  • Long time Pittsburgh news anchor Wendy Bell was recently fired for racist comments on her Facebook page. Should she have been fired? Suspended? Ana Kasparian, Hasan Piker (Pop Trigger), and Grace Baldridge, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Hearst Television, the parent station of WTAE-TV, said in a statement Wednesday that it had “ended its relationship” with Emmy-winning anchor Wendy Bell because her “recent comments on a WTAE Facebook page were inconsistent with the company’s ethics and journalistic standards.”
Two weeks after the attack, Bell wrote on her professional Facebook page, “You needn’t be a criminal profiler to draw a mental sketch of the killers who broke so many hearts.”
The original post, which has since been removed but was captured in screenshots, continued:
They are young black men, likely teens or in their early 20s. They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs. These boys have been in the system before. They’ve grown up there. They know the police. They’ve been arrested.”*

Anthony Marcus Wrong!, if you see rain clouds in the sky, and you live in Seattle, your not being prejudice, if you say it’s gonna rain tomorrow. Prejudice is to pre-judge a situation WITHOUT knowing facts, she knew certain facts and called attention to a problem, a problem being swept under the rug everyday in this country, I applaud her for being brave enough to speak out. As far as being bigoted, she never used the N word, or used any demonstrative descriptions, it’s her city and that gives her a right to speak.

Wow, considering the likes and dislikes this is a very divisive issue. Honestly, even me writing this write now, my statement is public. It may not be seen and people might not care but as I speak publicly I need to be prepared to assume responsibility for the ramifications of what I say. Her comments reinforce a very toxic mindset. A mindset that links race with a propensity towards crime. She could have speculated that the criminals were disadvantaged or desperate without linking their race as if that also has something to do with being a criminal. Also the restaurant stuff was extremely condescending and she should've been checked on that. I think it was right to fire her for the suspect comment and start a dialogue regarding the second comment.

I think the problem with this dialog is that we have three white people discussing racism as an abstract concept and how it affects the white person. Very little is focused on the effects of an award winning news anchor perpetuating a racist narrative in a public forum and how it affects black people who had nothing to do with this incident. It's all about how her "mistake" is affecting her "career".

  • @christopherbyrdakaSuperman

She is an adult first and a reporter second. She is also a racist. She just nicely stated that fact. You can’t assume all black children are raised by single mother and that the father is not around. I personally know people in other races who were raised by single mothers and the father was not in the picture. Furthermore she should’ve had anything to say about the young man at the restaurant. The fact that he was working there, or just working at all, that was so petty on her part.

Statistics aren't biased and aren't affiliated to a race or political agenda. The problem is people use statistics conveniently, not consistently. Call it what it is. Bad but accurate analogy; if your car over and over again won't try to start, you don't blame the tires because you're worried about the battery's feelings. You go to what the root cause is and call it out.

      @PrinceVigilanteX Před 8 lety

+Seta-San It tells you nothing. She was using fallacious reasoning.
"Why?", you might ask? Because, first of all, race isn't a real thing. So how can you draw valid conclusions from something that doesn't exist? Secondly, race has nothing to do with it. Unless you can demonstrate that there's somehow a genetic link between black people and crime, you've got nothing.
So in order to draw the conclusion she did, she'd literally have to base it on nonsense. Whether it was racist, bigoted, stereotypes, etc, it doesn't matter, because the reasoning was invalid.

Their lives in the hands of the White police due to harbored stereotypes and racism are not up for casual discussion. Denunciation of Black people instantly when they have not been accused of any crime, or caught in that crime is due to her deeply held negative opinions that she used her public image to spread. +TheBananaThug I agree, and it's not like separate sets of people saying it. People are saying both, "We need to have a dialogue" and "You can't say that!" and, well, as soon as you tell people what they can or can't say, even publicly, that stops the dialogue. It doesn't matter how terrible the comments are; as soon as you say, "You can't say that!" instead of, "Here's where I think you're wrong," you stop the dialogue. They need to make up their minds.

This is pretty hypocritical of TYT to say the reporter should not have speculated before the facts were out. TYT did the EXACT same thing when a young man walked into an abortion clinic with a pipe bomb in his napsack. They immediately labelled him a religious right-wing nut who was hell-bent on blowing up the clinic. The fact of the matter was the kid walked into the clinic to apply for a job and was carrying all his personal belongings in his napsack with him and, being a young kid, one of the items was a pipe bomb. TYT never apologised to him for the slander nor issued a retraction. 'Glass houses', TYT.

I'm black, and I draw conclusions about the race of suspects, that are reported on local news, all the time. If you're familiar with a geographical area, the racial makeup of the area, and the crime trends in that area, its easy to hazard a guess as to who the suspects likely are. There's no need to ignore reality just to prove that you're not racist. Given my geographical area, if I hear a report about an armed robbery on a street corner, I assume that the suspect is black. If I hear that a major meth ring was busted, I assume that everyone involved was white. I don't see anything wrong with drawing conclusions about the race of a suspect, as long as you don't assume that every black person you encounter is a criminal, or otherwise a threat.

Now I'm sorry, but this is an issue. Especially considering she was right. These debates need to happen, yes what she said had racist undertones, but you need to identify the socio-economic problems. Yes, black people tend to be socio-economically less well off than whites in general, they're harassed by police, they're discriminated at job interviews but you can't deny that not ALL the problems within this community can be fixed from outside of it, change needs to happen within.
How do you start these conversations? With open public debate, thats how we beat the homophobes, thats how we beat the conservative christian right, its how we beat the segregationists in the 60s. etc
Why can't we say that, yes black people are systematically discriminated against in America BUT they also have issues within their own community. Why can't both issues be addressed? Because idiotic ideologues on both sides think its either 100% society at large on the left, while the right think they should sort their own community out and take some personal responsibility. NEWSFLASH AMERICA: ITS BOTH.
The issue is when you take these positions rather than getting support from both sides the opposite happens and both sides condemn either as a wide eyed liberal or a bigot. That is NOT ok.
