The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Al Hirt.was a terrific trumpet player. I rank him right up there with Doc Sevrenson Louis Armstrong and Herb Alpert.
Years ago Doc Severenson said Phil Driscoll was the best.
Louis Armstrong was very good too
@@josephschauster3689 he was but no one I have ever heard has compared to Phil
Let's not forget Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie.
@@kenroman777 And how is that relevant to a video of Al Hirt?
This man is a trumpet just having a blast sharing his sound an absolute amazing talent along side his fellow instruments love it.
Al Hirt was one of the greatest N'Orleans trumpeters who ever played.
The Round Mound of Sound in the flesh..🥰
Fantastic playing aside, I've noticed on all his performances, his beautifully engraved LeBlanc trumpet -- I think it was gold-plated, too --- and he seemed to always play on a Jet-Tone mouthpiece -- and what a sound!
What beautiful videos, thanks to the Ed Sullivan show and to all those who have kept these videos for so many years, it is admirable because today many remember and others of us know great artists of the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s. Thank you and hopefully you can share Latino artists who were on the Ed Sullivan show.
A's drummer droppin' bombs! Ha! love it!
Amazing musicianship all round.
Such talent on the trumpet
Hard playing a trumpet that high. amazing video. thx. Bruce
True, but there's more than the notes being sometimes higher; there's the total direction and shape of his musical phrases...and the power that all of it was built on.
Like a masterpiece of painting that looks like a living entity, but it's just a well painted rendition with all kinds of perspective, shading and whatnot (those might be comparable to a trumpeter's high notes or technical wizardry), Al Hirt played solos that included elements of prodigious power, strength and range within his greater musical expression. He did not dwell on high notes and use those as his gimmick, but he loved to use them to our delight!
Big man. 🙂
Wow Al Hirt !!! Thank you !!!
Great song! Never heard it before. BTW, I got HIRT while watching this!
Oh! So good it Hirts! "One good 'ting about music / when it hits you / you feel no pain" -- Bob Marley

Martin Committee, babe
Lowell Miller on bass?
is that a young Pete Fountain on clarinet?
Hirt’s longtime sideman Pee Wee Spitelera.
@@kozakid thanks
I think the tune they are playing is actually "Dear Old Southland," not "Deep River." They are very closely related (if not nearly identical), but a Dixieland band would be more likely to be playing Dear Old Southland and not a traditional spiritual.
@Michael Laprarie ~ It was "Way Down Upon The Swanee River" and Hirt also played "Dixie"...
It's not Deep River. Dear Old Southland.
Uh-oh- He played a few notes of "Dixie." The PC communist Yankees will go nuts!
