Checking An Extension Cord For Breaks

    It use to be difficult to find the breaks in an extension cord. Oh they were usually near the ends. Caused by yanking the cord out of the wall or tying a knot in the cord to join two cords. The ones in the middle were a bit harder until I got this Ideal Volt Sensor.
    It was purchased to check for voltage in wires before I worked on them. Just a last-minute safety item. Carrying it around got me to thinking of other ways it could be used. This is one of the ways that I first used it for other than verifying a dead circuit before it gave me a poke.

    Good tip. I have one of those voltage detectors. I never thought about using it to test my extension cords. DOH! I have a long 16gauge 3 wire extension cord which broke a conductor somewhere along the length. I will now be able to track down the break and cut off the short end.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

      @@OldSneelock Right. You know how it is around conveyor belts with guarding and emergency stops and lock out/ tag out, the whole thing. I remember the refresher classes and Fatalgrams. I also remember starting a small return conveyor with a 5 foot bar through the bars in the tail pulley to keep from shoveling. It was a combined effort between me and the guy on the switch. We're both still here so it must've worked but he was the one that cut his finger off with that big grinder.

      I have mixed feelings about OSHA.
      I broke a finger by having it in the pulley on a sand elevator when the guys shoveling out the bottom of the elevator got the plugged buckets freed up.
      The elevator ran in reverse and snapped my index finger.
      Locking out the power wouldn't have helped.

    Those little testers are quite handy. I’d repair an extension cord, but I normally add a new plug or socket at the break, not a splice. Kind of risky, but I guess for indoor use it’s okay. As long as the insulation isn’t deteriorating in other spots. Great tip though.

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  Před 3 lety +2

      The tester is a life saver when working in industry.
      Massive snags of wire are difficult to trace out.
      Being able to sense current potentials without having to pierce the insulation is very helpful.😁😎

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yup that's right I didn't tell you to plug the cord into a recepticle to provide power for the tester to detect.
      Test from the plug end because that is where the power starts. If you don't find any then you know right away.
      You can actually start at either end. It might take a bit longer.

    what if only the black wire is broken? will the sensor still work?

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes. Since the sensor only detects current if the black is broken it will tell you where the the first place the black wire is broken. there may be multiple breaks but the first one would have to be bridged or repaired before the second one will show up. Each subsequent break will have to be treated the same way.
      If the white wire is broken there will have to be a load on the wire to send current through the white wire. Like plugging in a lamp.

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  Před 5 měsíci +2
