  • Austria is snowed under -- to the delight of skiers and the horror of homeowners. Even older Austrians are amazed by the amount of snow that’s fallen in a matter of days.
    Soldiers, firefighters and volunteers are helping in the most affected areas. Austria is used to dealing with large amounts of snow, but this year the country has received far more than usual. Meter-high piles cover the rooftops and rising temperatures are leading to rising fears that roofs could collapse. In the village of Altaussee in Styria, residents whose homes lay below the Loser Mountain were evacuated due to the risk of an avalanche. Meanwhile, in Saalfelden in the state of Salzburg, the Austrian army’s helicopter unit has been taking to the air to pinpoint unstable snowpack that could trigger avalanches. On January 12, a group of skiers was killed in an avalanche near the Alpine resort of Lech, after using a trail that was closed due to unsafe conditions. Still, at ski resorts like Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the mood is upbeat. Here the snow is good for business and a source of pleasure for holidaymakers. A report by Mariel Müller and Marc Erath

    I am so jealous, I would give anything to get this much snow in London. We only get snow occasionally here, and it's usually only a small amount. I don't see what their problem is, it's absolutely beautiful.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 Před 5 lety +1

      The irony is that a carbon tax is the free market approach to dealing with an economic externality like pollution. With an economic externality, it's not the producer or the consumer that pays the costs of the pollution but everyone whether or not they consumed the product or service hence the tax attributes the cost to the product and service while the revenue's collected are rebated equally to everyone. Then the free market takes the presumably appropriate measure to reduce the consumption of the product or service. To complain about the carbon tax is like saying you have the right to pilfer everyone else's pocket.
      Now look at what the conservative Ford government proposes as an alternative, public funds to incentize major producers to reduce their carbon production. That's simply selective cronyism to their financial donors. Not very financially conservative is it.
      There are problems with taxation as the solution to an economic externality. For one, it's subject to bureaucratic corruption and inefficiencies. Even if done efficiently, it may displace social benefits from other revenue sources. The rebates may not reach the most marginalized citizens who have often just given up filing income tax reports. But you're just putting your foot in your mouth when you denigrate carbon tax on your apoarently ignorant and likely non-existent grounds.

      Jittery Cursor88 I thought the same thing when he said it! And I’m a university math professor. If no new snow falls on the roof, then warming temperatures won’t increase the weight on the roof, but comparing weight amounts with a visual estimate, then I could see how the same volume would weigh a bunch more.

I know it doesn't happen in UK as often, but you'd think we could be more prepared, if you know you have to drive in bad weather lay layers of blankets over the car seats,or those thin shiny fold up blankets if you have to, have a flask of hot drink + supply of snacks etc, etc, make sure you have extra water, petrol med kit and empty bottles or tub tissues/wipes for when you need the loo.
