They're actually manufactured in France, even though it's a British company.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I don't really see a difference between Winton and Artist's Oil Paints though.

Great story! You lucked out with getting those Winsor & Newton paints on sale. :) I can't recommend Grumbacher... years ago they used to be good, but not anymore.

Thank you. By the way, I haven't use Grumbacher for years, but I noticed that they have an academic line and a artist's line. The artist's line is supposed to be for professionals. Have you used it? If so, what is your feedback?

I haven't used Grumbacher for years either! If you are talking about the "Pre-Tested" line as their artists grade, it is not what it used to be. From what I understand, Grumbacher was sold in 2006 to the ChartPak corporation that just ran the quality into the ground (typical "profit first" thinking). I had some color charts of Grumbacher Pre tested colors I made in 2011 that all developed a whitish "bloom" on the surface after they dried. It couldn't be removed. I think it was the cheap fillers rising to the surface of the paint. Plus, several of them yellowed quite badly. My current favorite brands that I use are Michael Harding, Gamblin and Rublev. Winsor & Newton is great too! I also use them as well.

Haha, I bought like 6 Winsor and Newton oil colours for like 15 dollars at hobby lobby because nobody buys them I guess and they were just trying to get rid of them. I got really good colours to-quinacrodine magenta, burner sienna, permanent green, and some others that I never ended up using all that much. Anyways, I like Winsor and Newton, but I definitely prefer Gamblin. Better quality pigments and higher pigment load

Would you recommend their griffin alkyds line?

Nice story but you should review the product, I learnt nothing about the consistency, drying time, range of colours, or difference between this brand and something like gamblin.

do they go farther than acryclics? meaning if you were paintig the same subject in both mediums, would you use more or less of the oil vs acrylic?

dcsanders92 It matters how much medium you add to the paint. I think overall they’re about the same, but I wouldn’t worry about that.

I decided to make the switch from the W& N Winton to the artist grade - a little more than a few pennies...4 tubes set me back €81.00 ( Ultramarine, Cad red, Veridian, Burnt umber ) ...I have to say I'll be a little more conservative about spurting them out on the palette...I guess you loose that concern when you're making money from the paintings though - they pay for themselves.
