Hello! Pursuing a career as a doctor in Spain after graduating from medical school in Ukraine involves several important steps and requirements:
Language Proficiency: Since Spanish is the primary language used in medical practice in Spain, proficiency in Spanish is crucial. You will likely need to pass a language proficiency test.
Validation of Your Degree: You'll need to have your medical degree recognized in Spain. This process is known as "homologación" (recognition) or "convalidación" (validation). It involves submitting your credentials to the Spanish Ministry of Education and Professional Training for equivalence verification.
Medical Licensing Exam: Foreign medical graduates must pass a medical licensing exam, similar to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) in the US. In Spain, this test is known as the "Examen MIR" (Médico Interno Residente). The MIR is a competitive exam that determines your eligibility for a residency position in your chosen specialty.
Residency: To practice as a specialized doctor, you must complete a residency program in Spain, which you enter by ranking well on the MIR exam. Residency programs in Spain typically last between four and five years, depending on the specialty.
Registration: After passing the MIR and completing your residency, you must register with the local medical association in the region of Spain where you plan to work.
Work and Residence Permit: As a non-EU citizen, you will also need to obtain a work and residence permit to legally work in Spain.
