  • IS ECODIESEL A GOOD ENGINE many ask this question if the diesel fuel engine offered in the ram 1500 pickup truck and jeep grand cherokee is a good offering or if the 3.0L V6 diesel engine is more trouble than the good fuel economy and mpg are worth should you get a eco diesel engine in your truck watch this video to find out if its reliable

Try adding a GDE (Green Diesel Engineering) tune. Mileage goes up, turbo lag goes away. Accelerator responds like a gas driven truck. After 90,000 miles mine drives like new. You can run your finger inside of the exhaust pipe outlet and there isn't a spec of black/carbon. Love this truck!

You can trace back a ton of issues on modern diesel engines (not just oil contamination) to EGR crap.
EGR on an engine is like eating your own poop because you want to eat less food. No one would do that, but well, emissions standards :).

I bought my 2015 Outdoorsman Crew cab 4x4 Ecodiesel brand new in April of that year. It has the 3.55 ratio differentials and the 44-45 transfer case so no 4wd auto. I've had all recalls performed except the last flash to run off camshaft signal if crank signal is lost. I have just under 118,000 miles. I've done 10,000 mile interval oil changes myself since new. I don't use the Rotella T6 oil. Good oil samples every oil change. The only engine issues I've had were a bad EGR cooler, and the throttle valve went out. All covered under powertrain and AEM warranties respectively. I've done some towing and I've taken it on several off road trips in the Colorado mountains. As far as I'm concerned it has been a great truck.

Exact same story here zayoutlaw. 2015 SLT ecodiesel. I use the rotella T6. All my own work , oil fuel and air filters. Minimal towing but daily commuter on a mountain highway. ( Rural town ). All updates done with EGR recall done. It’s been flawless. 165,000km. ( Canada ). Use it a bit every year for firewood. I use the full interval time, but I’m thinking of doing a shorter interval for longevity. Committed to driving it long term. At this point it’s cheaper to replace the engine if needed then buy a new 2500hd. And trucks are hard to find right now. Plus mines paid fir , no debt no payment. Gonna just stay tight on the maintenance and enjoy it.

They fixed the EGR problem with the GEN three engines. You now get a low pressure EGR with those engines and it’s after the DPF with no soot going back into the engine. If you have the earlier engine, your best choice is to change the oil every 3000 miles and use the best oil from redline oil. Also consider doing a BG crank case cleaning every once in a while for the bearings not to get choked by too much soot.

The emissions equipment, specifically the egr is probably the worst thing for the motor recirculating all that junk back into it. Its a good motor, and I think a lot of different failure scenarios are probably related to egr failures, and other things, as well as the weak crank shaft which has been noted over the years. Its best to run it, and keep the rpms's up and keep up with the maintenance schedule as best as possible.

After seeing that one engine torn down from south Africa and the bottom end damage and clogged journal bearing oil passages, I think the biggest issues is the oil change intervals being 10k. With the egr emissions set up, the oil simply gets dirty sooner than later and needs to come out far sooner than 10k. I hate canister filters because they aren't protected by a metal cage and so when they get clogged, they start to collapse. If the filter collapses, then it will bypass so now you're getting dirty contaminated oil going down and slowing clogging up those journal bearing passages. When I buy one of these eco-diesels early next year, I'm going to install a remote industrial size spin on filter and bypass that canister B.S. and change the oil and filter every 5k.

I've owned a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited for almost 4 full years now, 75K miles driven and here is what I think... I really like it, especially after putting the Banks Pedal thing and Derringer on it (put on at 60k). The truck drives like it has a Hemi now... without the kit the truck drove and accelerated like a tractor. The throttle response was borderline dangerous, now she gets up and goes with authority... Only regret with the Banks is not doing it sooner.
The only other gripe I have is how damn expensive it is to service, every time I would go to the dealer it would be $600 for an oil change, even going to a good shop now where the owner and I are friend's it is still crazy.
Do I like it overall... yes. Would I buy another diesel in a half ton? No. I'd rather have the gas version. On that same token I would NEVER buy a gas 3/4 ton truck

My truck had major problems with the regen system always said 90 to 100%, when it said 100%, it always said I had to go to the dealer and then it would go into limp mode and I would have to unhook the battery for the day and then it would go back to where I could drive it and it got so frustrating, and the dealer wanted $5,000 to attempt to fix it. I found a friend who knew an ecodiesel mechanic and hetook the endeavor on. He took the EGR off of it, reprogrammed the computer put a cold air intake on it We had to change the turbo put a brand new intake manifold on it because it was so clogged up but a straight pipe for it from the turbo back to the muffler The truck has a 40 horsepower tune on it, it doesnt shoot out any black smoke, when you nail it down it will put out a little bit of smoke, but not like what you see these other big coal burners doing. I run blue molly oil in it now, I have a fast lift pump on it. The truck runs great on flat roads where I drive distance is on I get over 32 to 34 miles per gallon at 70 mph, in the city driving I get 22 to 24 miles per gallon. My tune does not have a transmission tune to it it's just the engine tune none of my service lights come on anymore. And none of that stuff on my truck was warrantied by the dealer The truck had less than 100,000 mi on it it's a 2014 the regen was so messed up it had to be replaced and they wanted too much money when we pulled the intake manifold off at its plastic it was totally dunked up with silt had to be replaced you can buy new ones on eBay for 250 bucks I was going to go with a cast one that's 800 bucks but I was told by my mechanic it will make the engine too hot The turbo was was burnt up we put a new turbo on it I was lucky I had one of those aftermarket warranties it covered almost everything I went to tuner Depot and got the pipe that goes from the bottom of the turbo to my muffler. You can really hear the turbo now when you're in the truck going along when it goes on it's nothing like a big Cummings but it's only a 3 l diesel and I'm getting 30 miles per gallon so good luck all, oh by the way the truck is much happier with the stuff off of it it wasn't designed in Italy to have all this on it, if you saw what the EGR cooler and the plastic intake manifold look like inside it's ridiculous there were totally clogged The regen underneath the truck was so clogged it had to be replaced, I didn't want to spend five grand and the dealer said it could take 6 months to fix all this stuff because where I live there's only two dealers within 50 miles and nobody gets parts, and the mechanics do not want to work on these trucks they call in sick from what I understand,

Do you run Lucas synthetic with the oil? I'm thinking about doing that when I lease one of these. I have always put Lucas in all of my trucks including my 92 Cummins.

What did you do about the oil leak. I got the gen 3 ecodiesel and have a leak in the same location and had the oil filter housing replaced but still leaking. Curious how it got fixed or is this something we just live with

Wow, so yes it’s a great engine until it has catastrophic failure. Ouch! Possible contamination from the EGR system? Also issues with oil cooler failure pretty common. Check your reservoir for chocolate milk look. Also DEF and Catalytic converter issues. So if you have to take this to the shop every time you have an issue that could get pretty expensive. If you buy one used, get a good extended warranty!
