- Hello :) This is the requested transcription I've done of the Steely Dan song "Kid Charlemagne" from their 1976 album "The Royal Scam". The bass player on this track was Chuck Rainey.
You can find this transcription and the play-along at Muzento when you sign up with an Advanced Lesson Plan.
I really, really enjoyed working on this track! Chuck Rainey is a master of rhythm and I think he really shows it in this song. His playing sounds effortless as he weaves in and around the melody and chords.
The thing I tried to remember in this one is its a "jazz/pop tune". Keep it light and try to make it danceable.
It makes for an excellent bass study and play-along. You can find that here - • Kid Charlemagne - Stee...
Don't forget to "like" and "subscribe" and thanks for watching :)

Awesome! Rainey, like Jamerson, has away of finding just the right rhythmic and melodic variation to really make a song groove and not sound repititious yet still sound familiar.
Agree 100%. Nice description ;)
VERY tough song to cover.. I could sit here and critique it, but in reality, this song is about improvisation. I don't thing it flows like Rainey on the studio track, but its still a great cover and it still sounded great. And that's what it is about. Sometimes I try to hard to get Dan covers note for note, when I should really just be trying to keep the soul and feel of the song.
exactly man, but these lines are so good it feels like an injustice not to learn them note for note
"I could sit here and critique it...". I love when a musician can't resist putting in his 2 cents and paints that sweet picture of 'very good' how you played it, but still didn't do it good enough, yet flaunting the, "but who am I to say" attitude. 😊
@@michaelnicholas2417 What are you going on about? You sound like you eat a lot of soy.. Feel free to keep projecting onto me your own delusions.. Its nowhere near that deep bud, I can assure you. To clarify, the reason I said that(2 years ago now), was because in the bass community, there was a lot of discussion about playing this song note for note in the past, and I was more talking about how its great they did an improvised version, and how that is a good thing, rather than trying to play it note for note and have it critiqued like so many have done in past covers. I think thats what Chuck would feel as well. Just play it improvised and how you feel, rather than being so caught up on playing it note for note. Sorry I had to burst your bubble and negativity. It sadly wasnt as controversial and negative as you thought lol... Cheers.
Talk about a busy bassline, incredible it's why we love Steely Dan so much.
haha...yes it is :)
I've always loved the effortlessly classy way that The Dan infuse that reggae vibe in their music. It's about what you DON'T play. You truly did them proud. ❤🎶
Thank you very much...I appreciate it :)
This is so well played ! Incredible…
Thank you very much :)
Is there gas in the car.
Yes there's gas in the car.
Nicely done 🤙
thank you :)
Damn that perfect harmony at the end this is a crazy bassline to learn jeez.
It's a great line Mr. Rainey came up with. Have fun with it! :)
Songs like this are the reason I'm subscribed
cool...I'll try to keep doing more like this then :)
This, as well as Jamerson's bass line for Stevie Wonder's For Once in My Life are among my all time favourites. Such amazing groove! I understand that Rainey creditied half of his playing on this song to Jamerson.
I didn't know that. Thanks!
Fantastic!!
Funky yet smooth bass requires SPACE and some staccato with intertwining legato notes.
Well done!!
Thank you very much. Mr Rainey is a master of the instrument.
Chuck Rainey.....just incredible in the pocket playing.....
Thanks very much. This was a real pleasure to transcribe, practice and play. Thanks :)
Tremendous cover. Nailed it.
Thanks very much :)
Thanks for tabbing this and very well played. I love Steely Dan, there’s so much to their compositions and everything is very well considered. I’ve only been playing 18 months so this is a little beyond me atm but gives me something to aspire to.
I like your attitude. Keep practicing and thank you :)
Yeahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha! :)
OUTSTANDING!!! Great transcription and performance. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Isn't it great how they make these changes sound so natural? :)
My pleasure. I'm really glad you liked it...thank you :)
Chuck always played tasty lines. Can't wait to tackle this one. Fantastic job Greg!
Very tasty! Thanks Midas...enjoy :)
I never realized the bit @3:02 was part of the bass line. Good job.
Thanks, that part drove me crazy :)
Wow. I’m a huge Dan fan. Have been since 74’. Just awesome. Well done. Well done. Gives me something to aspire too. I’m in the middle of learning another Chuck Rainey line “Don’t Take Me Alive”. Got the first two minutes close. The way you did this video too. The production. The juxtaposition of the tab with the visual of the left and right hand. Just so well done. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome and thank you too :) I'm not familiar with that Chuck tune, but I'm sure it's pretty cool ;) Good luck and thanks again!
Agreed Keep!
Came to CZcams a year or two ago looking for a decent cover for this song because, well, it's a tough one to learn by ear and found nothing even worth looking. Just out of curiosity (albeit with barely any hope at all), I searched again today and I saw your video. Having already known your channel for a while now, I instantly knew it would be a quality work. And as always, you didn't disappoint. Surreal job, you just made my day.
cool :) That's a nice comment. I hope you enjoy it...cheers!
Mind boggling
It's a crazy bass line he came up with...thanks!
Spectacular job! Thanks for posting this.
Hi Alex, thank you very much...you're welcome :)

Man, this is awesome, it's all freakin there, every damn note, thank you...again.
Hey Roger, my pleasure. I really enjoyed doing this one. I'm glad you like it...thank you :)
God only knows how much time you put into these, it's greatly appreciated! Great playing too
Thanks very much :) This one took just over 18 hours over 8 days.
Thank you so much, that performance of yours is amazing.
Thank you very much Norberto...I really enjoyed this one :)
Very nice, & tasty tone too! Chuck Rainey abides....

This is one of the deepest pockets ever; awesome rendition man.
hey Chad, ya man, the groove they came up with..."deep". I like that :) Thanks!
One of the best, well done.
hey Offchili...thank you very much!

Fabulous. We got a request to learn this song and your wonderful transcription makes it EZ
glad it helped...thanks! :)
Just wonderful Greg!
Hey Dennis...thanks man :)
Just Subscribed because of this song. Fantastic job!
Hey Sandi...thanks for the sub and comment! :)
Wow Greg, you did it again! I really enjoy every new video. Not just
because of what I learn. I'm discovering other styles of music that I've
never really paid attention to and it's really interesting.
Hey Juan, that's cool! I like your eagerness to learn and be open to new music...thank you! :)
I've been playing live and working this tune for years. The subtleties of Rainey's timing and groove, where he pauses or pushes, his touch, the ghost notes, etc etc ETC... are 2nd to NONE! I always learn from this tune. Thank you Greg...best bass cover of this ever!
Hey Robert, thank you very much. There's a ton to learn from a song like this. Chuck is definitely a master. Thanks :)
Amazing
Thank you Emilio...cheers!
All the ways I tried to figure this bass part out, I have 3 days. Thank You Greg you saved my butt!!! Between the video and the transcript . . . WoW!
Hey Rennie...no problem :) Have a good gig...thanks!
How have I missed this channel?!? Subbed :)

me too! Thanks :)
Awesome stuff!
Thanks Terry...cheers!
Very cool!
Thanks a lot!
Amazing.
Thank you :)
Great playing and the whole tab notation and hands view package is just what I needed.
Rainey and Purdie took an already great band to a whole new level. ( I've been a Dan fan since '72.}
Interesting to see the earlier comment about "no slapping" on Dan sessions; Chuck managed to sneak a little in but it's subtle and adds a nice touch.
Thanks a bunch and keep up the great work.
Hi Chris, thank you very much. It's amazing what a drummer and bass player can do to a band eh? :) I remember seeing that interview of Chuck where he said he snuck in the slapping parts. Funny :) Thanks!
Nice Job!
Thanks!
Man, I am all in with Ruck, this is swingin' man!
thanks man :)
Very nice😎!
Hey Clarke, thanks man :) I really liked learning this one!
Thank You!

Wow!! Amazing job Greg!!! Sounds so good..thank you for your hard work..have a great day.. (oh did I mention I want that bass???).. LOL..!!😂😂
Hey Drew, thanks man. This one was a pleasure to do...no work involved :) And no, you've never mentioned that before ;)
Love the chart helped a lot SOLO
cool...I'm glad it helped. Thanks!
CHUCK RAINY IS BEAST
he sure is!
Finally an accurate version. I just wish the first slap part wasn't divided between two pages with a hard to decipher merge going on.
hey Dave, thanks! Page-turns, oh man, I used to have nightmares about page turns :) I would actually plan and practice page turns!
Oh man you great!!
haha...thanks Rigoberto :)
Nothing but praise
Thanks Ice...cheers! :)
Nice
thanks :)
thanks man
My pleasure....thank you!
Nice 😍
Thanks 🤗
In my top 10 songs list.
I think it made it to mine too ;)
Wow! Just awesome❣️ I wanted to hear the exact way Chuck played, so I really appreciated this. Thank you.
Long time ago, I contacted Chuck Rainey to ask if it's possible to get a transcription of this piece. He was so kind and helped me get what I wanted.
I never forget how thrilled I was when I got such a humble nice reply from him.
Hi Shiba, thanks for the comment. That's really cool that Chuck got back to you. Did he send you a transcription?
Hi Greg,
Chuck told me that this gentleman (Mr. Anthony Vitti) at Beeklee College of Music should be able to help me, if not, he's see what he could do.
I contacted Mr. Vitti who was also very kind and helpful, and gave me his hand written transcription!
Chuck also responded to my other question in a very friendly and humble way. I loved him even more after that! This is nearly 20 years ago.
I only discovered your channel yesterday, I'm looking forward to checking more of your videos💕
All this kind of music is new for me, but this song and the incredible bassline makes me come back to hear it again and again. Is absolutely brilliant. A great discover.
hey Juan, that's really cool how passionate and open you are to discovering new music. So glad you found this one...a great tune and line!
Love your videos. Brilliant playing and great notation. What about a transcription of the bass line of Vibrator by Terence Trent D’arby?
Thank you Jørn :) I like TTD, I'll definitely check it out...thanks!
Just found your channel, and looking forward to digging in.
Great job!
Wonder if it’s being played by memory or while sight reading?
Hey Paul, thanks!
I'm definitely reading this...(that's part of the reason for the channel...the accurate transcription) ;) But once you play something enough times it starts to become a muscle memory and the sheets are kind of there just to remind you and keep your place in the arrangement. But that memory is a little different from that of just playing something from memory. I'd have a heart attack if I was expected to play this note for note from memory...haha, yikes :) It would take a lot of work...a lot of work! Thanks :)
Love this greg. I recommend a song called “Shape I’m In” by Joe Joe Zep and the Falcons very funky/reggae would be fun to see you transcribe it.
hey Jack, thanks...I'll check it out
🔥
thanks :)
❤
Thank you :)
Jeeeeeeeeeezzzz
OMG
Can you make cover for Let me love you-Teddy swims and Little L-Jamiroquai?
I'll check them out...thanks
This fucking awesome!!!
haha...thanks!
Could you do a playthrough of America's version of "Muskrat Love"?
I don't know? I'll check it out :)
Greg, can you do "The Streetbeater" aka Sanford and Son theme song-another great Chuck Rainey line? Quincy Jones..
Hi Michael, I've had a request for this before. It's a great track, but it has some overdubbed parts on it that I'm not sure how to do in a video? Thanks :)
GAH DAM🗣️🗣️🗣️
thanks
Hi Greg,
The Bass lines are always so complicated with this singer. I'll try this week end but its seems difficult. Thanks
hehe...yup, you might need to practice :)
Nice work, thanks! Do you have a printable sheet for this?
Thanks very much. You can find how to get it in the description...thanks!
Please do lyin eyes by the Eagles!! I can’t find a tutorial anywhere
Eagles songs get blocked...sorry
top
thank you zdravko!
Great job! How about Thin Lizzy Still in love with you live?
Hi Donna, thanks...I'll check it out :)
Could you do ”does it really happen” by Yes
cool tune, I'll have to add it to the maybe list as I've got some "paid supporter" obligations ;) Thanks!
@@BassCovers ok awesome!
Is there a way to get the tablature on its own instead of flowing along in the header?
Please check out the description in each of my videos. You'll see how you can get a PDF. Thanks!
@@BassCovers OK, did it. Thanks for responding.
It's the original bass of the song or are you improvising?
Original bass line
@@BassCovers good! I really like Steely Dan music and some days ago i was thinking play this bass line, you help me a lot. Keep doing Steely Dan bass cover!
Nice ! how do I get this tab?
Please check in the description.
I want to slow it down.
Turn up the bass volume.
check it now
lotta Carol Kay jumping off there
ya think so?
How the hell did you figure out the notes??
haha, slowing it down and playing it over and over (knowing the chords helps too ;)
@@BassCovers i always hope people tell me the ultimate technique that makes everything transcription easier, but it always comes down to work.
ps good video! thanks a lot!
This is so sick you should be in the hospital. 👍🏻 excellent job.
haha...good one...thanks :)
Steely Dan didn't want slap bass on their songs. Chuck would sneek some in occasionally like here and on Peg.
hehe...ya, I remember seeing that on Classic Albums. I love to hear little stories like that about the recording process. Thanks!
Well played Greg. I hope you are well.
Thank you :) I hope the same for you.
