      1. If you are a scholarship kid you may not be rich. 2. It is serious oppression + abuse when private schools sell a right wing faith in DISCIPLINE, in shouting at + slave-driving the kids + degrading them with silly rules. Because school, simply school, is wrong for that reason authoritarianschoolingcouk
      libedorgukslash indexdotphpslasharticlesslash414-high-learning-potential This happened in the 80s at Balfour House, in Wales. It was a short-lived down-market private school in an old stone rectory building, with poorer facilities than the competing state schools as we all gradually realised, no sports fields of its own they had to bus us to another site, and there was nothing posh about the kids there. They pronounced "ears" as "years", and they mocked public school talk (in Britain public school means the poshest type of private) the same as any state kid would.

      @@crisk75 Yeah, but normal school in a fancier building (with higher paid teachers and better equipment) is SUPERIOR by definition.
      I mean, white supremacists usually agree that other people are people. They just think that whites are superior people.
      Let's be honest, the whole point of a two-tier system is to build-in an advantage for the privately educated. It is literally a supremacist scheme (although in this case it is not a racial supremacy but a financial/educational one).

    • @davebuchan81
      @davebuchan81 Před 5 lety +20

      @@crisk75 I went to a 'normal' school in the UK. It's not my fault I have a decent education and it's not your fault that yours was more expensive and probably in many ways 'better'. Neither is it something we can be proud of. Like they said in the video, we are all privileged - some more than others.
      I am very 'chill' haha, maybe I came off as being a bit blunt but I'm only saying what I think.
      I am not blaming anyone, or judging anyone. I am not comparing anyone to a white supremacist, just using that as an example because the person in the video worded it funny.
      I don't care how much it cost or what grades you got, and I'm not remotely jealous - but it is definitely a kind of supremacist scheme. It is by definition and if were not, then it wouldn't exist at all - would it? :)

    • @erinrose1097
      @erinrose1097 Před 5 lety +10

      davebuchan81, totally agree. The worst part is a lot of them see themselves as better off. Children are growing up entitled, and a lot of them don’t think anything of it. My mum’a a teacher at a public school, and she knows a private school teacher that at the end of the year threw out a years worth of brand new supplies. (Because they could have germs🙄). Meanwhile, in her public school classroom, half the class can’t afford new supplies.
      And then of course is the perception that because I attend public school, I have not amount to much, and of course I could never become a doctor or a lawyer.😂😂 (hopefully I can come back in ten years and say that I’ve become a pediatric oncologist)

    • @davebuchan81
      @davebuchan81 Před 5 lety +4

      @@erinrose1097 That is a very good ambition :)
      Remember, even if a lot of them see themselves as better (and even see you as inferior!) there are many who don't think like that.
      If the school you go to is like mine then there are many who think they are better than the council estate people - there are silly judgmental fools everywhere at every level. Ignore them or use them to fuel your ambition. Don't play their game, and when you see it - don't let it make you angry or sad.
      Let it make you humble and remember how privileged you are compared to so many. That is how you avoid being entitled yourself. Laughing at them is definitely the best way, especially if you can do it in front of them haha.
      It's easy to be blind. You will be better, but better because you care - not better because you can afford it!
      Hopefully there are a good portion of privately educated people who will do the same. Good luck with your studies :)

You’re still receiving a first class elitist education that the other 93% of the population not in private school couldn’t hope to recreate. Whether or not you payed for it you ARE PRIVELIGED. That’s not an insult, it’s facts. Stop complaining about it.

      Words On Stilettos I’m sure you did work hard. So does everyone else. But most of us don’t get the opportunity to then apply to private school. I personally work very hard and go to a grammar school, but that’s not just down to my hard work, I was also quite privileged and I’m self aware about that. There are so many socioeconomic factors that determine your place in life, especially in this classist country. All I’m saying it that two people can work just as hard as each other but only a few of us are going to have the opportunity to attend a school like sevenoaks no matter what we do. It’s okay that you’ve grown up with privilege. It doesn’t mean that you haven’t faced difficulties or worked hard. It just means that you started off in a better place, and that helped you continue on that path later on. Thanks for listening to my ted talk.

What this video is NOT trying to say is that privately educated kids are victims of society or that they are so hard done by and it’s ridiculous to assume this.

      DreamersArmy The only person I heard mention privilege, was the black guy and the person next to him then said that was the same thing as luck. Luck and privilege are NOT the same thing. Luck is a matter of chance and I'm sorry, but if you're in private school you've had very different chances from children who have grown up in impoverished areas. This still applies (although to a lesser extent) to scholarship students. To gain a scholarship you usually need to pass some form of test. Many children from impoverished areas have not had a good primary education and many struggle with unstable home life's, making it less likely they'll pass these tests.
      Lucky for some kids is getting three meals a day. So to say that's the same thing as privilege is bullshit.

    it wasn't their decision to go to private school it was their parents, so why yes their parents may be rich or well off, they aren't necessarily. Plus a lot of people in private education aren't rich. Of course they are privileged but not by their own fault they just are and why it is not the most important subject to look into, its wrong to say you cant talk about it because it upsets people who don't agree with what they have versus what others don't. Everyone lives different and everyone is different.

      Still MOST of the fees, I notice. So their family does still have enough to pay that. Also the minority of people in that situation in private school is so small it doesn't affect my view.
      Personally I feel that the problem with private schools is you are only surrounded by certain groups of people. I am not denying private schools have diversity, but it's still never going to be as much exposure as you would experience in a public school. You aren't going to meet any other kids in poverty or who aren't financially stable.
      exposure is important because it gives u a certain understanding of the world and prepares you for life.
      Also like the people in the video said, there is alot of pressure when you are in a school of high performers, or your place at the school is dependent on your ability.
      I don't think private schools offer enough benefits to be worth it

Leading to them earning more in the future and then their kids going the same all the money stays at the top. While the rest of us are sat taking cuts to our children's education enforced by a government of people who were all privately educated. When I was in first grade, I was quite an outcaste, and I was already bullied for that. Later, a group of "popular" students found out that my family was more privileged than them (If I'm correct, I think it was from the newspaper because our family was big, and we have some successful business people. Actually, before they found out about my family, they bullied me for using cheap, old stuffs.) Then, I was picked on more physically and socially. The slapped me (together 6-7 people), pushed me down the stairs, imputed my mom that she is a prostitute, and many more. I didn't want to make them think I was a spoiled brat, so I kept it all to myself until those people left to a new school.

    • @albertbrammer9263
      @albertbrammer9263 Před 6 lety

      They seem lovely...when have you ever spoken for any length of time with one of them? BBC3 always get a totally unrepresentative panel whenever they are attempting something like this. Look at the percentage of UK born ethnic minorities that go to private school and tell me this group is representative. Secondly, a single video of this type is cut to demonstrate the point the editor is wanting to relay, so if anyone of them said anything even slightly controversial it would be edited out. Why not have them answer questions about what we think, instead of "things they hear" which is a pile of steaming horse-shit.

    • @alicewonderland9527
      @alicewonderland9527 Před 6 lety +3

      Albert Brammer You're right, I don't know these people. That is why I used the indefinite verb 'seem': it was simply, my impression of the people. I'm sorry if your outlook is more pessimistic. Secondly, in this video the ratio of white british to other ethnicities is 5:3. If you look at the 2015 ICS census you will find that 30% of private school pupils are not white British, meaning the people in the video are at least somewhat representative. Finally, I don't think this debate really matters. Clearly you don't like this series; the premise is 'a steaming pile of horse-shit' as you so eloquently put it, and so I am not going to sway your opinion further.

      @almas7234 Před 6 lety +47

      Private school kids are genuinely misunderstood. Etonian and Harrow students are projected as pompous and full of themselves, but that’s not always the case? Yes, they’re privileged in the sense that yes their parents had money and they were lucky enough to go to private school. I was too. But this isn’t how every private school is. They’re just normal beings, made out to be arrogant based on their parent’s money. It’s an unjust system, especially from the ones who are actively opening charities to try and get working-class individuals into Oxbridge and other top-class universities. They are misunderstood. This series doesn’t have a level of severity in terms of a physical scale on how misunderstood people are compared to others. One isn’t more understood than the other. It’s just a different range.

    Coming from someone who made the mistake of a private education for my later years, I think that, at least in my case, private school is a toxic and challenging environment. Sure, I think in comparison to my state funded primary education there were some amazing benefits like smaller classes sizes in a private school, proper funding, world class facilities etc. but there is an astonishing level of pressure in private school. It's all about league tables and how private school A is performing against school B. Independent successes are not celebrated, in favour of celebrating how the top students are performing at representing the school on local, regional even national levels. Or even it's about how many students have gained places at university - why would anyone choose another path? Why would anyone shame the school by choosing to work after school? As if it's not enough that the education is tough and the environment is mentally exhausting, the people are socially exhausting. If it's not parents impressing with the latest porsche or hosting the whole of your year for a party in their lawn it's the other pupils who'll drain you with their endless stream of the latest gadgets, fancy over-the-top expensive clothes and their disdain if you're anything below middle class. And what's more, when you're finally managing to cope with all of that, you then have to learn with how people treat you when they find out you went to private school. You must be rich! What was it like? How did you get in? Thank god I can tell them I was a scholarship/bursary student so at least i can escape posh kid status...

      Like at the other schl nobodies pretending to be nothing and dont get me started on parents cos lots of them are so much more cold ( or maybe theyre just tryna be proffesional ) at private school

    I went to private school and it does carry a stigma, but literally the only reason I got sent there was because the other choices of school in the area were so dire (less than 10% exiting with 5 A-C GCSEs), if they'd been half decent I would have gone to one of those. As a parent now myself (no they don't go to private school) I totally understand why they did it even though I wasn't happy about it at the time. My parents weren't rich, they were both teachers, but they decided to put the money into my education rather than things like holidays and fancy cars.
    And I'd say over 50% of my girls in my school were not white. There's also different types of private schools, some are academically selective (which usually offer substantial scholarships for the academically gifted), some are not. We did have a few rich kids in the school, but generally speaking most were like me, from a working class backgrounds with parents who worked their arses off so their daughter could get a half decent education.
    I just hate the way people talk about it like I had a choice in the matter, like it was my decision to go....

      @Starscream91 oh the hell, in my understanding being rich or poor doesn't affect your feelings. Having money doesn't make your sorrow melt away. Money gives a little more comfort on financial moves but that's about it. Being not rich gives less stability and that stresses people a lot. What you are saying is incorrect, because everyone has a fair share of peoblems they deal with. There isn't a single person in this world thai is completely happy and pleased with his life. Nothing can change that. What I call a lucky person is one that can manage their problems with dignity and pride. What people do is forget that and clinge to little things like fame, family, love or money to find happiness but it can't be found. A person always envies what they don't have for example you envy the rich and the other envies non rich. You see, there is never a place you can't feel negative feels but what's important is that when striving for better you be humble and understanding.
