    Listening to Guilliman's demeanor when meeting Ventris, I like to imagine that Guilliman consciously tries to talk to Ventris the way he wished the Emperor spoke to the Primarchs - as father to son(s).

      I would say that this is an astute and accurate statement.
      Gilliman was always more....."Human" than his brothers. Hell, most of the Primarchs were no more than biological superwaepons designed and made by a Tyrant to do the Tyrants budding.
      This Primarch......He actually cares about how the outcomes realy effect his Astardes, the population.

      @laz kar None of them are just "boring invincible hero" anymore, though. While the Horus Heresy series was WAAAAAAY too long (and mostly not good), we did get expanded stories for each of the primarchs to supplement. Plus the Solar War series, and the individual primarch books. Each has rich, deep personalities, internal conflicts aplenty, and awkward interactions where they know what it's like to feel like a human, while dealing with the fact that they are obviously much more than that (while also being 12 foot tall supermen).

    Guilliman is behaving the way the emperor should have. If he taught his sons that humanity is what makes the emperium the best in the universe and the importance of compassion and humility I don't think the heresy would have happened. A true leader aquires his subordinates loyalty with respect, not with the fear of an iron fist. Love and respect when you can, merciless exterminatis when given no other choice.

      I'm getting sick and tired of people saying the Emperor didn't love his sons, or that he lacked compassion. The Emperor DID love his sons, in fact he loved them more than anything. He just had a grand, pre-determined destiny for his sons, it doesn't mean he saw them as simply tools or weapons. It's pretty damn obvious in the Emperor's last battle with Horus that the Emperor, even after everything Horus had done, couldn't help but hold back, which caused him to be mortally wounded to begin with. If he saw Horus simply as a weapon or a tool he wouldn't have held back, and he would still be alive.
      The Emperor had compassion. He just knew what needed to be done to create and maintain the glory of the Imperium. You cannot reunite a million worlds with words. The Horus Heresy happened not because the Emperor failed in any way, or because he lacked compassion (he didn't). The Horus Heresy happened because the Primarchs were human, and just as susceptible to persuasion as a mere mortal. Horus truly believed what he was doing was right; that's how chaos corrupts and takes over the mind.

    • @johnkim5718
      @johnkim5718 Před 4 lety +20

      @@ReconCrusader
      I don't believe the Emperor's soul was split into hundreds of fragments, but regardless sitting on a throne for 10000 years keeping a portal closed probably will make anyone go insane, only the Emperor has the willpower and mental strength to have done it for so long. One can imagine you'd probably lose any semblance of compassion or empathy, as no suffering is as great as the suffering in which the Emperor endures.

    • @johnkim5718
      @johnkim5718 Před 4 lety +28

      40k is not a re-imaged bible story. I don't know where you're getting that from. The Emperor didn't manipulate everyone so that he could ascend to becoming a god. He already was a god before ever coming to the fore of mankind. The fact is, NOBODY knows what the Emperor's true intentions and motivations are. It is now known, from Aaron Dembski-Bowden : "Everyone whom has the chance to be in the Emperor's presence perceives something different, based on their own experiences and expectations. Nothing He ever says should be taken at face value, since it is 'warped' by the narrator's interpretation."
      The Emperor's massive psychic power (the same power that makes all humans compelled to kneel before him) affects how anyone perceives any interaction they have with the Emperor. Whatever they hear or believe they hear is warped. When the Emperor speaks with the Custodes, he talks about the Primarchs like they are his experiments, not his sons, because the Custodes believe they are the Emperor's true companions, those who stood by him the longest and the ones closest to him. And yet, when the Emperor speaks with the Primarchs, he often speaks with love and compassion.
      We can only deduce the Emperor's intentions from his actions alone. He already is/was the single most powerful entity in the WH40k universe; your argument that he did it for power holds no water because he already had great power, and could obtain even greater power without even requiring to do all that he did for humanity. What did his supposed quest for power do for him? He now sits on a throne forever concentrated on keeping a portal closed. Why does he suffer for eternity, to keep humanity alive, when he could let the portal open, kill himself, and be resurrected?

    I distinctly remember the very first time I was introduced to the concept of the primarchs was from Ventris' perspective. He had just returned to Macragge and had decided to walk the halls where Guilliman was kept in stasis. Commenting on how he seemed as if he could wake at any moment. I read that nearly 15 years ago.

    I was completely stunned when Ventriss was unable to stand in Guillimans presence. I mean that little line of text really helped me to try and imagine, to comprehend, what Ventriss was feeling… to be in the almost divine presence of his primarch was so overwhelming for this venerated and veteran space marine he was “unable” to stand or even look at Guilliman. That is extremely telling to the sheer force of will Guilliman exudes. Imagine what his presence can do to mortal men! Just a really cool insight into how strong the aura of a primarch is; how so much time has passed since a true loyalist primarch walked the universe.

    I'm 41 and been reading since the now retconned Inquisitor and original Space Marine books.
    Ventris is by far my favourite Ultramarine, and after all he's been through probably one of the most underrated Space Marines in all the lore... he's like a non psychic Grey Knight, what he pulled off against Perterabo's Iron Fairies I think even a veteran Grey Knight would have found difficult.
    This is a rather late message so I doubt you'll ever see it, but maybe looking into the most underrated space marines might be a good topic...Definitely maybe going back to those books might be worth it.

    I just want to comment on one thing. You voiced your surprise that Guilliman approved of Ventris not treating the Codex as a bible.. There is even a 30k short story in which Guilliman tells one of his sons that the Codex should never be treated as a bible, but only a guideline...for if one always adhered to the rules and were unable to adapt one would eventually become predictable and beatable..
    Th primarch also added that not even a great mind such as his could foresee every single possible scenario of war. So the Codex was never intended as a scholarly book and any deviation from it should be punished. It was always intended as a guideline, but leaving the option to adapt and not do everything by the book. Having said that the way the 40k Ultramarines treated the Codex prior to his resurrection (i.e. as a bible as you appropiately put it) is actually a perversion of what the Primarch had intended it to be when he wrote it.

    Uriel was censured if I am correct or at least questioned at length and looked down upon by the higher Counsel. His Captain was of similar character as Uriel and shaped him in the end.
    I respect the Ultramarine's. Sure it lacks the blood thirsty Blood Angel's aspect or the darkness and hidden motives like the 1st Chapter and the stealthy undertakings the Raven Guard excel at. They have suffered but nothing like the son's of Vulkan and the loss of a Primach that the Iron Hands experienced (they still had a 'father' to gaze upon whilst Robute was in stasis).

    A great video, Uriel Ventris meeting Roboute Guilliman. Eeerrrmmm, I would just like to add a little something. Roboute Guilliman coming out of stasis has caused problems for Chapter Master Marneus Calgar. This has caused some friction. To cut a long story short, rather than Calgar fall to darkness, let him join Deathwatch! Chaplain Cassius has had no end of tours with the Watch. Let Calgar take a turn, or take up the Black. Calgar would be a very valuble asset for the Watch.
