Just to clarify Blue, Al Ghazali's "The Incoherence of the Philosopher" was far more nuanced than just smacking down all philosophers. He wrote the book because he was worried about philosophers taking things too far.
Like Ghazali was a strong Muslim and it was his prime objective to use all form of reason to connect back to Islam. What he was worried about was some philosophers wasting their time and energy discussing things hypothetical and philosophical scenarios that served to benefited to society and Islam. Basically, he thought philosophers were diving in so deep that the philosophy no longer had any practical application. He feared questions were being asked just for the sake of discussion instead of furthering religious understating. This is the "incoherence" he refers to in the title.
But a lot of people in the West have misinterpreted Ghazali's wirings are rebuking all of philosophy. This is way too broad of a statement and a notoriously Orientalist viewpoint. Ghazali was not rebuking all of philosophy, he was just criticizing how many philosophers at the time were straying from actually productive philosophy. They were wasting time with impossible hypotheticals instead of tackling issues that human beings as they related to Islam and introspections.
Like philosopher. He 100% understood its uses, which is why he made his critique of how philosophers at his time were straying form the true purpose philosophy should have.
The real one who despised all philosophy and logic though was Ibn Taymiyya who is the prototype of Salafism and Wahhabism (the ideologies producing terrorism).
Anti-philosophical views is rather anathema in Islamic thought (as reason and studying the natural world are heavily promoted by the Qur'an itself). Sunnism and especially Shi'ism have always heavily utilized philosophical study, sometimes their native Islamic philosophy (such as what was actively spoken of and taught by thr Ahl al-Bayt) and other times synthesizing Greek thought (while also being critical of it too) but nonetheless has always held a strong position in the Islamic worldview.

First, before I say anything else, I want to say that I really, really enjoyed all three of these videos. They were a really nice perspective and, as always, very informative. I can tell the amount of love and work that went into making these, and I really appreciate it! Thank you for making these videos, and I'm going to show them to all my friends.
I remember when I was young, I was sitting in church and the pastor was talking about this woman that Jesus had met at a well. A Samaritan woman, as it were. And she asked him about where the proper place to worship was. She said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Our ancestors worship on this mountain, but the Jews say that we must worship in Jerusalem." The pastor stopped reading and said, "Do you understand what that means? They worship the same God. The Jews and the Samaritans both worship the God of Jacob, the God of Abraham, the very same God. But they were separated over religious and political differences, despite being children of the same Father. Isn't that tragic?"
Edit: I found the passage; it's the Gospel of John, Chapter 4, if anyone was interested.
Fun fact: The Samaritans were 'half breed' Jews- the children of those taken into captivity. They were a mixed people, and were kicked out of the Jewish cities by the religious leaders of the day to retain a pure, chosen people. Makes it even more tragic, huh?
Fun fact : all the abrahamic religions are poorly plagiarized from a dozen older religions, historic events and people. All religions are inventions of fascism for social and economic control of the people.

@Enetheru1999 Nobody is ignoring that the religions are incompatible, but simply pointing out that they do have many similarities, especially in ethics. They can find common ground in the fact that a society that has all of them can still function in peace, even though they disagree. Actually, religions are even closer to each other than political beliefs are, since it's easier to function daily with people that disagree with you about somewhat apstract things (such as creation of the universe) than with people that you disagree with about human rights, distribution of wealth etc.

When Al Ghazalis titled his book “incoherence of the philosopher”, he didn’t take into account centuries later people will judge him purely on the title without reading a single page and having 0 context of the debate around his time.

I tried posting some of your videos to groups I'd think would value the subject matter, but I got a complaint that you don't cite your sources and thus they can't verify the info and by extension don't trust your content. I assume its some college textbooks and secondary supporting history books, but the complaint I received would be forgiven for not thinking "probably some textbook" is a sufficient answer. How do you feel about the necessity of source citation in your videos?

I genuinely like how you tackle this issue and the biggest thing of a civil discussion between Christians, Jews and Muslims and getting to heart of what each is. I do have on slight thing to add about what you said of the Christian scholastics saying "heresy!!! God is not a mover He is a trinity!" I believe that to be underselling the magnitude of the theology of God in Christian teaching- correct He is Three- but Three are He. The Mystery of the Holy Trinity is consistent with that of Aristotle's early concept of a great Mover because of the clause that God is the Mover (one) yet is of Three. That would explain why Saint Thomas Aquinas and his contemporaries didn't refute the pagan thinker- but at essence the concept is in line with that of the Faith. A bit rudimentary but in fact, correct. Fun fact: for the Catholic Church, the feast of the Mystery of the Holy Trinity was yesterday.
"Mystery" means "not even known to be true". If the Holy Trinity was a thing it wouldn't be a "mystery".

If God behaves in ways consistent with the nature claimed for him, like the beautiful flowers and butterfly than of course that is what you expect from God. If you're talking about the bot fly larvae which burrows into the eye and through to the brain of a young child, or the typhoon which kills 3,000 people, then you roll out the "mystery of God". You glorify the good and mystify the evil so that what is observed in the world does not falsify the essential "goodness" of God.

First of all Al-Ghazali's criticisms were mostly at Noeplatonic metaphysics, not at philoophy as a whole.
Secondly, he was not like the supreme ruler of all Muslims, and there were many significant philosophers after him, like Mulla Sadra
Yeah the sack of Baghdad didn't help it either, however, al-ghazali had a lot of influence so he might not be the only reason but certainly one of them. IIRC ghazali's followers went ahead and were even more radical than he was.
This is an old video, but I love the notion of cultural dialogue and the benefit of cross-cultural discussion. I am an atheist but I can't deny the huge weight of thought that went into this era and anyone that wants to champion it.

I avoided watching this and your other videos on religion and the Crusades because I've run into *way* too much hate aimed at religion in general and Christianity in particular. College was not a fun time for me.
Thank you, thank you, *thank you!* You *get it!* Faith and reason aren't diametrically opposed! Philosophy and science arose from religious thinkers. Yes, the crusades were a mess, putting it mildly. An occasionally well-intentioned mess, but still a *mess.* The Catholic Church may be founded and upheld by God, but it's still made up of humans. Messing up is what we do. Thank you for understanding that last part, even if you don't believe the first.

While I'm no longer religous, I very much appreciate these videos for showing me the historical context for said religion. I won't lie, Christianity is a bear when the priests and deacons won't explain it in context with the actual history behind the stories.

Major problem with that: You can say that about any religion.
The fact of the matter is that, in this day and age where most of the United State's population has NOT read from the bible, or any other religious teaching, allowing a lot of people to misquote and sometimes even fabricate what said teachings say.
People love to take quotes from the bible about how horrible Christianity is, but for those who have not read it, that means nothing for today's standards because the same thing could be said for any number of other religious factions which people seemingly refuse to do.
I mean, how many people in this comment section have actually read the bible, or any Muslim teachings? (Don't answer that, we'd be here all day). To me, it doesn't even matter what the bible said because most Christians nowadays don't follow the same religious teachings and the bible has since become one of the go-to guides for "why-you-suck" speeches which acts more as a personal attack rather than a proper argument.
I see it as more important to look at what people are doing NOW rather than what they DID because otherwise we would be judging people for things that are entirely unrelated to them in the present day. We can't do anything about the Crusades and how horrible they were to both parties. We CAN stop terrorist organizations like ISIS, the KKK, and other prejudiced killers who attack people (I would say "based upon the color of their skin" but that is completely irrelevant. People are people, no matter what).

It's sad that most Muslims today don't understand what Islam is about. The book itself tells you to be neutral about everyone regardless of whatever their nature is or what they are interested in (as long as they're reasonable anyway)

Took me a while to get into this one, not sure if it's because I'm used to the fast talking style of red and came into this expecting the same, or just have just been over saturated with the over abundance of philosophical history videos on CZcams... Either way good vid. Just feels like something's missing.
It honestly makes me sad that three religions that came from the same person pray to the same god have the same fundamental basis of life hate each other to the point they are ready to kill each other whenever they have the. As part of one of these religions (Islam) it makes me sad , disappointed and honestly angry on all the mistakes that have been made by my community and I pray for people who lost their lives fight wars for fools and the people who lost their lives and loved ones because of those fools. Who couldn’t see the beauty these three religions have they are like a brother hood. I want this generation to find common ground and improve. Get rid of all this hatred. I with all my heart apologize to people who have lost their lives to the atrocities of ISIS taliban and alqueda I ask you all to think of them as People with no god no faith and no moral restrictions and not as Muslim.

I think uniting people through common ground on humanistic philosiphies would do the world SO much good in today's day and age! But that also doesn't mean we shouldn't critique religious doctrine and the uses by those who practice it, either. (Not that Blue was suggestion we shouldn't, I'm just making the point that "Being nice to good people" and "Criticizing religion" don't have to be mutually exclusive.)

than an entire semester of a course in this exact subject did...
Though to be fair to my professor, he was very fond of chasing the philosophy and language bunnies...I learned a lot, just not about THIS.
As a small personal observation - I find a great deal of the conflict between Christians - er, Protestants that is - seems to spring from the pervading urge to "witness to" the non-believers. I don't know enough general "church" history to say if proselytizing was ALWAYS a big deal, but for the Methodist and Baptist sects of Protestantism, it's very nearly more central to their daily faith than the deity. I'm not trying to blast them, nor to hold them up as a good example, here: just relating what I've seen over and over (and over) through my forty-ish years of life. Folks are fine discussing the broad strokes, they get tense when the talk edges into theology as you said...but get into any kind of "this is how I personally interact with the ideas of my faith" and wham, respect goes out the window in the most alarming manner...
And may I say, many months late - it makes me really happy to once again see the smartest people I've encountered in the world saying this kind of thing. Reason and compassion HAVE to win...eventually. Right?

I like this and find it a fascinating video, though I'm not sure how useful it is to attempt to find common ground in the philosophies of different religions as a route to peace, because I think it's reversing the order of operations somewhat. Interfaith cooperation & acceptance should be the starting point, whether or not the religious worldviews can cohere. Afterwards, if you wanna talk philosophy, that's fun and often a worthwhile pursuit, but I don't think you can _get_ to peace that way -- what happens if the views do turn out to be too disparate?
Also, a minor quibble: Passover is only a single weeklong thing, not a multi-week fast.
Just a note (from a Muslim who grew up Catholic and is married to a Jew and loves Buddhism and practices an ostensively Daoist martial art that was beloved of Chinese Muslims) ((who works as a philosophical theologian)):
1) “theology” these days is generally defined in Tillichian terms as something like “the philosophical study of ultimacy.”
2) Islamic philosophy kept on a’truckin after Ibn Rushd (Averroes) died. Check out Suhravardi and the Ishraqiyyun, Mulla Sadra, philosophical Sufism rooted in Ibn ‘Arabi, philosophy among Muslims in India, etc. Peter Adamson’s podcast (History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps) has covered this extensively.

Awesome video, some corrections though:
- Augustine wasn´t properly "platonic" in the sense he interacted directly with Plato´s works, he didn´t read greek and his access to Platonistic philosophy came from commentators and biased interpretation from the neo-platonic school, greatest amongst these, Plotinus who had a HUGE influence over Augustine. That said, this isn´t to say Augustine was ignorant, he knew by heart many of the religious doctrine and philosophy of his day.
- Also, the idea that philosophy and theology as independent of one another would only begin with Duns Scotus, before that, until and including Thomas Aquinas, Theology had prominence over Philosophy and the latter was seen as an accessory to the first. So you can´t really say there was a "religious philosophy" strictly speaking, only philosophical ideas inspired by religious doctrine and, most of it, subordinate to it.
- Also Thomas Aquinas and most of the scholastics only knew Aristotle either by commentaries or rough translations of the originals to Latin, and translations of philosophical works are, at best, (very) well-informed guesswork, since the comprehension of many concepts (and hence their translation) depend on understanding the many layers of meaning of words in the original works, greek especially is extremely polysemic, that is, words can have a multitude of meanings that are to be understood through context. This means many of Thomas Aquinas ideas, as much of an incredible genius as he was (and boy, he was), was written from incomplete information of the Aristotelian Corpus.

We're all interested in philosophy and history and tend to be pretty open minded.
However, I disagree on the assumption that all three religions 'basically worship the same God and should thus get along' because I think the image the three religions have of their deity is radically different.
Same God, it's just that one is looking at the kneecaps, another the nasal hairs and the other is considering the ear-wax.
Reminds me of _The Adventures of Hucleberry Finn_ where Miss Watson and widow Douglas both tell the title character about Providence. As it turns out, the two interpretations differ to the point that he "could see that there was two Providences".

I question whether the three religions follow the same God. Muslims say that Jesus was a prophet and not God, and Christians claim Jesus is the Messiah, and therefore God, and Jews are still waiting for the Messiah, thus invalidating Jesus as God, and turning him into a heretic, and not a prophet as the Muslims would say. Also, Allah telling Muslims to slay the infidels is contrary to Jesus' teaching of love your enemy. So while yes, they do share similar roots, the three are fundementally different. Judaism is waiting and laws, Christianity is loving, and Islam literally translates to submission. And yes, there are exceptions, but in their most basic form, waiting, loving, or submission are the primary differences in spirit of the three religions.
Judaism: Law and Order
Christianity: Love and Peace
Islam: War and Submission

Reg Eric if we gotta be honest, all religious texts spout violence on one end and peace and love on the other. I’ve seen things just as bad in the Bible as I’ve seen in the Quran, all with God destroying whole civilizations and allowing what basically is a genocide of the Phillistines. At the end of the day, these were books made thousands of years ago in a time wholly different than our own so what you got to do is adapt your faith with the times you live in. If I lived off the Testament like one who lived when it was written, I’d probably not bat an eye at massacres against the infidels and sacrifice them because it’s gods will :)
