Hi Wayne ! I'm not one to comment much on CZcams but your channel is so informative and extremely helpful to all your viewers ! Purely genuine my friend ! From Ontario Canada ; All the best Wayne !
Thanks Wayne! I just bought a '99 club car & I'm trying to test everything to see if there's anything wrong with it. Your videos are so helpful. My charger doesn't seem to shut off, but I'm double checking tonight to make sure I leave it plugged in the whole 16 hours. If it still hasnt shut off I'll be ordering the charger repair kit from your web site. Thanks again for all of the great info!
At what point do you unplug it or is it safe to keep it plugged in until you drive again? Will it hurt the batteries to charge after each use or wait until they are drained first?
Thank you so much for all the great info. I have a question. I have a 2007 36v EZGO txt pds I am upgrading my batteries to 12cells 105ah LiFePO4 and I need a charger. Most chargers I see for 36v are 3 or 4 amps that would take forever to charge so I found a charger on Dakota Lithium website that charges at 18 amps. So my question is that okay to charge with?
Good day Wayne!!! Just subscribed. Just bought a club car ds for the farm. I have a lestronic charger. Does it operate the same as the ones your talking about also really loud? Seems to be doing what you described. Thanks again!! Going to rehab this baby !!
If you look in the hole, you will see a collar hanging down from the top , you want to be below the bottom of the collar. Most important is that the tops of the plates are covered with water
Thanks for this information, I put new batteries in my club cart and it ran awesome but after a couple of weeks, it seems that it doesn’t charge up enough, after 18 holes it’s really slow, we live about 2 Blocks from the course and sometimes we’re. Worried it won’t make it home. Perhaps it has something to do with the OBC ? 7:14

Wayne... I have a new Kandi Cruiser golf cart with a built-in charger. Do these carts also have a cutoff switch? I think the owners manual said no more than 6 hours on the charger. Thx.
Hi Wayne. I need to ask the expert. I want to replace in my Genie Lift the Lestronic ll 48 volt batter charger with a Power Drive 48 volt battery charger. I disconnected the 2 main wire coming in to the battery charger and then pulled the 3 prong cable out of the Power Drive unit. The 2 main wires I placed on the Power Drive board, but then I had the "blue" communication wire left. I cut a section of it out of the main cable and plugged it back in to where it was. My question is "will this swap work as a Smart Charger if that blue wire is not connected any where? When we touch it to the left side of the meter gauge there is "activity", but we are not sure if that is supposed to happen, or if this wire has to be connected somewhere else to make it a smart charger? Looking forward to your advise.
Without the blue wire, the charger shouldn't turn on. And if you run the blue to the negative, it will come on, but not turn off. Get a different charger
I have a 2012 ezgo txt should my batteries be bubbling when charging it set off my carbon dioxide sensor in the garage it’s only been charging for 3hr when this happened. All my batteries are properly filled with distilled water
Bubbling yes, that is very common, they even bubble without the charger being on. Also yes you will get that Sulphur smell once in in awhile, usually it's either when the batteries are new, or the water in them is low, or if you have a bad cell or bad battery.
Hello. I have a cart im messing with, i thought i would try the cheap walmart marine batteries. 12v x4 with the powerdrive 2. I suspect this charger burned them out prematurely. Could this be possible? Seems like in mid cycle the voltage goes really high like 60 plus volts!
Marine batteries will not last in a golf cart, at the very most maybe 1 year. They are not deep cycle golf cart batteries. Buy the cheapest golf cart batteries that either Costco or Sam's sells and you will be fine. Those Marine batteries won't hold a charge.
Wayne I thank you for all your help and videos, now comes my question I recently changed my receptacle on my club car 48 volt golf cart. Now when I plug in my charger it goes to the 15 amp all the way to the right drops down to like 10 amps after 5 minutes and then shuts off. The problem is when we try to ride the golf cart it has very little power as if the batteries are low. I've checked each battery individually and read about 8.4 volts, and when I checked the whole series of batteries I'm reading 51 volts. I'm wondering if there's a safety built in that if the batteries are overly dead and the charger tries to charge too fast it just shuts down or if it's possible the OBC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much. Larry
2 Things to try is 1st, If you can try your charger on someone else's cart someone else's cart and try someone else's charger on your cart that would tell us if the problem is in the charger or the cart for sure. Next you can try resetting your OBC by disconnecting all the wires off the main positive battery terminal and let it sit for about 15 minutes then hook it backup
Thanks for the Videos Wayne very educational. I get the strong smell of the batteries acid on my 2017 Precedent with the charger built in the cart when it has been charging for some time. It has the battery watering system as well. Could this be a sign I am putting to much distilled water in the batteries. What are your thoughts. Thanks
You don't get the smell when there is too much water, . Even tho you have a water system, open each cap and make sure there is water in each hole. I think you will be surprised. I have had quite a few systems that were not accurate because a float was stuck or a valve was bad. Also had new batteries that had a bad cell in them, smell like that. Check it all out.

The charger looks older than that but I just got the cart and charger and put new batteries in so I was wondering what I should look for when charging to know it's complete? Is the 16 hour rule still applicable?

In the winter Can we leave our golf cart to charge the batteries for maybe 2 days then unplug it and plug it back in in a week or two and charge again if needed? Our charger just went bad and Im worried its because the charger was to close to bad weather
So I have an old G2 I believe, with a charger that just has a timer on it (up to 12 hrs) recently just purchased this, it was running great and then it wasn't, and acted line it had a short in the wiring when it started to act up and not go, when you hit the gas pedal the led light turned on in front, which made me think it is a short in the wiring, I tried charging the batteries with my charger, 2 at a time, since they are in series, seems like the 2 middle batteries are faulty, they both seem dead, unplugged them to charge individuality, and using a reconditioner currently to try and bring the life back, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Hi Wayne, I used my golf cart yesterday night until the batteries power got weak, so I pulled into the garage and connect the Power Drive charger, after a few seconds the charger start to work the needle move to 17 DC I left it connected and jus before I went to sleep the charger needle was on 0 maybe was charging 30 minutes, I wait 10 minutes to see if the charge start again but nothing happen, so I disconnected and wait for 15 seconds and connected again and the charger start working again but after 10 minutes stop again and never start again until I disconnected and connected again, what do you think is happening? thanks for your help in advance with this matter
Hi. I did not add water to my batteries. On my club cart. (This is my first one ) Someone told me to put distilled water in it. It did start. I started it and it moved. I put it on the charger over night, I went out this morning and when I put it in reverse it started jumping and sputtering when I back up. I went forward it did that but stoped. when I first plug the charger in it in only goes to about 8 to 10 then down to 5. The needle does not go all the way to the right at first. My battery was left out on charing the cart under the carport durning a storm ,the next day is when I had the problem. Could my charger be bad??? The batteries are around 4 years old. Did I mess the batteries up maybe by not having water in them. Thanks for your help.
I would only leave it plugged in, if batteries are good, you have a watering system, and you leave the 2 1/2 gallon water tank fully filled with water and left on too of roof.
Can golf cart batteries developed a memory? Like if you use half the charge plug in to charge and do that several times will the batteries only be good for a half charge and go dead.
Hi Wayne, I have a 2003 DS with the original power drive charger, but never know if I charge it long enough. I recently replaced all the batteries and ran at a full meter for quite a few decent trips around the neighborhood and charged it when meter began to drop on cart. What is odd is I feel like I have not gotten back to that original battery install state as charge does seem to drop quicker than expect now. I can do a full 18 and normally just under halfway on cart meter, but if want to try for another round it would seem like need to charge up again. Wondering if I am just not charging long enough since a manual charger (original power drive). Typically around 5-7 amps when I disconnect the charger and most have charged was 4 to 41/2 hours. Appreciate any suggestions and/or questions.
You are slowly killing your batteries that's probably why your last set didn't last. Once you plug that charger and you need to leave it alone, do not unplug it, Let it turn itself off. When you unplug it while it's still hovering at 5 amps you're not getting a full charge. Also it's a bad idea to try to squeeze more than one round a golf in without charging them.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 appreciate the quick reply. Last set was from 2015 and were really old, bought it that way. Does the original power drive (#1) charger actually shutoff? My understanding only way to shutoff was to unplug since wasn’t an automatic charger. Have had the new batteries just under 2 months btw, hopefully didn’t do any significant to them.
If everything is in good working order then yes that charger will turn itself off and that's what you need to do . try never to unplug it before it turns itself off unless you absolutely have to
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 appreciate it, and good to know! Might but what I was missing! And subscribing! The quick responses on a 7month video is amazing.
Depends on when you check it. If the batteries are good, immediately after charging they may be 56 volts. After letting cart sit once charger hS gone off , say till the next day, maybe 51.3 ?
Hi Wayne....great video..thanks...I have a question..I have a Form Charge Smart Charger 36V..noticing that during charging the plug connecting to the cart receptacle gets very hot...Is this normal? Thanks
It should not get very hot. It usually means there is resistance, that can be corroded metal parts etc. Look to see if any pieces are loose inside the receptacle, also spray wd40 into the the receptacle holes, spray it real good.
Can you leave the cart plugged in for a week without hurting anything? We have a weekend cottage and I would like to plug it in before we leave but I'm not sure if I should. Thanks.
If you have a 48 volt club car powerdrive ( any Powerdrive) charger, and as long as you have the proper amount of water in the batteries, you can leave it plugged in. The club car owners manual tells you to leave it plugged in, and it will turn itself on every 12-14 days.
Thanks for this video. I bought a used club cart and just replaced the batteries with new ones. The charger I got with it is old and does not have an automitic shut off. About how long will it be to charge these new ones fully? And will it hurt if they are fully charged and I don't get it unplugged right away? Thanks for this help!
you definitely need to get a working charger, or you can ruin your new batteries. Worst case, do not let charger run for more than 16 hours. However, without a proper functioning charger, there is no way you will get the life out of the batteries, that you should . You paid so much money for the batteries, another 200 bucks is well worth it. I sell used chargers on my site for less than 200 bucks.
I read through my whole manual last night. Upon reading, the manual I have, it says it "is" an automatic shut off. It's a "Club Cab Power drive" 4/00. Sound right?
My problem is my power drive 3 never shuts off. Is that a computer problem. I volt check the batteries, individually after a 24 hour charge and they come up at 9v each. I have six 8v batteries.
Depends on your situation. Baking soda and water is best, but control it , don't let it get on concrete or you will have a stain that will never come out. If you have a old grass area or rocks, you can just use a hose, and just the hose will clean it best .
Wayne, I just found your channel. I love the content. I recently purchased a 2005 ds. I installed new batteries. It works but the charger doesn’t seem to. The needle on the meter never moves and every time I use the cart the it is only going a a mile or two at most. The charger never stops humming no matter how long I leave it connected. I have the 1st charger. Do you think it’s the obc? If I by pass the obc, do I need a new charger? I look forward to your input. Howard
If you bypass the obc, then yes you need a different charger. Have you plugged the charger in and left it alone for 16 hours to see if it turns itself off ?
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Now that you ask, I’m not sure it I’ve left it on for 16 hrs. I know for sure it has never stopped humming while connected. Also I’ve never seen the needle on anything but zero. Are there other indications of a bad OBC?
You can try running a temporary jumper wire from the back of the charge receptacle black wire, to the main battery pack negative, to see if needle moves
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 good morning, after charging for nearly 24 hrs the charger did not shut off, the batteries are all at 7.5 volts. I drove it for less than 5 minutes and it was losing speed rapidly. Also, I jumped the black wire to the negative. The needle moved but it arced and nearly welded the clip to the battery post. 🤷♂️
I charge 100 % of carts overnight. As long as the plates are covered in water, there shouldn't be a problem. How many golf cart explosions have you heard about? Me either.
I just bought 4 x 12 volt batteries. The directions say, charge after the battery gets to 50% and then charge for the first 12 times and then charge as normal. My question is should I do as directed and then charge after every time I use the car? Or should I charge after everytime I use the car anyway even if the batteries are new. And How do I tell if the batteries are at 50% with a voltage meter? Thank you sir. I am a subscriber.
The very first charge should take the longest, don't unplug the charger until it has turned itself off. After that you should charge your cart at the end of any day you use it. If you let your cart get to 50%, they are considered dead, and you may not make it home if you are driving. That is not correct, I have never heard of a lead acid battery company telling to let a battery get down to 50 %
Wayne, today the light is off. I didn’t do anything. Just for my information what do you mean obc? . Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me questions. God bless you.
Great video. I just installed 6 new batteries and charged it for 2-3 few hours and it did not stop charging. So I unplugged it because I noticed a rotten egg smell from the batteries. I tested all the batteries and they are fine since they are new, but when I hook the charger on to the golf cart, it just keeps charging and it won't shut off. I have not charged it more than 16 hours. Should I keep charging it for 16 hours as you suggested even if it has the rotten egg smell? Is it normal for new batteries to smell like rotten eggs? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Yes, plug it in and leave it alone until it shuts itself off, if it does not turn off after 16 hours, then unplug it. It should turn off by itself. Make sure you have water in all holes andre all the plates are covered in water. That egg smell will go away after 2 or 3 charges. If it doesnt go away after you have been driving it and charging it a few times, then check each hole again for loss of water, at that point it is possible there could be a bad cell, but kind of rare.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Here is what my golf cart is experiencing. I have six new batteries and it does take about 16 hours before the charger will shut off. My issue is that it does it every time I plug it in. Even if I just drive it down the street and plug it up. It will take like over night before it stops charging. This has been going over 3 weeks now and I had to refill the batteries with distilled water twice already. I am about to fill up the batteries with distilled water for the third time because it already looks low. I noticed that this 16 hour charging cycle is boiling the battery water and evaporating it, so that's why I am on my third water refill in three weeks. You have any suggestions I can try? Thanks.
sounds like your obc is not working right. Try resetting your obc, remove all wires from the main positive battery pack terminal. Let it sit that way for 10 minutes, then hook all wires back up and charge. If it takes 16 hours to charge, at that point, either replace the obc or bypass it.
Wayne got a buddy that has a 95 club car with the alternator starter and a 13 horse Honda on it if he turns the key and hits the gas it doesn’t start but he can bypass the key and everything and it’ll start with one of those little bumps starts Can’t really figure out what’s going on. He’s already changed the key switch. He changed the little switch of micros switch that someone told him to change and it’s still doing it. He can bypass and get it to crank up but otherwise he can appreciate some kind of comeback. Thank you bye
If it is a pd3, those get very hot. Chargers may heat up depending on the temp of the air and also older or weak batteries may cause it to heat up a lot.
Thank you for the video! I just bought my "new" cart ('97) and charged it overnight. The meter is at zero, but the charger hasn't complete shut off. It's still buzzing, so I'm not sure if I should be hearing this buzz, or I shouldn't be hearing anything at all. Can you please clarify this for me? Thank you!
What kind of cart and charger? If the charger is a powerdrive, when it is at zero , it should not buzz. If it is a DPI, then it will buzz all the time.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Thanks Wayne!. I'd heard the opposite about Walmart Marine batteries in golf carts but you're the expert so I'll take it. Thanks for replying.
Ok, Hold it, you didn't mention marine the first time. Marine batteries are not good for golf carts, not enough lead In them. They will probably only last you 2 years.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 You were close! I'm getting 18 to 20 months. Will change over. I thought buying Marine would be better - more expensive = better! Ha! Ha! Thanks again Wayne. That's why I contact a Pro!
I have a 2007 precedent , bought new trojan batteries , plugged the cart in and left it for 20 hours or so and came out to the garage with the batteries boiling over and rotten egg smell
Egg smell is not uncommon. However if charger ran for more than 16 hours, that's a problem. Either the obc is bad, the charger has been bypassed, or you have the wrong charger.
Easiest way is to try your charger on someone else's cart and try someone else's charger on your cart. That will tell you whether the problem is in your charger. Or your cart for sure before you replace anything..
At what point do you unplug it or is it safe to keep it plugged in until you drive again? Will it hurt the batteries to charge after each use or wait until they are drained first?
If you have a power drive charger, you can leave it plugged in the cart. You should charger the batteries, at the end of any day that you use the cart, DO NOT wait until it is discharged! Never let the batteries get below 50 %.

Thanks
I do not believe on any battery reconditioning methods. I would replace all the batteries.

Hi Wayne, I used my golf cart yesterday night until the batteries power got weak, so I pulled into the garage and connect the Power Drive charger, after a few seconds the charger start to work the needle move to 17 DC I left it connected and jus before I went to sleep the charger needle was on 0 maybe was charging 30 minutes, I wait 10 minutes to see if the charge start again but nothing happen, so I disconnected and wait for 15 seconds and connected again and the charger start working again but after 10 minutes stop again and never start again until I disconnected and connected again, what do you think is happening? thanks for your help in advance with this matter
your obc may be bad. First try setting it.
What happens if you don't wait for the 3rd cycle on charging the batteries to complete the final charge or interrupt the final charge?
Your batteries will not be equalized, and 1 or more will fail sooner than the rest, because they were not balanced.
I have a A 9508 club car and my charger system in the cart failed charger is fine what is my options
If the obc is bad, either replace it, or do a bypass and buy a different charger
Thanks for your help.
you need batteries, yours are no good
Wayne I go to Florida in the winter. I have a club car president 2009. Should I leave it plugged in over the winter (6) months while I’m away? Thanks
I would only leave it plugged in, if batteries are good, you have a watering system, and you leave the 2 1/2 gallon water tank fully filled with water and left on too of roof.
Thanks Wayne
Hey Wayne I need a headlight for my 2004 club car do you have and how much are they
3 different types of lites and 2 models of 2004 club cars
Can golf cart batteries developed a memory? Like if you use half the charge plug in to charge and do that several times will the batteries only be good for a half charge and go dead.
no. The best thing to do is any day you use the cart, charge it when you are done with the cart for the day
Hi Wayne, I have a 2003 DS with the original power drive charger, but never know if I charge it long enough.
Sorry, I always charge after using. Have not played 2 rounds on a single charge, was just my understanding should be able to.
What’s the maximum voltage I should see on my cart after a full charge?
Depends on when you check it. If the batteries are good, immediately after charging they may be 56 volts.
After letting cart sit once charger hS gone off , say till the next day, maybe
51.3 ?
Hi Wayne....great video..thanks...I have a question..I have a Form Charge Smart Charger 36V..noticing that during charging the plug connecting to the cart receptacle gets very hot...Is this normal? Thanks
It should not get very hot. It usually means there is resistance, that can be corroded metal parts etc. Look to see if any pieces are loose inside the receptacle, also spray wd40 into the the receptacle holes, spray it real good.
thank you@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900
👍
Can you leave the cart plugged in for a week without hurting anything? We have a weekend cottage and I would like to plug it in before we leave but I'm not sure if I should. Thanks.
If you have a 48 volt club car powerdrive ( any Powerdrive)
charger, and as long as you have the proper amount of water in the batteries, you can leave it plugged in.
The club car owners manual tells you to leave it plugged in, and it will turn itself on every 12-14 days.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 That's what I have. Thanks again.
👍
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Thank you so much! And for responding so quickly, much appreciated
I read through my whole manual last night. Upon reading, the manual I have, it says it "is" an automatic shut off. It's a "Club Cab Power drive" 4/00. Sound right?
The club car chargers will shut off by themselves, when everything is working right.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Ok, hoping everything will be! Thank you!
My problem is my power drive 3 never shuts off. Is that a computer problem. I volt check the batteries, individually after a 24 hour charge and they come up at 9v each. I have six 8v batteries.
If charger does not shut off, the issue is most probably either the obc or a bad battery.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 thinking it’s the OCB, thanks for the reply
Nice
What's the best and what to use on cleaning the batteries
Depends on your situation. Baking soda and water is best, but control it , don't let it get on concrete or you will have a stain that will never come out.
If you have a old grass area or rocks, you can just use a hose, and just the hose will clean it best .
How can I know if the charger has turned itself off?
The needle will drop to zero, it also will stop humming or buzzing, and it will cool down.
It has ir on the front, how do I tell which light
you dont know if you have a ds or a precedent?
Should I leave it alone even if the charger is getting really hot and you can hear the water in the batteries boiling
Yes don't unplug it before 16 hours has passed, if it doesn't turn itself off after 16 hours, then unplug it.
Hi Wayne how does power drive works or does thanks
Sorry not following you?
Did you watch my last video?
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 I will try this. Thank you.
What about hydrogen gas discharge if the golf cart is charged overnight in the garage??
That is not correct, I have never heard of a lead acid battery company telling to let a battery get down to 50 %
My golf club cart is fully charge, but the warning light still on. What that could be? Thank you
Depends on if it's flashing, how many times, and for how long.
If you drive the cart, does the lite go off and stay off?
No the light stays on all the time.
Either, lite is bad, batteries are bad, or obc is bad.
Try resetting the obc

@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900 Thanks for the quick reply. I will try your suggestion. Thanks again.

I am very sorry, but I only know about electric golf carts, I have never touched a gas cart, so I am not familiar at all.
Wayne, is it normal for the charger to get very hot ?
If it is a pd3, those get very hot.
Chargers may heat up depending on the temp of the air and also older or weak batteries may cause it to heat up a lot.
@@waynemartin.waynesgolfcart4900Thank you so much for your very timely response!

DOESN'T matter what brand of batteries you use, they are expensive, so take care of them.

Im not gonna guess. If you want help, text me pictures.
Must be OBC ,,I have had the cart for 10 years and the same charger the whole time and never had an issue. Thank you for the quick reply! 🤠
Is there a way to test the OBC?I am proficient with a muti-meter
Easiest way is to try your charger on someone else's cart and try someone else's charger on your cart. That will tell you whether the problem is in your charger. Or your cart for sure before you replace anything..
Get to the point
I see your point, and i like the way you comb your hair around it.
