I hope you've found a way to help yourself. Art can be very cathartic and is a wonderful outlet. The brain gets used to thinking in certain ways and tends to stick to those ways. Read about neuroplasticity, it is the brains ability to make physiological changes which can be influenced via certain behavioral methods. Powerful stuff.

You'll find oils a lot easier to master than watercolour, just be prepared for the mess though, getting an apron is a good idea.

"Here's how to do oil painting, an easy tutorial for absolute beginners" *proceeds to paint a photorealistic eye*
If you cant draw an eye you probably have other things to learn before oil painting
Hahaha. 100%. What if I'm more into cubist crap? I just want to take a shit on top of a canvas and call it art really. Do I need to go through the 10,000 hour process? That doesn't sound very artistic to be honest. Real art is shit so fucking painful to go through, that it ruins your life. Unfortunately millionaires assign a multimillion dollar value to the ruin of the somebody's inner soul. They have literally monetized people's insanity.
This guy's content is good I must admit - he knows his shit. But the reason why he will never be Picasso, is because he has enough time in his hands to create a CZcams channel.
@@skunker666 I've seen many people who can't do an eye painting. Your reply makes no sense
@@Ronam0451 your reply makes zero sense. Drawing an eye isnt for skilled artists. It's something most artists learn to do. It doesnt even need to be photo realistic, just proportioned correctly. If you havent learned anatomy and art rules then you should try a different medium like regular drawing before oil painting

How wonderful it is to just strive to create something beautiful, not for money or recognition, all those millions of paintbrushes and the minds behind driving their creative goal.
im a disabled dude in wheelchair i thought of getting into oil painting, back when i was in art class in high school i did a few oil paintings,i even did a painting straight from my head,i won a ribbon at a art show for it,i still have that image of the painting in my head,i like to redo it,or i like to get into acrylic pour painting
My first attempt at oil painting was an abstract which I still have on my wall. I then went onto pour painting. But I gave up rather quickly. The mess was too much and the cost financially and too the environment was a major fact for me. That said I still do at times do the dip techniques as they have less waste and I prefer the look. Good luck sounds like you have some skills to start with, I didnt.
Go for it - painting makes us so happy & your paintings will inspire & bring joy to others - good luck!
How is it going? did you start painting again? :))

Osole Mio yes. thank you.
you have to force yourself into it. I got into acrylics a few years ago, forced into it ironically, after a leg injury left me being able to just about hobble around the house. Got so bored with the TV programs I remembered I had some paints in a drawer from many years before. My first attempts were a bit laughable but with time and effort I have kept at it. Play around with it, and you will learn. :)

Thais just made me develop a crush on oil painting! Years of acrylic painting has caused a love/hate relationship with it and it’s fast drying time made me struggle with blending colors. I was one of the people who felt that oil was too much work and materials. You’ve opened my eyes so thank you so much for this!
I great tip for new oil painters is to constantly move around the canvas. Don’t stay too long on one spot, because it’s incredibly ways to over-blend with oil. Oil is unique because it leaves a beautiful texture when done correctly, so moving around the canvas helps to be quicker and to not hyper focus too much. Always add smaller details towards the end.
Thanks a lot Mary Lee. I'll keep it in mind when I start. I'm EAGER!!!
Bro... I sat down to go to bed, saw this video in my feed and clicked. Saved it to my watch later playlist so I could watch it tomorrow and accidentally watched all 28 minutes just now... thank you
I started with linseed oil as a medium and soap + warm water to clean the brushes... and it works completely perfectly. So guys if you have doubts on what to use ... keep it simple (: but paint and paint and paint so you become better
I've been painting with oils, acrylics & watercolors for years - - I love them all but like advantage of oils staying wet - I often paint first with acrylics because it drys quickly and allows me to lay in a quicker background before painting the main subject in oils (like birds for example).
Hope I can improve my style in painting

Still and amazing video, thanks for the effort
Your right I went from oil to acrylic and I actually find acrylic much more hard and complicated to handle because of the quick drying time , oils are def much more forgiving!
Sebastian Tinajero i always thought i hated painting until i discovered oil painting a few years ago. acrylic paint is so weird and dries way too quick. oil painting made me realize i love painting even more than drawing
It's a personal thing. There are watercolor artists who work like it's oil. But that's skill.
I have tried all 3 mediums and it's not really that personal. If you google acrylic portaits and oil portraits, you'll notice that there are plenty of good oil's and not many acrylic's. Acrylic demands different techniques like scumbling or layered brushstrokes, and you might still not get as good a result. Maybe with an expensive medium.
Also watercolor is different from oil, it dries quickly, but there is the advantage that you can fade a color out with water, so it doesn't matter. You can blend it even after it's dry. You can't really do this with acrylic. Oil colours can just be blended into each other.
Acrylic isn't impossible and I think it's great for landscapes and bad for portraits.
Darn it, I'm really new to these 3 different paint types and I've been really getting into painting landscapes. Now I've noticed i might have a harder time now because i went and bought Acrylic paints thinking these would do fine while painting on a canvas. I now know they will dry faster. Looks like now I'll have to wait a little while longer to purchase some oil based paints.
Jamie Lange I would say oil over acrylic too but people like what they like. If you're getting what you want out of it use whatever you like.
Im getting insecure about starting painting with oil paint when I see his talent
Ive been acrylic painting for a few years. I just enrolled in an online art school and after watching this magical video I'm afraid I may be in over my head. Having a lot of doubts about this level of skill.
You seem like such a lovely, warm-hearted person. Thank you for this helpful video!
You are right, the way he talks and his facial movements indicate he is warm-hearted.
Aww he's cute and has warm eyes. Love how he's breaking everything down. Awesome

The complexity of set up and clean up is my favorite part of oil painting. It's this wonderful meditative process that prepares your mind for creation, once started you are committed to spend time and attention on your work.
One day I'll come back to thank You when I'll be able to paint with oil colors without being stressed about the solvent mediums.
Started from water color's and now moving towards oil colors.
I did my first oil painting for school, it looks awful, but you inspired me and I would like to try again!
everyone has to start somewhere. mine is the same as yours. the most frustrating part was mixing the right color on the subject. i had done a large mural 55' x 78' on John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in Jordan River. it took me two years to complete. there were so many redid to make the scene look alive. many painting i had seen in museums depict John pour water on top of Jesus' head with hyssop. it was a full submersion according to the KJV; sorry to say while on the mission trip to China, my church lost this painting. now i'm more than ever determined to do two oil paintings, one on same John the Baptist baptizing Jesus and the other Last Supper while the twelve disciples were reclining dining with Jesus on the night of his betray by Judas. the painting in Venice done by Michael Angelo showed them sitting, disciples should be reclining as scripture stated. let's hope i 'll get these two finished less than two years if the Lord tarry
Have the Disciples hanging out on La-Z-Boy recliners!

As you paint that eye, it’s like you are painting on all the memories from the person’s life. Wonderful.
I've watched many oil painting demonstrations on CZcams, but yours is one of the best, by far. It is really helpful to see how you prepared the paint, and your mixing, application, and blending techniques. Maybe I'll be able to overcome anxiety and actually start painting something now. Thank you for the comprehensive demonstration.
Getting started is the first challenge, the next one is going to be to know when to stop. Like many artists, you'll soon be cursed not knowing when you can call a painting finished but that's normal.
Thank you for your reply! I will try to paint something today. :)

My first and only painting medium was oil in college and my biggest challenge is building up the image. My former technique was once I got my sketch together I would put so much paint on the canvas and start blending lol you can imagine how much paint I used (and money I spent). Seeing you used so little amount of paint on your palette the whole time and the layering technique showed me something I would like to do with new paintings. This video was so helpful.
Thank you so much ! Indeed, I often say that controlling the quantity of pigment on your brush (and on your canvas of course) is the key to painting. It's a subtle balance but it comes with time.
Florent Farges - arts excellent advice
I feel like that's exactly what I'm doing lol
Can confirm 👍 . Oil Painting is easier than its misconceptions make it out to be.
I will only add one small piece of valuable information. When it comes to buying paint. Whether it is oil, acrylic, watercolor etc. Buy the highest quality paint you can.
The learning process will be smoother because the paint will handle and do what it is suppose to do. That's the most important benefit.
You are learning a new skill. You don't need the frustration of low quality paint being the reason preventing you from succeeding.
This was one of the first pieces of information my first teacher gave me. I have also tested other qualities when I understood how to handle paint effectively.
10 years of painting in acrylic. Just started using oil.
I've been trying to get back into painting. I wanted to do it right this time. I've been watching sooo many videos and this made more sense than all of the others combined. Not only do you show everything but give a clear demo. Thank you ❤
1:00 minute in and im already convinced lol
Have recently converted to oils from acrylic... I find that by using alkyds I can do my dry work the very next morning. Also, with these (alkyd) products, I’m painting in a similar way to acrylic and rarely worry about “fat over thin”. But, most importantly, I don’t have the frustration of seeing a much darker painting in the morning than the one I was looking at the night before, which was my frustration with acrylics! Another important advantage is being able to take my time when working wet-on-wet, the slower drying time makes blending so much easier and my paintings are much better (to my eye at least) for that. Have just subscribed to your channel, you have a very clear and concise way of teaching...much appreciated.
I have been desperately looking everywhere for how to prep my oils and you explained it wonderfully! Thank you so much! Beautiful work!

I always imagine oil painting the way you described it, it makes it complicated in my head lol. Thank you! You're a great teacher!
The way you explain and demonstrate is on point. Moving around the canvas makes it easier to be quicker and to avoid becoming overly hyper-focused. Oil is special because, when applied properly, it leaves a beautiful texture.

Your videos are so inspiring and helpful! I’m a fairly experienced artist using mostly watercolors, pen/ink, and gouache, and I’ve been scared to try oils. At almost 50 years old, I’m finally trying it out, and I think you for helping me understand that oils aren’t as toxic and terrifying as I always thought! ❤
A really informative video, thank you. I haven't painted or drawn for about 15 years, but started again In the last couple of weeks. There are many stages in the demonstration where I would have been happy to call it finished, but you really get a sense how you build up the final image through your video. Each process really adds something. Incredible. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent.

Thanks so much for the tutorial, you really pushed me over the line to give oils a go---I never tried them because, as you said, they were a tough medium for the old masters. It was helpful to follow along with your additive approach, thank you for showing how forgiving it is!
Thank you! I took oil painting as a major in college and now 32 years later I am finally having the time to get back into it! Appreciate your guidance very much! I’ve tried watercolor and acrylics, but they just don’t have the same flow.

Up until last year I hated painting I didn't feel I was good at it and just never had any inspiration to paint. I eventually started to come around to it but ive never been happy with my paintings as they always feel off. Recently I've been looking into what my art style is as it genuanlly fluctuates but I have found oil paintings seen to be what I'm drawn to about 95% of the time. I've only ever worked with acrylics as I've never been taught anything other than that in school nor since I started college, oil painting always seen to have more life and emotion so I'm hoping to try it and hopefully be motivated enougth to practice and get good at using oil paints so I can become more confident in my art!!! This video has really helped me have a better understanding of everything and now im even more excited to use oil paints in the future and hopefully use them for future college work instead of acrylics!!
