It's been a whopping 17 years since Nissan introduced the last generation Frontier pickup. In that time, new rivals have emerged (or re-emerged), while other competitors have grown more sophisticated, stylish, and capable. To make up the slack, Nissan is throwing its best design and features at the 2022 Frontier in hopes of capturing a sizable chunk of the small truck market.
With a carryover platform and naturally aspirated V6 engine, it's fair to be suspicious of Nissan's commitment to this "new" generation Frontier, but its handsome exterior and upscale cabin aren't to be undervalued. In this in-depth review, Miles picks apart the 2022 Frontier Pro-4X's exterior, interior, and driving dynamics (both on and off-road) to see if it's a better option than the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and Ford Ranger FX4.
    Options Equipped:
    - Cardinal Red Tricoat ($395)
    - Technology Package ($990): Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, front and rear emergency braking
    - Convenience Package ($1,990): Spray-in bedliner, four adjustable tie-down cleats, bed mounted 120V AC outlet, rear cabin 120V AC outlet, Heated outside mirrors, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, LED bed lighting, remote engine start, towing hitch receiver with 7-pin wiring, surround view camera, wireless smartphone charging
    - Premium Package ($2,790): 17-inch Beadlock style Aluminum alloy wheels, 10-speaker Fender sound system, Leather seating, black stitching, premium door trim and center console stitching, power moonroof, auto dimming rearview mirror

Just bought a Frontier SV. One of the most overlooked features is the height of the interior cab. I’m 6’5” and after looking at other trucks on the market I found more headroom in the Frontier. It has very comfortable seating arrangement.
It has snowed a lot recently where I live and my Frontier handle it with ease and great control. I love driving this truck.

one of the things i liked most about the previous gen frontiers was the absence of bells and whistles. just straight up good engine, good frame, and reliable truck. no fancy overhead camera, 10-speaker sound system, other "standard" creature comforts. i love simplicity and i don't need all that other fluff, so the frontier was and hopefully still is, a great, straightforward truck.

Extremely detailed review of pro4X. Thank you. I feel like the Prox4 is just overkill for 90% of the pickup buyers.

The reason a lot of people buy the Pro4x instead of lower trim is because the SV trim isn't enough less to justify giving up the extra features of the Pro4x. There is only $3000 difference between the SV and Pro4x and you get a lot for that money.

Great detail on the review. I'm currently driving a 2018 Pro 4X and really like the revamp of the 2022. I'll wait a year or two before I pull the trigger on the upgraded Pro 4X in case they run into any hiccups or recalls. I greatly appreciate a non-biased review with honest comparisons to the competition. Very helpful. Thanks.

Hands down the best review for the Frontier. Needs= ventilated seats for southern buyers, rear A/C vent, the back seat is tight; I currently drive 2010 F150 160k miles has been a great truck with no problems want to go midsize. I have test driven both Frontier and Ridgeline. Love Frontier looks and build, BUT Ridgeline rides smother and is more expansive with more room in front and back seats with rear power window and rear A/C vent plus all the extra unique things like the trunk. I am torn between the two and do not go off-road often. Tough decision Thanks for the review

Good all inclusive review! I've owned 2 previous gen Frontiers and a current gen Tacoma and a previous gen Colorado, and the Frontier is the best of the bunch, in my opinion. And this redesign improves on everything that owners have always loved about the Frontier. It's more than capable enough offroad for 95% of buyers and those who want more can upgrade the suspension and still have all the other great aspects of the Frontier. It has also caught up with the Tacoma in reliability over the years, even though people never give it credit for that. That said, I wish the new long bed came with a better set of features. I want the long bed, but I'm not paying $40k for a truck that's missing LED headlights, heated seats/mirrors, moonroof, etc. I suspect they did it to save weight on the long bed, but they should've designed more capacity into this new version rather than cutting basic features.

No replacement for displacement. Good luck towing 7500lbs with a 4cyl…a turbo just adds more complexity and vulnerability. Modern 4cyl turbo’s more than likely will need a AOS, another inconvenience I don’t care to worry about. The PRO4X isn’t perfect but it fits the need of most buyers…Nismo or the aftermarket will deal with any of its shortcomings. Too bad they don’t offer a manual option, but would love to see what an Edelbrock supercharger can do for this V6.

Hi Wildman. “Just a little jump”. I didn’t see any comments suggest for “sport mode” try poking the Tow button. I sure like the quiet cab, smooth Mercedes backed tranny and all the physical buttons to poke, knobs to twist. Ride is good enough for what it is. Looks are good, especially the LED lights on Pro4. Somehow I never paid attention to Nissan Frontiers before, never really noticed them. Must be the new design hits me right. Bright blue, cloth seats, heated steering wheel for me. I’m not there yet to actually write the big check… back and forth, the final hurdle. 36 years ago I bought a brand new F-150 4x4 Lariat, 302 V8 and 5 speed manual, $12,800 ! What they cost now is hard to wrap brain around. Unfortunately that F150 was a true lemon, ditched it after 15 mos. and 15k miles. 3 leaks, 3 alignments, special shims needed, 2 brake jobs, gas tank sender, dash dimmer only worked one narrow spot, first engine oil consumption dropped to 350/qt. Second engine started at 1200/qt. and if shifted up too high, lugged, engine bucked and missed and ran on like 5 cylinders until 2000 rpm hit, then all 8 fired perfectly. Dealer couldn’t figure it out. 1989 little Blazer was next, 80,000 miles and only a new ABS controller and a wind seal adjusted. Zero oil used in 4,000 miles. What a joy to not have new problems to mend every 4 to 6 weeks !! More F150 probs not listed. That was a baaaad year. Several times I waked 5 miles one way to work. Other times I “rented a wreck”, old used cars for rent like $14/day. Out of my pocket. I was livid. The Ford Service manager eventually pulled me aside and whispered “That’s my Toyota 4Runner, it gives me zero troubles, I’d get one of those”. I never repeated that to the owner boss man of that dealership, service manager may have been fired. But what I did like, killer low beam headlights, I kept getting flashed and a very comfy seat and seat position. Up higher, knees more bent. Dash was almost car like, very nice. That’s the good I can say.

I got the pro-x luxury package with leather and black wheels but 4x2.
I like the truck. But right off the showroom floor it had something loose on the front drivers side and they had to fix and then re-align.
Now my backup camera is broken and I’m waiting on a new camera assembly unit that they said could take months to come in.
This is a brand new truck with less than a 1k miles.
And I think the 4x2 pro_x should come with rear differential locks like the 4x2 Tacoma TRD’s. But I’ve had two of those already.
So I opted for Nissan and coming off the brand new re-design. Starting to question it though. But besides those specific things I like the truck.

My Z71 Colorado was 35k an since change and will out do what that Nissan can do. It will have a better resale value and be more sought after than the Nissan will. Another problem with the Nissan is they didn't change out the frame on it. They should have redesigned it from the ground up and not go cheap by using the old frame. They're going to have to do something about fuel economy sooner rather than later. Gas is approaching $5 a gallon in some areas, and 19-20 combined mpg isn't going to cut it going forward. It might actually affect resale significantly given that serious hybrid and possibly electric midsize offerings are coming from Ford and Toyota next year. There is no excuse for full sized mileage in a midsized truck, not with the technology available today, especially so with DI and a nine-speed. I find this very neglectful or sloppy. I loved the truck otherwise, but I'm waiting for more economical options next summer.

It is kind of absurd that most of the 1/2 ton trucks available today offer engines that get better fuel economy than anything in the midsize class. The 2.3 ecoboost in the Ranger is the only midsize option (excluding the far less capable 4 cyl offerings) that gets similar mileage to the most efficient full size options.
