    Great Channel - found you when looking for a Behringer Ultrapatch review and got so much more :) As you're about a year ahead of me, I'll definitely be popping back for PreAmps and other goodies...

      High Richard! Thanks for the comment. Yes the Preamp stuff definitely takes you further down the rabbit hole, but so far it has been awesome diving into them. If you ever need any advice on where to start let me know.

    That’s great that you have a second one! I’m hoping to get one for m/s and then another for Blumlein, myself. I understand from reading the bumblebee pro web site that if you plan to buy two for Blumlein, but not at the same time, they will note the transformer characteristics to try to match them the best they can. I’m excited to hear your Blumlein trials. Take care and stay well, I’m glad I came across your channel to learn about these exciting mics. Please tell us about what kind of pre-amps you are using as well. The guys at Vintage King Audio recommended to me the AEA dual pre-amp that’s made for ribbons but I’ve seen the Grace pre-amps used too. I think, but don’t know, that we need these 75 dB preamps or a regular interface 60dB pre-amp and a 25dB Soyuz Launcher or CL-1 cloud lifter or some kind of booster to get the gain up.

      They are very lovely to record with. The results I've had so far with blumlein are very nice.
      I'm currently using 2x neve 1073 style pres that I built from sound skulptor. Any pre with plenty of gain will do and you won't need a cloud lifter unless your preamp has less. I'm actually about to build a 2nd tube mic pre and I'll be excited to hear the result from the tube pre and ribbon mic combo. Should be nice.

      The DIY Recording Studio that’s terrific - I now want to build a couple of tube pre-amps. I didn’t know about sound skulptor. I’m learning a lot from you and your channel.

      @@larryatha3221 there's a lot of diy stuff out there. Sound Skulptor are great. So are CAPI. Theres heaps of others too.

    Just built one and this video was helpful. It seems like there’s a fair bit of hiss though... would that be likely a mess up on my part? I’m using a Soyuz Launcher with the Apollo Twin so I don’t think the preamp gain is the issue

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  Před 3 lety

      Congrats on finishing one. You shouldn't hear any hiss though. How high do you have the preamp gain cranked? Do you have phantom power on for your gain booster/cloud lifter?

    • @easternsouvenirs
      @easternsouvenirs Před 3 lety

      @@diyrecordingstudio Thanks! Fun project. I do have phantom power on to power the gain booster. My preamp gain is at about 35db. I also tried with my outboard preamp (Heritage Audio HA-73)--pretty much the same level of noise. It's not enough hiss to make the tracks unusable but noticeable after EQ and Compression

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  Před 3 lety

      @@easternsouvenirs That's interesting, the HA-73 should easily give it enough gain on it's own, without a booster, if you're capturing a sound source that isn't too quiet.
      What are you recording?
      The hiss might be coming from your interface, it's power supply, or the phantom power itself. Maybe try it without the gain booster?

    • @brianfisher3907
      @brianfisher3907 Před 3 lety +1

      @@diyrecordingstudio I went ahead and removed the gain booster and went straight into the HA-73 with Hi z and it instantly sounded way more clear and way lower noise floor!

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  Před 3 lety

      @@brianfisher3907 thats interesting. So the soyuz launcher was the issue?
      Either way, im glad you foubd a solution.

    Hi! I'm thinking of building my own ribbon microphone. Unfortunately, transformers and foil are hard to come by in my country.
    Can I use "metal leaf" or "gold leaf" to replace a micron foil? Also, can I use a 8:1300 ratio transformer or an SM57/SM58 transformer since these are the most common in my country?

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  Před 3 lety

      I wouldn't alter the foil or transformers as these are vital to the sound. Ribbon foil needs to be corrugated so leaf won't work. You can get foil for very cheap online.
      As for transformers, the ratio of the sm57 transformer is way too high. There's more info here www.bumblebeepro.com/ribbon-microphone/ribbon-mic-transformer-guide/
      But the ratio should be more 1:25 - 1:40 or so.

      Another dude on on the internet who wants to be negative. Great.
      Hakon.... buddy, this is a build video of the ribbon mic. There are audio examples on a bunch of other videos I have made on this channel.
      Instead of jumping straight into writing a negative comment, you could have used some of that keyboard warrior rage energy to instead have a quick look for them. They're very obvious. They have pretty pictures of ribbon mics on them.
