The M9 is one of the most talked about locomotives in the industry. Undoubtedly, this Alstom locomotive is one of the most failed locomotives ever imported to our country. At that time these came to this country and were subjected to strong misconceptions by people in various fields.
About 4 years before these were introduced, local and foreign railway experts had said that these engines were not suitable for the country at all. According to their arguments, the RUSTON 12 RK 215 engine, the power engine used here in particular, has never been used for a train engine before and has not been subjected to any quality testing. The RUSTON 12 RK 215 is actually an engine made for marine vessels. (Ruston is a manufacturer of engines (for non-moving equipment) for factories, etc.) and not a manufacturer of engines with experience in areas such as automobiles (moving vehicles, etc.). The 215 engine was developed by Alstom using the Paxman technology after the company's famous and highly successful engine, the Paxman, was originally named Ruston. Without any quality inspection or any test run by the manufacturing company. The reason for this was that the width of the French railways was different from that of the Sri Lankan roads. However, these engines came to Sri Lanka causing a great deal of controversy. In fact, it is a technologically advanced engine and as of this writing 2011, not even India, Asia's leading manufacturer of trains, has run such an advanced engine. This dual cabin engine is almost entirely controlled by an automated computer system controlled by Windows CE, and the driver has a few small joysticks to steer the train. It also has an LCD screen to let the driver know all the details of the engine such as speed. This is a very different method than Also.
Only a few engines that could have been repaired in the country have been repaired and are currently in operation. Repairing other engines has been a problem, as some of their components have been stolen since they were abandoned, making retrieval difficult.
Of these engines, Nos. 866, 870, 872 have been repaired and put into operation with some modifications.
