- I recently acquired Honda ATC250R TWO STROKE BARN FIND BUT WILL IT RUN? HONDA ATC 250R 1986 Honda 250r not an 85 and see what it will take to bring her back to life: carb rebuild, new plastics, seat repair, brakes, exhaust, grips, levers, paint, powder coat, tires, wheels and of course tuning, the list is pretty long. From trash to cash this is a diamond in the rough for sure.

Just Fired up a 1985 250R today just stoked this one was clean spending the last 12 years in a storage container in Las Vegas, alot of after market parts on it, a family Gem!

Your channel is gonna blow up from this! I’ve always wanted a 250r, 350x and a 250sx I’ve had pretty much all the rest every one I always come across have been beaten up or molested… one day my friend… one day ps: those plastics might buff out it will be a ton of work but a new set or used set are a ton of money!

just got my first 1983 185cc ATC no seat, no lights, no tank but engine turns but got no spark... spent a whooping $100 for it. it's just for fun and needs a lot of clean up.. wish me luck and thanks for your videos.. excellent teaching and now i can figure out the spark issue quickly bc of the first video I watched of yours! thanks again.
185s is a great bike, quick and very nimble. I made two video that may help you with spark. 1. How to save a 3 wheeler and 2. No spark bad cdi. Between them you sould be fine. Good luck!

Awesome find ! New sub! My neighbor had one bk in the day I loved to ride it. Just hated kick starting it without proper protection I was like 13 years old weighing 100lbs 1993. But I would jump till it started. Or we would push start it all the neighbor kids. Man good times. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I have an 85 in almost perfect condition, has all 3 gold wheels, and the original front tire still on the original bore, but new piston and rings, I bought I years ago, and just don't have the heart to sell it, love snow riding up here in the North East
Outstanding, those "barn finds" are still out there. I will say if you chose to sell it, the market is really hot right now for liquid cooled 250r's. Depending on condition anywhere from 4k to 10k. I am keeping me, but can understand why others choose to sell.

You talked about posters. When I was a teenager, I use to go into the local Honda shop all the time. I would get the brochures , and cut the pictures out and hang on them my wall. I had all the 3-wheels and dirt bikes. One I remember specifically was a white 200x. I was thinking it had to be around 1987. I wanted one so bad!!
86 and 87 would both been white, and very collectable today. I have never owned one. They are a lot more 83-85 it seems

Thanks Pat, I feel the same way. Yeah I should have pulled the carb, but I just couldnt help myself, everything up to that point was working so well, I wanted to see if she would hit. I have brought many old Hondas back to life, but this one is special. Thanks for watching
If the plastics aren’t broken and just faded. You can definitely restore them, same thing with the gas tanks, I’ve restored many fenders, First get a pack of red scotch brite pads, and a water hose nearby and just clean off the top layer and the entire fender, after that start with 400grit sandpaper and go all the way to 2000grit, and then polish them with a dry buffing pad, no buffing compound. They’ll come out looking like new. Its a bit time consuming, but at the end It’s well worth doing, especially since those are the OEM fenders. And you can still buy reproduction decals.
Hi john, your 100% correct OE fender can be sanded and buffed, these are old aftermarket fenders on the rear the front is OE but has a huge crack running through it, as much as I like the "found" look, its hard to beat some nice bright red fenders! Thanks for watching!

When it runs away its in lean condition and the electrode on spark plug can get hot and act like a glow plug they will run with no spark plug wire during hard runaway

Mr Build you cant beat a Honda 10yrs no starter fluid I will keep it also WILD
Check the water pump area. The magnesium corrodes with the coolant. My cover on my 1986 CR125 had lots of holes in it. I had to repair the holes and replace the impeller. I am using Evans waterless coolant so it does not happen again.

I've had some runaways ...some pretty bad before I knew about doing leak downs on my 2 strokes but now I know just pin open the throttle it should bog out every time due to its already sucking air from somewhere so at wide open throttle it gets way too much air ....now I leak down my 2strokes any time they act funny 5psi for 5 minutes if it don't hold get the dish soap spray bottle

When a 2 stroke runs away sometimes the ignition won’t kill it. It will diesel and ignite off of pressure. When this happens the only way to kill it is cut off the air. Always have it where u can cover air intake with your hand.
Your exactly right I've had the plug wire off and it stayed running I was horrified and fascinated at the same time then realized stalling was the only option
@@tricycleguy2657 had this happen to a 78yz 250 i am putting back together last week, luckily I had the plug loose as I was still messing with things and it vibrated loose enough to kill compression

No doubt you can put a lot of money into it and when it comes to stuff like this, you just don't think about the money, you just do what it takes to get it running good and safe and keep it in the family forever because you will never get out of it what you put into it. I found out first hand how hard to get some parts can be and how damn spendy they are. My Wife kinda thinks I am a little crazy for sinking the $$ into the 1984 model I bought last summer but I told her "Honey" it's an obsession, I wanted it and I don't give a damn what I have to do to get it in tip top operating shape. Now to completely restore it, nah, ain't gonna go that far because I do want to ride it, not look at it! Good luck with yours! if you need stuff, I recommend BDT motorsports in California. I know where a 1985 250r is at that has under 10 hrs on it. The original owner still has it but just never rode it. Last time I saw it it was sitting outside and I was giving him shit about it because it was starting to rust.

Seems a striped sprocket retaining bolt might have sidelined it. I spent 2 hours tapping the threads, waiting on chain and sprockets now.
Sounds minor, sad how she got left for dead... in her tracks. ✌️
Hey bud, I've got a tri-moto 125 (much improved from stock, bored carb and PK exhaust, quick little guy for sure), that ran great until one day I ran out of top tank gas and it ran lean until I slowed and turned on the reserve. After that day it would take 6-10 pulls to start when it usually took 1-2. Then one day it almost killed me. After finally getting it started in the garage, it was high idling (normal when cold), so I always put it in gear and hold the brakes until the RPM's relax.. well this day I'm telling you when I put it in gear, she took off like a RAPED APE!! and threw me off the back while trying to get traction on my leg nearly snapping my leg off at the knee. Boy did that hurt. Should have gone to the ER, but got lucky with prayer I think.. almost 100% six months later.
Anyway, do you have anyway to know why it "ran away" like that? Did I create an air leak somewhere maybe? What would you check first? Thanks
I agree it's an air leak. I'd adjust the valves first, if the intake is tight it will idle high. If there good then a good carb cleaning should help. Keep us posted.

@@aaronhansen8037 yes when I first removed the plug I sprayed some lubes down the cylinder. I did this with the plan to do a compression test, and check for spark. My gauge did fit, so I had to skip the compression test

Hi what Engine oil do you recommend for a 250r
I run t6 rotella. Some like t4. I have used transmission fluid in the past for pulling out water that was in an engine.

So did you figure out why it was parked?
So far all I can find is a gawled output shaft threads. I retapped it for the correct bolt. I'm waiting on chain and sprockets now.
