    Nice work. We must think alike because as you were rounding over the end, I was thinking 'he should etch a design with some ferric chloride'. Sure enough, you started drawing on it and out came the Radio Shack bottle of etchant. haha. A plain ol' black Sharpie works good as an etch resist too. I've made simple circuit boards by drawing with Sharpie and etching the rest away. Easier to remove than the paint marker.

    That's a fun one. Very good. One suggestion. Dilute your ferric chloride with water. It seems to etch faster. Keep up the good work.

    I am in AWE with how fast you did that. I never thought to take tubing. I always thought to just take a copper sheet and solder shape/solder it

    Cool process Adam. How deep does that etch go down?

    • @adammcmillen977
      @adammcmillen977  Před 9 lety +2

      I'm not sure exactly how deep but the longer it stays in the acid the deeper it goes. at a certain point you want to stop because it starts eating inward behind your design. Also, the more you use the acid the weaker it gets so you'll have to let your copper soak longer.

    3/4 copper pipe, and i think a bic lighter is 3L x 3W to cover just the plastic part of lighter... so a 10ft pipe would make you 40 lighter cases

  • @jdog4534
    @jdog4534 Před 5 lety +3

    They look much cooler when you go all the way up with the copper, cover the chrome then cut away for the striker wheel n gas pedal. Also, you get a better wrap around the bottom if you anneal the copper after you get the shape to slide the lighter in, then slide the lighter in and form that bottom lip, nice n tight ...oh,, and you can drill a small hole at base of flame , at the chrome louvers..
    What was that pen you used to mask off the effects of the acid? That's a cool trick

    I just came across this video, thank you. I’m making copper handles and at the moment trying to figure out the best way to etch designs. Could you tell me exactly what the two liquids were? Also when liquids not in use can you cover to save for another project? What type of rag did you use to clean it at end? It’s my first time working with copper. Thank you so much.

    • @adammcmillen977
      @adammcmillen977  Před 5 lety

      The etching solution is ferric chloride, the other liquid was just water. Yes you can save the etching solution. The rag is just a mechanics oil rag. You may want to explore electro etching as well.

    Hi, nice video and especially instructive 😉👍 I would like to ask if you could measure the outer diameter and wall thickness of the used pipe. In our country in the Slovak Republic it is marked differently and somehow I can not work out the correct diameter ... Thank you 👍🖐️ If possible in mm. 😉

    have you found out a way to make more than one at a time? this seems so brutal on the hands, needs to be an easier way to mold the case or at least do a few at one time?

    • @adammcmillen977
      @adammcmillen977  Před 6 lety +1

      Raging Ragers actually, yes. Working on "extruding" the tubing into the right shape. It is quite brutal on the hands! Working on an updated video actually, I've also designed a nicer, two piece case that encloses the lighter from both ends. Stay tuned!

Also I’ve been working on electro etching as well. Thanks for the reminder, i think i will work on the new video when i get back to missouri. Maybe i can have it done by Christmas!

    Have you considered using copper sulfate as an alternative etch solution? It's much cheaper (readily available in your hardware store as root killer) and less toxic. It's an electrical process

    • @adammcmillen977

      one thing I've noticed is that you need to ream out the ends after you cut it because the pipe cutter crimps it inward.

    • @adammcmillen977
      @adammcmillen977  Před 7 lety

      Dewed G me too! I think it would need to be squeezed into a two part mold. I've been considering making a 24" long mold so I can squeeze out a batch of them. Then it'd just be cutting, rounding over and fitting them which would be way easier on my hands! I've come up with a two part design that encases the lighter from both ends. Stay tuned for the Mark II!

    Yo @Adam McMillen my hands are killing me! Just got done making a few case you can check them out @ www.copperarts.tk . I could really use an easier way instead of hammering copper all day long to get a correct fit. I love the idea of an extruding tube but havent been able to making anything that would work. Its almost Christmas , you already know what to gift me =)

      Looked at your site! The patinaed ones look cool! I’m thinking about making some tubing rollers that form it into shape. Then you can just crank out a whole 8’ piece of tubing to work from while Also minimizing imperfections caused by hammer strikes.
