I also did an excavator bucket/dirt test.
Do you loose dirt when always digging at the bottom of the full reach?

I decided to run a test myself. I made 2 save files of the same game and dug out the same square. I did one full clean out on each file. The file where I dug from the bottom was 183.72, and the file I dug from the top was 282.53. Also, the one that I dug from the bottom of the square was nearly gone, but the one from the top, I could probably get another clean out from it. That square was supposed to get richer as you got deeper according to the drill results.

But digging from the bottom seems to be easier to keep things looking nice.

im a year late to this point but what is happening here is that the voxels of dirt lose their value as they fall. so when you dig from the bottom you end up collecting the same amount of dirt but you destroy the value of some of the voxels in it that hold the gold value. it might look nice but its hard work for getting gold.
