    It's really funny, I watched like 10 reviews for this device now and not a single one, including this one, goes into annotation with PDFs. I mean we can see that he is able to write into the PDF. But what the hell happens with the annotations then? Are they visible across devices? How are they stored? How is it integrated into clouds such as onedrive? It's one of the most important information for professional use. When you work on a scientific PDFs and annotate a lot, are these annotations then only visible on X? Can the PDF be synced with onedrive? Seriously, the target group of this device is professional users, who would be interested in video performance??

      Agree this is a weakness with all of these reviews, and in fact the devices as a group. The crappiest iPad has excellent PDF management, but even the most full-featured e-ink reader is crippled and limited by comparison. But it would be great to know just HOW limited and in what ways so we can identify the best options for those who need/want to read on e-ink. I have a Note Air 3C and my impression is that this is as much “real world” integration as is currently possible - I had to buy the device to figure out exactly how it works in this regard. It sees my PDFs in Google Drive just fine and automatically syncs my annotations in a way that my Apple devices can see, they show up in PDF Expert properly, and can be edited/deleted there. I really wish I could integrate it with Zotero, but that seems very kludgy at this time compared to the iOS experience so I haven’t tried it. If anyone has their Zotero documents in Google Drive or DropBox I think this device would access them fine but I’m not sure how the annotations would show up in the Zotero interface. But the whole interface is terribly laggy and slow compared to an iPad; the writing and PDF annotation experience with the Lamy EMR pen is great, but too many pen/touch commands are missed and have to be repeated - the interface is a constant source of annoyance. If you have one PDF to read and markup it is tolerable, but if you’re trying to churn through 40 papers for a lit review all the lags and errors will drive you crazy. Overall I think an iPad is a far more capable device for scientific reading due to seamless cloud integration, PDF management, and speed. But the pen/surface experience on the Boox with a Lamy EMR pen is SO much nicer than on the iPad Pro with Pencil 2. If Apple could do that I’d be happy forever.

      And that, of course, is what's slowing acceptance of these devices. And will eventually spell their doom.
      At some point Microsoft, Apple or a similar company (there aren't many) will decide the e-ink market is worth pursuing. And at that point we'll all flock to them, 'cause suffering a massive, ridiculously and unnecessarily obtuse and convoluted, cinstantly-changing UI: that's just abusive.
      UI & data-handling: these appear to be the Achilles heel for this market.

    • @dianachacon187

      I have it set up wher annotations get imbedded in the pdf and saves to google drive (you can also use other services or export it to email) thus you can see them across devices. Check the MDO playlist and he goes in detail how to set up a pdf on any boox device and the way it looks. Hope it helps.

    I installed the "beta" version of the firmware, and found it includes many very interesing features: searches in handwriting texts, improved GUI...
    I think the booxdrop is really a fantastic tool: easy sharing of files with any device, and without cloud (Yes, I care about my privacy).
    The negative of this tablet, so far is the localization/internationalization: very few keyboard layouts, missing time zones, no automatic detection of the text language, difficulty to mix several languages in the same text, etc.. Not a bloquer, but it's worth mentioning.
    Generally speaking, very happy with the device and it software.

    Great and comprehensive review of the Tab X, thank you. Do you think front light uniformity is better on the Tab Ultra than the Tab X? Is text clarity on the Tab X using normal mode as good as on the Tab Ultra? I'm thinking of getting the Tab X instead of Tab Ultra due to bigger screen and more RAM memory but prefer the device that has the best text clarity and backlight uniformity.

    Hi Voja,
    Thanks, been looking forward to this! There is a "standard" template in the cloud section that has both 24 and 30 lines. The 30 lines are pretty good on the 13.3" screen. Do you not consider this a "standard" template?
    Also, the screen friction test continues to be interesting. I think that the Tab X is way smoother than the rM2 when writing side by side with the same pen (either rM or boox pro 2). I guess that glossy feeling is not friction, but I don't know what else it could be? Writing on the tab X feels like writing on an OLED glass screen tablet to me.

I am wondering if you can address the issue of reliable resellers and the risk around warranties and returns with Boox, i live in Canada. Amazon Canada does not carry Boox products and there is one tiny store in Canada who claim to be an official seller. I have read all sorts of less than pleasing comments about various websites that sell Boox products and the difficult nature of Boox’s customer service. It is really holding me back from buying one and pushing me towards a scribe or a Elipsa just for the peace of mind. Thank you !!!

    It's obvious that Boox really puts their effort into the 10-inch space as it relates to their notetaking-focused devices. Then they say, let's take the work we did with 10-inchers and throw that into a 13-inch shell and call it a day. That was the case with Lumi 2, and the tradition appears to live on with the X. I understand why people might prefer these devices as it relates to PDF reading and marking, but outside of that, I'd advise everyone to steer clear. The best Boox experience is on the 10-inch space where the sales likely are and that isn't going to change in the foreseeable future.

    • @CyrilJap
      @CyrilJap Před rokem +4

      @@robertanderson2424 10.3 Tab Ultra has SD card slot, magnetic place for the pen, dedicated keyboard case, fingerprint reader, 227 ppi, and is overall better made than the 13.3 Tab X which looks like was made just because they could fit that good old 207ppi 13.3 screen with the new GPU in an old case for the few people who might want this size. When they’ll release a 13.3 better made with optimised software, I’ll be the first to order one, but I’ll pass on the Tab X for the reasons above.

    • @jeffreymoss
      @jeffreymoss Před rokem +3

      @@robertanderson2424 I just saw this, sorry for the delay in responding. In addition to what CJ said, let me offer another example. If you see a template on a Boox 10" screen, and let's assume it has 12 lines in that template, than the Boox 13" version will also have 12 lines. But why would that be, as the 13" is larger and has room for additional lines? It's because they just brought the same templates over. Also, look at the care they put in design to the 10" Air devices. There's a style there, an attempt to stand out. But the 13" devices are mainly just basic slabs. Here I will give some points to the X for having some sense of design, but that's a new thing for that size category with Boox. When I had the Max Lumi 2, I was struck by all the little details that made sense on a 10" device but not as much on a 13" screen.

    I’m interested in the Boox Tab X, particularly if it allows two features I use on my Remarkable 2. They are 1) Ability to insert blank pages into a PDF, for example Voya’s MDO. And 2) ‘infinite pages’ where you can scroll down on a blank page and make it longer and longer as you write. Are these features available on the Boox Tab X?

      I think its just price. They've slowly been working prices up now that they're adding color and new tech. Most people are hesitant to buy something like the boox x for 700-900$ depending on where you're getting it. For me, I just want something like a remarkable/supernote but in 13.3 size. The only things that kind of fit that are the quaderno a4 gen 2 and the papyr ( which went out of business unfortunately), and the quaderno has horrendous battery so its out of the question.@@colbyboucher6391

    It is certainly a mystery why Boox failed to update Tab X to a similar state as the 10.3" Ultra version, with keyboard connection pins and keyboard cover, micro-SD port, (ungodly camera bump on the rear instead of properly embedded cameras like Bigme), and a magnetic case and pen attach. They do have the best software suite, even if it comes across as a "work in progress". Perhaps the slightly increased pen latency is a property of the 13.3" e-ink panel itself rather than the GPU or software. Nevertheless, I am sure you will enjoy reading large format .PDFs on it, slight warts and all. Another very complete Voja Deep Dive.

Max (13.3" device); Tab (New User Interface, GPU, Speed, similar to Tab Ultra); Air (Thinner, Lighter for the size, Minimalistic and user friendly design like other Air devices). I hope that the Boox software team will consider the MDG / Voja comments/recommendations in future software updates (to improve the battery life by bypassing the GPU in settings, to improve links in Notes and Neo Reader, external keyboard use, simple screencast and use the device like an external monitor, landscape-portrait canvas management in Notes, files management/local backup in native notes format, etc.)

      It is possible to arrange it in any way you wish. You can also use the split screen functionality, or turn the device to landscape format and then fit to width, and you can even adjust the size of the system font. So all of the possibilities are there, but you need to learn how to use the device.

    Hi Voja!
    Thanks so much for all these in-depth reviews!
    I think it doesn't act like a flagship device because *the Max series was never intended to be the flagship*
    It's expensive mostly because it's big, and you have techincal issues scaling eink panel with the implied batery drain (more ink capsules that need to be physically moved), frontlight that needs to be distributed uniformly (so maybe more units fail quality checks?)
    It's just a niche device, for those few people who really want the big screen - for most, portability & weight & price might lead to choosing a smaller device.
    It's big to serve this niche user segment, not necessarily to impress.
    Onyx always innovated with the 10.3 and 7.8 inch devices, and then *maybe* updated the Max series to match the new design, a year or so later.
    So I think it's unfair to judge any Max device as a flagship device. Doesn't it make more sense, if you see it as a stretch into a niche?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před rokem +9

      To me, no, it doesn't make more sense. It's rather simple, average buyer will take a look at a product range, and when they see the biggest device, which is the most expensive one, and with beefiest specifications, well, that's a flagship, or, it's supposed to be one.

    • @studiovkv
      @studiovkv Před rokem +1

      People are different... In my case bigger = better (in many other cases also ;-). The device is expensive, but the value of my eye sight/vision is much greater. And the price difference between Boox 10.3" and 13.3" devices is similar to price for new good quality prescription glases...

    • @MrGatamata
      @MrGatamata Před rokem

    Bought one too. I hope they will fix those software issues. I also think that, despite the improvements, they can still make the OS more accessible and the learning curve less steep. @@andreagiaretta2456 I think I cannot add much that Voja already did not cover. To read papers, I definitely prefer the 13.3 format and the ability/freedom to customize the page for optimal reading/notes taking that Book gives you. However, the Boox system sometimes can be too much for me. They added so many things that the learning curve is quite steep. For quick notes-taking I still find myself use the R2. Especially because I can keep the R2 on sleep instead of power off for weeks, giving me super fast access on the go. in summary, it depends on your use. For note-taking I would consider Supernote or Remarkable (Voja seems enthusiastic about the first). If you instead use it to read tons of papers (and take notes on this), I would then go for Tab-X at the moment.

    A significant drawback of my iPad is the screen feels slippery to write on. As a result, I have trouble writing neatly on it. I was concerned after reading other commenters on the Internet that the Boox devices would also be slippery in this way, so it's very interesting to learn from you that the feel of the Tab X is different than the Tab Ultra. I really think Boox would benefit from taking a pause, reviewing their software instead of releasing new devices non-stop. The current state of their software is very unstable, I feel they will benefit significantly as a company to take a pause on new hardware briefly, clean up their software and continue from there. Right now it is very difficult for me to recommend a boox device to anyone I know even though they have the most potential.

      I tend to agree, but I would be able to recommend a Boox device, but with a big provision, which is the learning curve and the unintuitive UX.
