I am glad Google is embracing more of Chrome OS's roots i.e. Gentoo Linux. They brought back the live boot environment, Linux app support and the ability to install it on a wide range of hardware. Masterful move from Google. I regularly use Linux, and as sad is it is to admit, it is unlikely to be the OS that rivals Microsoft's desktop OS dominance. Chrome OS has already overtaken macOS as the second largest desktop OS by market share, and with this move, they are likely to take more of the market from Microsoft.

Already tried it and here is my review: First and foremost, Chrome OS and Chrome OS Flex are different. Chrome OS Flex is a stripped-down Chrome OS intended only for older hardware. It is based on Neverware's CloudReady platform. Linux support depends on the recentness of hardware and for most of the older hardware without a security chip, it won't work. There is absolutely no Android app support in Chrome OS Flex. Google has clearly mentioned that Android apps would be supported only on the original Chrome OS (OEM-based Chromebooks). So no Android Apps for Chrome Flex. Well, all this means that on your older hardware, this might be as useless as Windows 11 if your goal is to do some productivity tasks.

Using something like Linux Mint, Zorin OS lite or any other lightweight Distro gives the user similar performance, usability and far better feature. Chrome OS Flex is good only for those who have completely switched to browser apps. But can it run offline like other Linux distros, probably not.
