Have you heard any of these myths before, or do you have any to add to my list?
Only men can be an artist.
I have heard every one of them. Not only heard them but believed them. I think I may give the online sales thing a go, thanks to you.
I love to paint realism, preferably animals. I'm tired of my critics saying that you can't sell realism, you have to paint what is trending. I just don't want to paint a blue deer or a pink horse so I don't.
I have thought long and hard how to reply and still I do not wish to risk bad feelings. So let me start by saying that you are a wonderful person and a great artist! Having said that, I must dispel another myth.
Yes you need to sell high or produce more or be employed by someone to make a decent living at the Humanities. However, most people who excel in the Humanities (who are everywhere) don’t make a living at it at all (hobbyists I guess you would say, but I would go even further to say People of Charity). The best example of all this would be to give you all the World Wide Talent Shows that are televised.
Yes, if you want to make a living at your art you will have to do what every business does. You can make a living at the Humanities in many ways without going world wide (e.g. Street performers in cities or tourists areas), but sure why not if you can-especially with today’s modern technology!
I can say so much more, but I digress…time to dispel a Myth that even you are pushing-i.e. that art is a Luxury that belongs to the Rich.
That is absolutely NOT true. The Humanities belong to everyone of all classes. Our works springs from the soul and feeds other souls-the Rich have no exclusive claim to this.
Having said that, it is a shame that Galleries and the Rich have issue’s with us also selling to the lower classes (screw them!) while they have to pay more. Well let’s face it…those people are also using us to make money! And lot’s of it. Well, you can solve all of this.
1. Simply don’t care what they think of you OR 2. Pseudonym’s.
#2 is done all the time-even by big Rich People and Corporations. You can sell on the high end and the low end and all the in between. If the Rich discover this…so what? You are giving them the better and more time consuming pieces…THAT is a Luxury item as far as that goes and they can buy your other works as well…looks like they were shopping at “Walmart” today instead of the Higher End Store in Beverly Hills….hmmmmmmm….
defiantly! my art school teacher told me my art is terrible, and the only real art is realism. i mostly do digital cartoon, but i dont stick to one style. all i did in school was draw over all my books and sleep at the back of the room (sleeping problems)
it hurt and still shows its face from time to time, but now looking back, there is no "one magical art style" art is how you want it to be! (^∀^●)ノシ
I love your videos. I have painted my entire life and I found so many helpful drawing tips. I took a drawing class in college and didn't learn a thing. I have learned more from you in one day, I thought "Oh, she's new. I'll watch a video." Five videos later, I had to tell you that I enjoy them so much. Y are an excellent teacher.
I agree! Your channel is excellent.
Just getting ready to sell physical art for the first time. I'm really enjoying these tips and videos!
That is awesome!
Love your attitude! I have always had a real drive to create & have done many thing to fulfill that drive. Started watercolor at 76 & LOVE it’s magic! Thank you for all the time you spend teaching people like me 🙏🥰
That is awesome, and you are very welcome!
I am born and raised in the Netherlands, though I live in Iceland now. I can tell you that your pronunciation of "van Gogh" is nearer to the original dutch, than that english one you think of as "right".
NB. Lots of good points, I should take number 10 especially at heart ( on the old geezer side of the spectrum😉)
Ah, I am so happy 😆 Thank You!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber That was a quick answer! Noticed your reply as I was adding a bit to my comment😄
Thank you, Michelle, you have been my inspiration since the first video I watched of yours!
I am going to be 69 next month, and I never even thought I’d live past 60 since my grandmother died at 60. I realize it is an irrational idea, but I really thought that.
I also became disabled with severe fibromyalgia and degenerate disk disorder after a complete hysterectomy at age 40.
I had worked all my life, and raised two daughters mostly on my own. So it was devastating to think I couldn’t work any more.
I finally realized I had to ‘Bloom where I was planted’ when in my garden, I felt that was what God was telling me…
That was a turning point for me, I found ‘You Tube’ for searching how to do most anything, then I discovered pastels, I loved it and found I was kinda good at it, however the dust in my lungs was a problem.. then I found Acrylics, fell in love with those, and then I found you! I was enamored by you with your life story and that water color painting was soo beautiful! I had water colors as a child, and it just made a mess…😂… soo I still am amazed at water color and loving everything you teach me!
Really art has been a life changer for me, even though I mostly do it here at home, it keeps me feeling young! And it gives me a reason to get up in the morning, something that is me!!
I’ve always been someone’s daughter, someone’s mother, someone’s wife…etc… but now I’m finally me!! ❤️💝🙏🏻💝❤️
So I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for how much you can reach an old woman’s heart! ❤️💝🎨💝❤️
Ah, thanks so much Sara, so glad you have found my work and stories helpful! Good luck with your work. By the way, you are not old!
Thank you sooo much, Michelle! ❤️💝🎨💝❤️ You truly are an incredible person! Your Daughter should be over the moon proud of you❤️🎨💝
Thanks so much; you answered a lot of my question. Yay! You are a cancer survivor! Thanks for sharing your personal stories! I appreciate you!
Great video. You said, in a very nice way, don't make excuses because you won't achieve your goals. Success really is all about having a can do attitude. Thanks for the pep talk.
Thank you so much for every myth you have put to rest here! I paint in acrylics and have become good enough to come "out of the closet" and into the sales market😂. I find your videos really helpful.
Happy to help!
Thank you thank you! I am the daughter of a professional portrait artist. You consistently give 'real' effective information!
You are so welcome!
Traci, RIGHT?! My family seems filled with pro artists, and they're nice and everything, and I love them dearly, but these "basics" videos are informative _and inspiring._ I was never "the" artist, but I think I could be _"an artist"._ It's hard work, but I get some joy out of it (still learning a lot). I'm giving it a go, too!
Love this video Michele. Great information for seniors (like me) selling art. Thank you!
I'm 61 and just retired from mental health services. Now I'm an artst
Fantastic!
flying by night and sketchy is a part of my brand.
I enjoy your videos. I think your viewership will continue to grow. This one...wow, great advice and encouragement. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Thanks Sharon, glad you are finding value in them X
Brilliant - thank you Michelle. You have given me a lot of food for thought!
Thank you for this wonderful information! I was able to listen to it while I organized my art room. But most especially I’m so happy to hear that your health is good, what a wonderful outcome. Thank you for sharing that.💕
Thanks that's kind of you!
Just found you, woohoo!! Michele, you speak clearly and straight to the point. I like how your videos have a huge lack of silly and fearful nonsense we've all heard for years. Honestly, THANK YOU! I remember when I was 15 a few of my teachers tried to discourage me from pursuing art with some incredible logic like "study something else, go into science, don't waste your intelligence". Or you know... Artists are all starving and living under bridges, that's what I hear the most. I have (FINALLY) decided to ignore all this nonsense. I seriously appreciate your objectivity and realistic, practical approach to doing what you love and encouraging others to get business smart and go for it too. It is extremelly important that artists reshape the way society looks at us and these old feeble myths need to go. Also high-five for being vegan, you look wondeful! Thanks again for your wisdom :) I've already subscribed!
No problem Vitoria, being vegan is easy, I always hated meat. I can't even eat vegan food that looks like meat :-) :-) When I left school it was literally 'Do you want to be a secretary or a nurse' because all women were good for was looking after other people (no offence to wonderful nurses). Thanks for subscribing! X
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Woow, interesting about those "limitless" options! Glad you've found your way 😀 xx
Inspiring video and advice. All of your points are right on!
Thank you Michele for all your words of wisdom and advice. I find you and your work very inspiring. You keep me coming back for more.
Wonderful!
Thank you Michelle, you are a great confidence booster, Just discovered you a week ago...A great finds so many exellent tips. Thanks.
Yay, thank you! Good luck with your painting Paul!
Loved this. Appreciate the honesty and the “up yours” attitude to ageism.
Thank you Michele. Wonderful positive and inspirational advice.
You are so welcome!
Wonderful video, thank you so much.
I hundred or even 3 hundred per cent do agree with you!!! I shall be 62 within one week and I am living another life since I am retired. After I left drawing during 40 years I started watercolor painting in march 2020, and nothing to do with covid!😃 I just strongly wanted, needed to give it a try.... and one year later I am now thinking business !😃 And I go out of my studio, recently showing my work on Facebook groups, creating my Facebook page and web site, and always listening only to my own little voice inside and positive people !!! Your videos have been and still are so helpful Michelle !!! Thank you very very very much.
You can do it!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us. So many positive things to do with improving selling or even beginning to work on art.
@@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 Not yet. But thanks for asking.
Hi Michelle, I have only followed your videos since the Covid-19 pandemic and you are an inspiration to me, this video especially has given me help and guidance thank you
So glad the video is helpful to you Pauline!
Great words of wisdom- thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
WoW! Your life story summary is extremely similar to mine. You are an amazing lady!
Aw bless you ☺️ thank you!
Ty for sharing what you do. Be Well.
You are very welcome ☺️
I would love a video from you about properly photographing artwork. Information about making prints of your work would be useful as well.
Hi Emily, I do have some on Patreon, videos like that don't do well for me on CZcams unfortunately!
THANK YOU !
You're welcome!
#8 oh yes. One of the reasons i became a hairdresser was to be able to be creative without the "risk" associated with being an artist. I thought this was true for many years until i actually met artist that make a comfortable living selling their art. Wish i knew that years ago, so i wouldn't chicken out of doing a Fine Art degree. (i tried a Design degree and just couldn't finish it.)
Art degrees aren't always necessary, I don't have one, in fact I find formal education very frustrating, I prefer to learn from other artists.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber oh yes definitely, a degree isn't a guarantee of anything. I just wish people didn't discourage others from pursuing a career in art just because they are unlikely to be come the next millionaire artist same goes for musicians. Or anything creative really. I, for example, have no interest in creating hair for fashion shows or some abstract hair designs that promote a brand, or as a piece of art do display in a gallery. I'm still a bloody good professional hair stylist 😊
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber They'll try to stuff your head with Marxist clap-trap anyway. Give the whole sector a miss.
Thanks for this video Michele, really helpful. Have you got a video on how to create prints and how your store all your paintings?
Not yet Sue but it's on my to do list. It's a very long list! I have also been asked for a studio tour which I will do at some point, may help for storage ideas 🙂 xx

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber thank you 😀
Hi Michelle, thank for a very informative topic. In your experience, do people prefer purchasing art with a frame, or rather frame it themselves, and/or does this differ when selling online as apposed to at a fair?
People often think they will save money buying unframed (not true), I never send framed (glazed) work throught the post, it's impossible to keep it safe or insure it properly.
Great video, excellent information. I got my black belt in Shotokan Karate at 50. Glad you’re well and thriving.
That's fabulous, well done!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Still training over zoom but not quite the same.
@@catherinemillsart6641 it's not, luckily our club is training in person although we aren't sparring
Van Goghgggg is totally fine in the Netherlands🙂🙂🙂 thank you for your great video's and have a wonderful day!🍀🌸🌸🌸
Thank you! 😃
Great informative video!
Thanks so much ☺️
Good information. I just got my first commission to paint a watercolour painting of a farm. I have a customer that is coming tomorrow to view a couple of my painting that I posted on my Facebook page. I will take your advice and setup a website.
my God, you said you had turned 51, you look very young and lovely too... thanks for these sensible videos on art as a business 👍
Ha, thank you 🙏 I am 53 now ☺️ It's quite surreal. I tend to ignore it 😆
I am in love ...
Some good advice, but the fact that I was most amazed about is you are over 50! I thought you were much younger!
Ah, bless you 😆 I'm a bit of a health freak, I guess it helps...
-)I always say it is fine to find a gap in the market....but is there a market in that gap for you? :-)
Actually your pronunciation of van Gogh is correct. He was Dutch and they use the hard G.
Yay!
Respect. I started painting and drawing one year ago and I turned 50 last januari. I thought that was a bit too old to become a real master painter. But then I thought; Maybe I’ll become 100 and I’m only halfway at the moment. There’s still time enough for me to produce at least one masterpiece. :-) Heck maybe even two or three :-)
Plenty of creatives have created their best work much later in life! You've still got plenty of time, Annie!!
It's not 'van go' that's an ignorant American idea. The best English equivalent is 'van hoff' but the h needs to be like the Scottish 'loch'
You do not look 51 at all !
That's because I am 52, and bless you, I have had a bad day so this was a nice thing to read X ☺️
In the Studio with Michele Webber - I thought you were about 38/40 ...... oh and great vid’s love watching them..... I will eventually come to your classes/courses 😊
@@julialord9110 Perfect. Daresay I look older in real life!
I’ve seen you in real life and you only look 40! Whatever you are doing...keep doing it 😂👍
