    Hahah, cool. I sold my old Andromeda because it didn't have enough midrange and treble was just a bit too hot for me. So then I might think of repurchasing the 2020 version again, because that's exactly what i'd like to hear. Thanks man!

    • @TheHEADPHONEShow
      @TheHEADPHONEShow  Před 4 lety +14

      I think you might be considering the fact that less expensive IEMs also use multiple drivers (or there are other hybrids out there). And so the question ends up being "what makes these hybrid IEMs or multi-BA IEMs better?". The bottom line is that not all drivers are A) made the same, and B) implemented in the same way. There's a lot that goes into this, everything from a materials perspective (the physical thing that moves to produce sound) to the way crossover is handled, to the design of the spout and so on. From a sound perspective, these do a much better job of detail retrieval and image clarity. The closest Chi-Fi to these might be something like the Moondrop Blessing 2 (which is possibly the best value IEM I've yet heard).

    Sounds like they're leaning even more into the 600/650 comparison they always get with the Andros. Did they change anything with the impedance/sensitivity? Their biggest drawback for me is how finicky they are with sources. They sound wildly different on so many things that the juice didn't seem worth the squeeze to dial in the "ideal" sound (going so far as an iFi iEMatch to fix as I've heard many recommend.)

    • @jeffrockwell5869
      @jeffrockwell5869 Před 4 lety +7

      Solaris: Less v-shaped; more coherent across the FR; more presence in the mid-range, particularly lower mids; tighter, more controlled bass with touch of the "BA timbre"; better layering and separation of sounds
      Z1R: More v-shaped, a little more bass impact, pure unalloyed delicious DD bass, though a bit "mushy", probably more extended up top, more upper mid presence, but recessed lower mids, a little disjointed between the highs and lows
      In terms of things like detail, imaging and soundstage it's a bit of a wash.
      As someone who has owned both I think it's misleading to suggest that one is objectively better than the other-- they each have strengths in areas the other lacks and whichever of the two is preferable will depend on the tastes, sensitivities and listening preferences of the individual. I would say this same thing about certain other top tier IEMs (like the u12t)-- they all have their own strengths & character and individual preferences are the biggest factor in determining what is best.

I too myself own the OG Solaris but I never had the chance to audition the Z1R and will probably never will. I was intrigued by the Z1R and still am quite curious as to why there are so many reviews and comparisons of the Solaris to practically everything that is out there (especially BA + DD hybrids) BUT not many comparisons of the Z1R to other TOTL IEMs, especially by the well known reviewers. I own (and love) both the Solaris (SE variant) and the Legend X. A lot of it comes down to your tolerance for bass. As some have said bass is.like spice level in food-- we all have our comfort zones. What is "too much" for some won't be enough for others. It's true that the low end on the Legend is too much at times but I've found that for certain genres (hip hop, modern pop, live funk & jazz) it's tuned just right...so if much of your listening falls in those genres then you may want to seriously consider it.
