These planes came from the factory with the ability to carry a 100 pound bomb under each wing. For the New Guinea campaign 19 planes were flown into an abandoned Coconut plantation, 12 Wildcats. Navy aviation staff modified these twelve Wildcats to carry 500 pound bombs. The Japanese sent fourteen barges full of troops and two small ships with supplies. The two ships were destroyed with 500 pound bombs delivered by Wildcats.
As Hellcats became available they were assigned to the large carriers that were used to assembly Striking forces. The Wildcats were assigned to smaller Escort carriers for patrol and protection of the fleet.
