- Volvo's new S60 sedan is more than just the S90's mini-me, it's a truly competitive European luxury sedan. High on looks, value and acceleration this Volvo should be on your shopping list. Oh, and we drove the Polestar Engineered version too...

What Volvo has done in the last 3 years has been incredible. They've completely revamped their lineup with kick ass vehicles. I have an XC40 as well as an S60 on my shortlist.
Illmatic662 commie crap
Illmatic662 propaganda commie
I was gonna get the older generation S60 but this one is way better and bigger.
Far too much electronics for no good reason.
Only the S90 is manufactured in China and it's designed in Sweden, as usual.
I strongly prefer amber turn signals. They eliminate any opportunity for confusion between brake lights and turn signals. And I think that amber lights appear more visible than red.
That is so true Mr. Ehlers.
Totally agreed. What’s worse is when the brake light IS the turn signal. I see it on some older trucks and it’s extremely annoying. It’ll even blink the third brake light just to add to the confusion. I hate it. Amber leaves no room for confusion
Nope, ruins the car's design. In fact there should be no amber turn signals at all. Front and back.
I hate turn signals. In fact there should be no turn signals at all. Front and back. Prefer the old way of hand signals.
@@nomo3o No it doesn't. Red turn signals is stupid. Something Chevy needs to work on.
Regarding the turn indicators, I prefer the amber lenses simply because they more clearly denote the driver's intentions.
David Wolf plus, if one break light is broken and it would be used as a turning indicator it actually can create a hazard.
Little bit less leg room in the back due to the battery, LOL! Arely fits a toddler.
Red indicators to me ONLY if the housing is independent of the brake housing. I like the uniform look.
I also prefer amber turn signals. 🤷♂️
Assuming other drivers actually use their turn signals...
I prefer amber turn signals. Red should be used for brakes.
Totally agreed! I’m from Europe and can tell that red sometime hard to notice compare to amber
I prefer amber brake lights
It is ilegal in Sweden. Volvo s60's in sweden has orange/yellow turn signals...
bird271828 yes! I thought I was the only person who felt this way.
those crappy commie cars come with brakes?
Without a doubt amber...I always appreciated that when I was in Europe.
Hello Alex on Autos, just wanted to say I find your car reviews to be very comprehensive because you provide the most technical information, compared to other reviewers on CZcams. Also, thanks for using that information in comparison to the competition. Your reviews are very unbiased, which I appreciate, and I find them very entertaining.
I vote amber turn lights.
Amber turn signals are actually safer too: www.iihs.org/iihs/sr/statusreport/article/44/8/3
YES! lets unite to make those US taillight regulations disappear!!
100% agreed. Red turn signals suck.
Love the detailed lighting segment. Rear fogs intrigue me greatly as a simple Yank. Great video as usual!
Wow! The styling is absolutely incredible! Simplistic, yet perfectly tasteful... I have to say, Volvo has definitely been knocking it out of the park lately.
I need to review one of these for sure! Also, I can't wait to review the new V60, as well.
As always, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work!
Alex on Autos reviews are among the best on CZcams. Well researched, smartly scripted, and intelligently delivered. He has helped me pare down the choice(s) for my next car. But he’s done such a good job on each, I’m having trouble making a final decision! Red or amber turn signals? Doesn’t matter if drivers don’t use them.
500 lb-ft of torque and 415hp is MORE THAN ENOUGH in a performance compact sedan jesus CHRIST
Another brilliant, honest, informative and objective review. A real eye opener. I’m now considering the Volvo S60 as my next car. Thank you, Alex.
My very first Volvo sedan!! Good job Alex.
i love how he's so calm and professional while hauling ASS down these roads. the mountain roads here in southern california are no joke lol
Beautiful review, you certainly deserve many million subscribers
That should be the FIRST and the most detailed new S60 real review on CZcams.
Most beautiful in it's class, looks at those lines 😍
Really a very good, thorough review. Nicely done!
Gotta love tapping my brakes to the music and making the drivers behind me think my hazard lights are on. ;)
Sometimes I like to break like that just to confuse the drivers behind xD
I also prefer amber turn signals.
Yes to yellow turn signals and no to red[a hazard to drivers behind]. Thanks for your detailed and unbiased reviews.
I loved your review of the S90, and ended up buying it. Am looking forward to eventually downsizing to this S60 (or maybe V60). Nice review of the S60 Alex!
Bravo to Volvo for committing to a hgh-quality, fixed-rate damper in the sport model instead of an adjustable setup. The benefit of fixed-rate, high-quality dampers is sorely underrated amongst most consumers. A good shock, made to a high quality, will perform excellently in many situations AND last a long time AND have less things to fail than an adjustable damper.
And cheaper to replace except not in this case because they're going to be such low production.
Alex always provides great reviews, love him y ese 📦 suyo
Strong amber turn signal preference here. To the point where if I were ever to purchase a vehicle without them, I'd even consider replacing them with an aftermarket kit
Alex you are the best when it comes to cars
Best looking sedan on the market!
By far the best looking car in its segment.
This thing is BEAUTIFUL. I think Volvo has finally beat the Germans, at least they definitely beat BMW and Audi.
Idk about that. Have you seen the new 3series?
@@MrApplesaucestuff To be honest, the S60 redesign is better than the 3 Series redesign in my opinion. The 3 Series will most likely handle a lot better, but for style and probably feature content I think Volvo has done fabulously.
Yep. Volvo is top of the game for style and content. They just need to bring back a true sports version. Wondering when the 367hp 2.0L “T6” engine will come to the SPA models.
@@EDHBlvd completely agree... And waiting for that!!!
Volvo has stepped up their game in regards to luxury but they are not up to par with BMW and Audi on the following 3 points:
-Touchscreen is horribly integrated and they've removed all the buttons in the Volvo (what the hell where they thinking??)
-Reliability, old Inline 5 engine was bulletproof and sounded good, the new 4 banger is just over engineered and boring.
-Lack of manual transmissions in their lineup.
The new factory is right by where I live, hopefully more of these will be driven around here they look beautiful
I like this presenter, concise and easy to understand.
Alex, Excellent review!! I like how you covered the different engine variations and polestar model. According to Volvo, manual steering column adjustment only because if one has an accident, an electric adjust. steering wheel could possibly jam and cause the driver to not be able exit the vehicle.
Great review!
Great review 👍👍
I have 2014 year model of S60 and I am considering changing to 2019. Thanks for a look on this car.
Great review.
All my past Volvos, my 1988 740 GLE, 1989 760 Turbo, 2000 S70. T5, all had the rear amber turn signals. Therefore I prefer the amber color for the rear turn signal lights.
Yay! waht an intersetign car! Thanks for telling me all about it, Alex!
I have been looking forward to this video, thanks Alex!! I prefer Red turn signal in the rear. People should remember that there is a Center High Mounted Stop Lamp by the rear windshield, so the car behind can't be confused if your car is breaking or turning. To me, the red lamp without amber just gives it a little more feeling of heritage as it does on the Cadillac and Mustang.
I also prefer not to have the amber reflector in the head lamp assembly. I found out that the S60 they will produce for the European market (out of S Carolina) is without the amber front reflector and it looks much more edgy and cooler.
I am a current Lexus ES 350 owner, and the new S60 definitely gets my attention.
Great video! Love the new S60,
Yes I personally prefer red taillights. And S60 is the best looking modern Volvo, very thought out design. 3 series looks like '13 IS300 now. Great review A!
What a nice looking Car. 👍🏼
Wow that seatbelt joke was hilarious, you are always so professional; nice to see you joking lol.
Absolutely beautiful.
As always, great great video Alex! Your auto reviews are so detailed and are exactly what prospective buyers are looking for: a balanced perspective on exterior looks, interior feel, driving, and describing the overall features. I’ve been waiting for this new S60 re-design to come out. My 2016 S60 lease comes up in a couple of months, and I am considering this in its R-Design trim against the Genesis G70 and Audi A4 as my next car. Need to drive them all, since I hear these new Volvos are very different from the older ones. Compared to the rest of the class/the cars I posted, how would you rank the quality of the materials used in the R-Design? I hear the new SPA Volvos are great with material use, but some say they are either at par or below par with the competition. As always, thank you for your amazing content!
Glad they went full LED or almost full, not sure about the reverse lights. They should’ve don’t the same on the S90. I love the crisp & clean look of LEDs front & rear, directional if available but I can’t stand red turn signals. No clue who told them that but they need to stop it immediately & I wish the US would allow us to get the cool looking directional indicators like other markets get.
Beautiful car, stands way out among all those new cars
I like clean look of the red taillights and goes with more paint colors.
I prefer amber turn signals. I will not buy a car with all red signals. Red means stop and that is all I want it used for. I love Volvos. I wish they would bring back the S40.
Every product ranging from SUVs, crossovers and cars from Volvo are just stunning. Volvo reminds me alot of SAAB both of these car makers always made unique looking cars. Its too bad SAAB is no longer around, if they were still in existence I am sure they would of had some great looking vehicles as well.
Why does he turn on only the right indicator in his videos.....? I've only realised that only know been watching since a few years already... Great videos
What the reviewer didn’t mention is that the T8 versions will be available with a Polestar package that basically makes them identical to the Polestar engineered cars, but you will be able to buy them. There will also be a full on Polestar that you will be able to buy as well further down the line with 500hp!!
He does at 5:40? Though it does not really resemble the S60R of the past so it was not a very long segment of the video.
You can change a diode lamp in turn signal to make it Amber through red glass, I did that on my RDX as in Russia we all have to get only yellow/Amber turn lights.
I'm patiently waiting for the S60 T8 R-design.
Thank you! This review is great. I noticed in this review you are mostly focused on T6 AWD. Most people would probably go for the $4500 cheaper T5 FWD, especially taking durability and maitenance cost of AWD into consideration. Could you update some driving experience, especially the difference between the T5 FWD and T6 AWD of S60?
I prefer amber turn signals because they’re much easier to notice and see. Sometimes you can mistake turn signals for brake lights or not notice them at all in certain lighting conditions
Awesome car and awesome review!
This is the Volvo to buy! Just the perfect size and proportion.
I am looking forward to upgrade my 2016 S60 to the new one in 2020/1. Due to customer service in South Africa, I felt I was done with Volvo. But after optimising the vehicle with Polestar one week ago and seeing this new model, I am absolutely in love again and am no longer looking forward to get a Mercedes!
Beautiful car
Amber all the way. Red turn signals are confusing. Often they look like the brake lights and what’s worse is on older trucks, the brake light *is* the turn signal and it even blinks the third brake light just to be more confusing
Beautiful car inside and out
Remember back in the day, for 300hp, Volvo used to have a transversely mounted inline 6?
I gotta get yellow belts. Been looking a long time for a cheap way to get an extra ~15hp.... ;)
Red turn signal work better considering the design. When the light flickers, it's obvious that you're indicating, so there is no confusion there
Amber is the color of your energy!
I really like this redesign.
I hope one day I can own one of these Volvos.
They finally changed the generation since 2011!!!!!!
This car is divine.
From the side it looks like the BMW 3 series sedan... Also the XC40 I think it is called, Volvo copied the BMW X3 also.. I had multiple Volvos, but when I got my first BMW I was stunned how amazing cars they make!
The turn signal color does not matter ....blinking lights are the means. And the terrific style of this machine make me salivate.
I love the design of this and the size is perfect for me! the T8 would make gas free commuting a reality but a tubocharged, supercharged plug in hybrid? Yeaaah I'll definitely be leasing this one not buying.
Shirley Clamp on the stereo. Good Swedish singer.
Always a fan of Shirley, but then I also love Melodifestivalen, soo....
I hate red turn signals. Just bought an '18 V90 T6 R-Design wagon and installed European tail lights to get amber turn signals in the rear. Way more visible. Volvo has always promoted safety...I think this has been a bad move on their part since the SPA architecture cars came out. Why make two parts for US and "other" markets?
Paul Hughes US law
@@SvenTheSveed Amber rear turn signals are completely legal in the U.S. Automakers just choose to use red because customers think it looks better.
Not really, as Automakers from certain regions of the world, it is US Law that they manufacture cars with Red signal lights for use in the USA, it's not illegal to use Amber, however manufacturers are just following laws they're given, no one would think it looks better. As seen even in this comment section.
My 2018 XC60 R design T8 is fast enough 4.2 seconds 0 - 100 kph not bad at all...
Im still waiting for that new 2019 V60.
I like both amber signal lights and red turn signal lights. I really dislike tail lights that use the same red lighting elements to brake and indicate a turn though. The worst instance I can think of off the top of my head is an early 2000s Cadillac Deville. The brake and signal lights are one in the same, and it's the whole lamp. Bad.
Love this S60 though. Such beautiful lines and shapes throughout. Can't wait for the new V60 too.
I totally agree. I noticed that on the 19 Toyota Avalon.
That is one good looking sedan... not one angle inside or out looks bad.
Can I get the V60 in this orange color?! It's so beautiful.
Not really sure how I feel about having the start/stop engine button in the center console though.
Always been a fan of Amber turn signals, they are way safer than the red ones.
Alex, have you driven the V60 yet? Impressed by this S60 except for the slow infotainment, and I assume the wagon also drives similar, specifically the T6 versions. If yes, what would you go for?
I’ve always been a fan of the original XC90, the quirky C30. Didn’t car for much else at Volvo though.
This new generation of cars however have won me over. Volvo’s entire lineup is very attractive, we’ll build, and generously equipped for thousands less than their German competitors (and Lexus).
I absolutely love the styling. However, I'm a curious about long term reliability with their complicated engines.
I just sold my S90 that had just shy of 80k on the clock (MY '18). There was nothing mechanically wrong that occurred with that vehicle, and I took it to quite a few places and some snow plenty snow covered trails in Colorado Springs. FWIW, the trail in the Springs seemed only accessible to the local stump jumpers in their wranglers and 4WD trucks. I received quite a few stares rolling up to the trailhead in my S90 (with my Husky in tow, no less). On our way back out from the trail driving to the main roads we saw a couple Jeep Cherokees (not proper jeeps, I know), stranded on the side of the road as they kept slipping during some uphills on the road to access the trail. I know the AWD system in the Volvo uses a Haldex type system and it also is dependent upon tire choice. However, I'm currently shopping for a car for my wife and myself. While she's going with either a GLC 300 4Matic or a X3 xDrive, I find myself leaning towards an S60 Inscription T6 (with those fantastic seats found in the S90) because what I didn't like about the S90, the S60 resolves with being smaller and definitely more nimble. It's comfortably responsive without being overly subdued, which is what I want. I've been a tuner when I was younger and I very much prefer the ride of the S60 over equivalent A4, (whereas the BMW 3/5 series are particularly compelling in terms of driving feel), as I think the A4 tends to feel a bit chintzy in it's dynamic setting. My ideal S60 would be a T6 R-Design with the Inscription Ventilated seats. But, it looks like I'll simply have to *settle* for the T6 Inscription, which is a compromise I'm more than willing to make.
Simply stated, this car is completely worth it. I followed the recommended manufacturer maintenance schedule and I had zero issues with reliability up to about 80k on the odometer. Disclaimer, my S90 was not a hybrid, just the T6, so can't speak on the PHEV.
I don’t personally know anyone who prefers amber over red turn signals. Actually, red overlays are pretty popular for cars that come factory with amber turn signals.
Absolutely, amber.
Dear oh Dear! A Volvo manufactured in the USA. Let’s hope Volvo are keeping an eye on quality.
The previous S60 backseat was extremely small besides the inscription, good thing the standard version for this is bigger.
Ness Rosenbrad ya the inscription was actually a longer wheelbase version on the old model. It was basically an S60L.
How don't you see red turn signals? I'm from Europe and I love that here in the USA some vehicles have red turn signals...
That's so funny while driving back home I was taking to myself on how most American cars have red turn signal as I was looking at non American cars with amber turn signals. I honestly prefer amber turn signals
It's unfortunate to see that Volvo reduced the tow rating of these new S60/V60 models down to 2000 lbs. With Saab folding several years ago, Volvo was the last manufacturer to still engineer significant towing capacity in their regular passenger cars (everyone else forces you into their truck or SUV line-up for that capability nowadays). Fortunately, I believe the larger S90 still has a tow rating substantial enough to allow for pulling a fiberglass boat or small camper.
Yes I love the focus on real utility in Swedish cars and I'd hate for it to be a thing of the past.
I prefer the amber myself
Looks better plus it should be the same color as the side mirrors amber signal markers
What color is that orangish model considered? Looking on Volvo's configuration website, the only one close is the Fusion Red, but not sure this is that color.
Doors aren't leather? My '06 s60 are leather front and back. :D
Volvos just have a perfect level of luxury, features, design and quality, all for a great value.
Weight is definitely one thing Volvo could do to shed.
I like the Swedish flag touch. I'm Finnish by blood! Nordic.
V60 T8 is definitely on my radar! Though I wished the Polestar version wasn't only via subscription. I won't be in the car market until early 2020 so I have time!
John Vo There will be a Polestar package available for the T8 that basically makes it the engineered car but you will be able to buy it
@@sva60_cyyz59 Alex mentioned @25:00 that it was only available from the Care by Volvo program which I believe is their subscription program. Also you can't choose your own options in that program as well sadly.
I like amber turn signals
The Swede in me says must drive.....😍
In regards to the turn signals I prefer an Acura TLX or RLX, or Lexus IS or GS.
The apex of design at Volvo is the 2015 V60.
Yes the 5 wagon lovers will have an option.
