Dame Carol Ann Duffy DBE FRSL HonFBA HonFRSE is a poet and playwright. She is a professor of contemporary poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and was appointed Poet Laureate in May 2009, resigning in 2019. She was the first female poet, the first Scottish-born poet, and the first openly lesbian poet to hold the Poet Laureate position.
I'm not the first or the last
to stand on a hillock,
watching the man she married
prove to the world
he's a total, utter, absolute, Grade A pillock.
Mrs. Icarus highlights the speaker's feelings of frustration and helplessness as they observe their spouse's foolish actions, leading them to resort to humorous and exaggerated language to express their exasperation.
