COULD have been done for the same budget. Just to give people some idea, 11 components for this little 2-way is 2 more than Tekton Moab 3-way. That is lame.
