  • Chris Butler and Patty Donahue of THE WAITRESSES are interviewed by Fred Griffith and Wilma Smith on the The Afternoon Exchange which broadcast on June 29th, 1982. The band was playing a show at The Agora in Cleveland later that evening. Chris Butler was already a veteran of several bands including The Disciples (supposedly Cleveland's first interracial rock band), 15-60-75 The Numbers Band, and Tin Huey before forming The Waitresses. The Waitresses were Donahue's first singing gig! Twenty years ago one might have deemed The Waitresses a one-hit wonder for I KNOW WHAT BOYS LIKE, but in the years since another track has emerged as their best known work - CHRISTMAS WRAPPING which is played in stores and on the radio every holiday season. #thewaitresses #christmaswrapping #chrisbutler #interview #fredgriffith

Thanks for uploading this. The Waitresses are very undervalued, despite their huge talent level. They both seem like sweet people. Such a shame that Patty departed way too soon.

I saw them open for Oingo Boingo in Austin in '83. I think I was the only person there to see The Waitresses and not Oingo Boingo.

Patty Donahue, Su Tissue, Lene Lovich, they were always my favorite female vocalists and icons of the new wave era.

Born in 1958, I was raised in Solon, and followed closely the music scene. In fact, I might actually have watched this very "Afternoon Exchange." Love The Waitresses! Like Patty, I attended Kent State. I didn't know, and am saddened as hell to hear, how short was Patty's life-but her music lives on. Thanks so much for this rarity!

I recently found a sealed copy of their first album Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful here in Parma/Cleveland area. Happy I got it in December as their Christmas song Christmas Wrapping is playing now. Fascinated with her career and the groups from the Akron area from the 70s and 80s

I became a fan from the Square Pegs tv show theme. Lots of connections to other bands. I was a waiter too. Band - Maid is favorite current band - Miku is the only one who was a waitress dressed like a maid.

priceless! Thanks so much for unearthing it and giving it an informative contextualization. Do you know anything about the post-musical career of Donahue, by any chance? Wikipedia says virtually nothing.

@@ClevelandLiveMusic I had to look up what that is: a talent scout and developer of the signed artists..was she successful at this, like as in made a good living and never had to go back to normal jobs? There is zero info on her, thanks.

@@joejones9520Unfortunately, Patty Donahue passed away in late 1996 of lung cancer. She was only 40 years old. As for A&R jobs, they're fairly steady once you get hired. Many in A&R don't actually sign artists, they'll keep tabs on modern tastes and trends in the industry, listen to countless demos, attend shows, especially showcases. They work with radio stations (now streaming services and social media) to get a sense of what the demand is. Some in A&R only do they (demand research,) some compile lists of potential artists labels may be interested in and write up their findings. Some invite emerging artists to showcase for a labels, some take the artists through the signing process, some evaluate how currently signed artists are progressing as they write and demo songs. It's a pretty varied field.

I came across a song they did live in 1982 called Hump Day (originally done by Chris’s earlier band Tin Huey) It is done live. I posted a video. The song is not on CD but is on a DVD.

You are welcome. I found a download of a concert they did in 1982 that had Hump Day but the quality was bad. The broom I found on the net was taken from a DVD of another concert.
