Tim Burton's 1992 follow up to his smash hit Batman film. Batman returns stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Danny DeVito as Penguin, Christopher Walken as Max Shreck with special guest appearances by Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Batman (89) had been incredibly successful but the Director was lured back with the promise of making a sequel a proper 'Tim Burton' film. How did that work out?

I love this movie! It's my favourite Batman. Catwoman is amazing and so is the Penguin. It's darker and quirkier than the first. I actually like the story better too... and I like Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton together. Great soundtrack too

I agree, it's in my view certainly the best of this Batman run.

@@ian_b I've watched this countless times since it came out and something about it always seems off to me. The cast, soundtrack, sets and atmosphere is great but I dunno it's never worked for me this one.

At the time I was more of a Burton fan (and, well, a Michelle Pfeiffer fan) than a Batman fan, so of course I really liked this one.

dude WTF after 20 year people still could not figure out the puzzle that the penguin in this movie was not actually raised by the penguins
he was raised by the circus people who used the abandoned zoo's arctic segment to keep penguins for their shows

I love it save for Penquin's grossness. Still more good than bad. I would have nominated Pfeiffer for best supporting Oscar btw: brilliant work!

Darker, quirkier, but in it's own way just as camp.

1:22 - I always wondered if the fact that all the computers in this film were Apple //'s were product placement.

I have gone back n forth, but overall this is a good film to me. Lots of interesting scenes, even though I originally didn't like Penguin's being raised by Penguins in a sewer etc etc. Great Sega CD and SNES games.

_The_ "dark" Batman film - much ahead of its time!

I remember seeing this at the cinema on release (yes, I'm that old), and being vaguely dissatisfied... but not sure why. Later re-watches I found I really enjoyed it, more than the original 1989 movie. Or maybe that was just accepting it for what it was, not a Batman movie by Tim Burton, but a Tim Burton movie that had Batman in it. Also Michelle in that Catsuit, I mean, c'mon!

Tbf Batman was sidelined in favour of Joker in the '89 film. Never thought it was a good decision for that one - Batman's whole arc in that film feels like it should have been him initially setting out for revenge against Napier but slowly come to realise that his role as Batman is about justice. It might even have given this film a bit more weight, especially with him insisting that Catwoman hand Shreck over to the police. That said, I feel Batman in this one acts much like the detective in a film noir: while he's the central figure/integral to the story, he's more a catalyst for these other characters/the mystery around him. Personally, I think Batman Returns is a much better film. It's absurd (why does Batman take off his mask when Shreck is standing a few feet away from him? Even if he'd been knocked out it'd have made more sense) but the cinematography/characters are so exaggerated you go with it.

I think it's one of the more ambitious ones. I would take this over the forever grim, angst ridden Batman.

Anybody who thinks Batman would need to return doesn't understand the character. Bruce Wayne will dress up in the cowl until he no longer can. And that's why he had Dick, Jason, and Tim.
Also, the Penguin is not a mutant. He's just a guy with a weird walk. Who somehow became a major criminal. The Riddler either wants to prove he's smarter than Batman, or his guilty conscience wants to get caught. But he doesn't want to kill people. Not like the Joker.

3:57 I just love that phrase "fell pregnant". Sounds VERY painful to me! It always seems to describe an unwanted pregnancy, with a little tinge of immorality. It's no worse than "she got herself pregnant", however.

  • @voodeux_badeux

There are plenty of people (myself included) that only enjoy Batman because of his villains. Bruce Wayne is boring, Batman presents himself are a twisted Boy Scout….YAWN. Tim Burton did the right thing not focusing on him but using his name for promotion. This film was always gonna be about the villains….a first of its kind.

Best Batman live action movie beside Dark Knight. The sets are awesome, the score is great, awesome cinematography. i love the athmosphere in the movie. The villains and the action get enough screentime (unlike the first Batman) and it has a good pace (unlike the first). Michelle Pfeiffer ist still the best character. De Vito´s Penguin was more interesting than the bland version from the comics.

It’s silly. Not a fan of Danny DeVito or Michelle Pfeffermusse. On a purely superficial level, the former is too ridiculous and the latter is too skinny.

It's an okay movie, but was too much of a "Burton" movie and not enough of a Batman movie. Producer Jon Peters reign in his quirkiness on the first movie which is why it was better than this one.

I take it as an anomaly among Batman stories. Something that is in the Batman universe but not really about Batman.
