Sonic the Hedgehog fans have had quite a lot to look forward to over the past couple weeks due to the recent release of the first wave of Sonic Frontiers DLC, as well as the announcement of Sonic Origins Plus. Sonic's been seeing something of a renaissance lately, so it should come as no surprise that I'm here yet again to more or less completely squander the opportunity to talk about something topical and have instead opted to talk about Sonic 1 8-Bit.
The Sega Master System and Game Gear Sonic games have never had quite the same impact on the Sonic fanbase as their more successful Genesis/Mega Drive counterparts. I've always had a tendency to overlook the 8 bit titles: if I'm gonna play a 2D Sonic game, it'll typically be Mania or one of the Genesis games; I've never really had the urge to delve into the 8-bit games.
And I still don't. But I've got a CZcams channel to run, so I guess I'm playing one of them anyway.

im from brazil and i had one master system when i was a kid, they're actually cool. Sega made a partnership with Tectoy (brazilian company) so they could bring the console here but for some reason tectoy never stopped making master system and now we have official and cheap versions of this console with games in their memory selling to this day, which is a little funny

Master System was very popular in the UK as well. Sega did well in making bespoke Sonic versions for each system

11:34 The Game Gear games were removed from the Steam and Xbox 360 versions of Sonic Adventure DX. They can be reenabled in the Steam version with mods, but officially they are MIA in those versions.
Wow, I actually did not know this. I have BetterSADX installed but I always assumed the Game Gear games were in the base game, kind of bizarre they decided to remove them. Still though, great catch. Sorry I got that wrong

Oh my, remember playing this on the Wii, it's incredibly hard especially due to how easy you can die and the fact you have to restart after losing all your life's. I've only ever gotten to the final boss, then died just before I won 😭
What if in an alternate timeline, only six 8-Bit Sonic games existed? Which are: Sonic 1, Chaos, Triple Trouble, Drift's 1 & 2, and Sonic Gameworld(if Sega Pico never existed)?

Oh, and as a side note, there's this port to PC and android called the sonic 1 sms remake.
It adds tails, knuckles, Ray and mighty to the game as well as some extras.
The physics and controls have also been improved.
There's even a separate mode called remake that adds marble zone, spring yard, and starlight.
Super sonic has also been added.
And the chaos emeralds are in the special stages.

It's absolutely not. The original SMS game was a meticilously designed platformer: the remake is a good example of how remakes can break games.

4:40 I'm from Spain, but played in one of those an eternity ago in a retro gaming convention, they are basically sega master system consoles with games built on them.
And my master system has the cable in the controllers in the front, if I'm right only the American ones had the cable to the side

The music of Bridge Zone is awesome and is as memorable as some of the NES hits like Mario, Zelda, Megaman... The game is worth it just for this (at a decent price).

There's a fan remake of Sonic 1 and 2 8 bit that adds super sonic, level select, wide-screen, and quality of life changes. I highly recommend them!

I'm from Brazil and yes, they still sell the Master System here. A lot of my friends and even I had one as a kid, although when I ask them, most don't even know the name and say "the blue console that has Sonic in it"
to be honest people only remember 8 bit sonic 2 because they kill off tails if you don’t get the space pebbles

So many memories from the GG version on my 3DS as a kid... I remember I bought this instead of the Genesis version because I wanted to play Sonic's first ever game and I had the mindset of "It's 8-bit so that means it came out first.". Eventually I caught on and bought the Genesis version, but this was a fun one. Also, Sonic Triple Trouble. Underrated GEM right. there. Play the 16-bit fan remake.
I remember playing this version on rom websites, the Nintendo 3DS and Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the PS2 and Original Xbox.

Creative araya is making remakes for all the 8bit sonic games and they're doing a pretty good job at it.

This 8-bit rendition of marble’s music is actually so much better than the original
I'm European, and while Master System wasn't that successful in my country (it lost against a unofficial NES clone that ran pirate cartridges) and was released incredibly late (first model in 1992 and second in 1994), I managed to get the model II for a decent price. It had Sonic 1 built in and a normal controller with the cable coming from the top.
I have played and completed the entire SMS Sonic trilogy a few times and played it much more than any of the 16-bit games. (I have never completed a single Mega Drive game.)
Also, my first ever introduction to the Sonic franchise outside of fangames was Sonic Adventure DX and the emulated Game Gear games that come with it as extra content.
I got a Game Gear and Sonic 1, 2, Chaos and Triple Trouble for it on Christmas 2022.

I think it's really cool that they still officially sell master systems here in Brazil and most of them already come with 142 games (Or more) I still like to play Shinobi and Alex kid, and the control cable it no longer comes out to the right, but over the top and some come with a mega drive control

I'm brazilian, and i have a master system from tectoy, my grandma brought one, i remember staying awake like 00:00 PM playing alex kidd and sonic with her, good old times man.
And this master system is pretty damn cool! It has a lot of games on it, like golden axe, bonanza bros, all of the alex kidd games, sonic drift, and all three fantasy zones! I had many many footages of this master system and the menu screen, i always feels so happy when i turn it on my TV and see that classic sonic adventure 1 render on the menu pointing at nothing
Oh, i forgot to tell you something! There's a brazilian that made a fan "remake" of sonic 1 and 2 8 bit! He added a ton of new characters and modes, all seven chaos emeralds, super sonic, marble zone, starlight zone and springyard zone! It's really damn cool, and all these remakes has a port for mobile, which is pretty nice, and he's also making a "sonic 3 8 bit" it already has a demo but has a ton of cool stuff, like shadow, silver and blaze, and all of them have a new set of movesets, i really recommend you play those remakes
i literally played like half of this yesterday on sonic adventure that third boss beat my ass, and no you aren't alone my jumps also got eaten for no reason on several occasions
There is a fan remake of 8-Bit Sonic 1. And it is also perfectly legal since no one is profiting on it since Sega's policy with fan projects is: "No profit, no problem"

I had a chance to play all the 8 bit sonic games back then in sonic dx. My favorites were sonic labyrinth, triple trouble, and sonic chaos. Those are nostalgic

As far as I know the game gear sonic games were only unlockable in The Gamecube version of DX. I've played the Steam & Xbox Arcade versions & remember being disappointed when the Game Gear games were absent content!
Yeah I definitely got this wrong, my bad.. I had a mod installed that adds the game gear games back to the PC version and just didn’t realize lol
Hi, I'm brazilian, and yes, we do have Master System clones being sold to this day, normally as other consoles bootlegs, like the Poly Station, wich is a NES re-skined to look like a Play Station. We even created a port of Street Fighters 2 for the Master System.

why you didn't at least mention the fan-made remake of the game on android and windows with rest of the genesis levels (optional), other characters, spin dash and super characters, the 7th emerald (they are found in special stages instead)
