Here is a challenge for you what is there difference between being black and being ghetto?
My Answer: Being ghetto is a style/theme with specific traits while being black is a state of mind that has a vague set of traits.

I’ve been rewatching Static Shock lately myself.
Honestly, I like that Virgil is kind of going over the top to give the dad the benefit of the doubt. I mean Virgil’s not dumb, but at the same time he’s not holding anything against him- as far as he’s concerned Richie’s dads just not thinking straight. My favorite part was him saying “My dad doesn’t like hip hop either, it’s not a black/white thing, it’s an OLD people thing.” I snort at that joke every time.

@@Acacius1992 considering in a reboot they changed Statics origin from being kind of coerced into a gang war that he WASNT aware was going to happen, to being in a Black Lives Matter thing that the cops unleashed the bang baby chemicals on them, I don’t want to imagine…
I was like “the gang war thing was interesting, because Virgil’s excuse was that he DIDNT want to be there.” I mean, his dad alone would have been pissed at him cause they established that his family had been HURT by gang violence with them losing his mom.

I remember when a girl at my school wouldn’t invite me over because she said her dad didn’t like black people. At the time I was just like “oh, okay”. I tried to laugh it off, but I’m glad she just told me straight instead of Richie beating around the bush. Very nice girl, bought gifts back to London for me from her nyc trip, would share music, went to her parties, just …never met her dad. 😅 I wasn’t expecting her to disown her father just to be friends so I just moved on.

For a show that came out in 2000, and a KIDS show at that, to have an animated show with a black lead and be a superhero was revolutionary. To have them do a racism episode in the first season was one of those things that kids didn't think too much about at the time, but the older ones and the adults though about definitely. Thinking about it now, this really was well thought out and executed beautifully.

You would be surprised at how many parents out there were shocked to hear that their kids grew up with this show with these types of topics back in the day. I mean, this is like before/during shows like The Proud Family, where kids shows were becoming brave enough to teach children what is right or wrong.
Another static shock episode I would gladly recommend to you is how the episode handled school bullying and gun problems.

In my early years, I developed a friendship with a Vietnamese peer, Donnie. Our companionship flourished outside the confines of our respective homes; while Donnie frequented my residence, an invitation to his was notably absent. Prompted by my mother's observation of this imbalance, she suggested that I should visit Donnie's home in the spirit of reciprocity.Upon arriving at Donnie's household, an unexpected situation unfolded. His father, upon seeing me, decided against granting me entry. Confused and seeking clarity, Donnie later revealed to me the reasoning behind his father's decision: a prejudiced belief that my African American heritage predisposed me to theft, thus posing a risk to their possessions. In response to this, I expressed to Donnie that such a viewpoint was inherently racist.Despite this initial discord, Donnie devised ways to welcome me into his home covertly. Over time, his father seemed to acquiesce to my presence, not through explicit approval but through his silence. This passive acceptance, though never formally acknowledged, marked a subtle shift in the dynamics of my visits.

There's actually a really important second layer to Richie's comfort with Virgils family compared to his own:
In the comics, Richie (first named Rick Stone) is revealed to be queer. The co-creator of Static and writer/producer of the show confirmed Richie to be gay as well. It adds so much more depth to the story and each characters relationships.

Growing up, I never watched the show, in fact, I never even knew it existed until a few years ago! I think it is a really great show and I hope you're enjoying it as well! Another popular episode that I'm sure a lot of people will recommend that you could review is the episode that focuses on school shootings and bullying called "Jimmy". Two other episodes that you could maybe cover is "Tantrum", which has two separate themes: grief from the death of a parent and the pressure some parents put on their kids to perform well in school, and "Frozen Out", which focuses on homelessness.

This is one of the episodes I loved. I'm a Static Shock fan. I watched it all the time. This is eye opening and a reality. Ignorance is within families and pretty much Virgil and Ritchie dealt with ignorance on both ends. Virgil had to deal with racism by his OWN friend's father. Richie had to deal with growing with an a**hole racist father tearing down his OWN friend. It really made the series have an impact on society. I liked how Virgil's father stepped in and told Ritchie's father how detetrimental his views on black people is toxic. Tony.......this really hit me hard. Keep up the amazing work!!!! 💖

This episode does a WAY better job at tackling racism than shows today, particularly at how Richie's dad is depicted, he's shown as human, whereas today a racist is more likely to be depicted as monster who's irredeemable and is treated as though he should be outcasted. This episode is a prime example how racism SHOULD be fought: taking the high road, setting good examples, valuing the lives of people even if they hate you, etc. Shady Doorags summed it up perfectly in his review of this episode: There will always be people who hate you no matter what, but if one's goal is to get rid of that hatred, it's important to understand that the people who hate you are also human just like you.

So excited if you do more Static Shock in the future, I absolutely adore this show. In a sense, I kind of was the same way where I knew of it as a kid, it was on Kids WB of which I did watch regularly but never paid much mind to Static Shock, not until it was picked up by I believe Disney XD, this was right around the time Toon Disney was changing gears, Jetix had mostly taken over the channel by that point in time anyways. Around the time of the switch, they got a hold of some Warner Bros stuff (which honestly I find funny considering Disney has taken jabs at them in their media in the past such as Megavolt from Darkwing Duck calling out the "you know who brothers") & Static Shock started playing reruns there. I was in high school at the time & needed a distraction from it so I hooked onto Static Shock, couldn't wait for episodes to play on Disney XD since I was too impatient so I watched the full series online & ended up re-watching them as they played on Disney XD.
It was perfect timing, I was old enough to understand the implications of things & really take it all in. There's stuff that absolutely had me bawling, how many times did I re-watch the time travel episode? Far too many, I cried every single time. They've also tackled stuff such as gun violence which Virgil has a strong stance against considering what happened to his mom. It's all such an incredible series for it having come out when it did.
Very excited to see what will be tackled next in Static Shock. I like the Proud Family, grew up watching the original series as it was airing so those videos are fun to watch but I'm more into Static Shock, I'm a fan of the whole teen superhero, has to hide his secret identity from his family sort of thing. Danny Phantom is one of my favorite shows because not only can I relate to Danny in many ways but it's the series that had me realize that I like that stuff. Guess part of why I hooked onto Static Shock so much is because I got into it sometime shortly after my favorite show wrapped up & I just needed something like that in my life.

Because despite Shaun’s actions, Robert clearly sees that he's raise a good, hardworking family. Yet, Shaun has let his prejudices ignore this fact which is why his wife and son have kept quiet about Richie's friends.
Goes to show that Robert does see that there's some kind of good in everyone, even the xenophobic ones.

It’s a shame modern day black shows that tackle racism only want to vilify white people, or be incredibly shallow, hypocritical, and one sided. And the morel is not always well written and put together. But yeah this was a great example of the time and if they want to do an episode on racism, then look back at the show don’t feel what proud family louder and prouder did and saying that white people need to improve and get better. No, everyone needs to improve and do better. So either this or that so raven or smart guy or even fresh Prince of bel air on great examples of racism topics.

As a person with ASD, I understand this type of narrative, it is simply a reaction to people's ignorance (You probably won't try to justify mothers of autistic children, because they actually hurt the children, regardless of whether children with ASD are more difficult or not, but it is a narrative about both websites can be harmful, because harm happens here)
Unfortunately, educating people doesn't work, which is sad, you can only encourage others to rebel against it, but in the heyday of right-wingers, fascists and conservatives, logical arguments no longer work, which is sad because it shows how we have regressed, and every attempt to discuss this type of topics (Even in the same way) results in "Woke" and "Politically correct" texts, so yes, I understand why now cartoon episodes are more dangerous and aggressive on this topic, it was just easier to talk years ago, that "Racism is bad", today when you try it is "Censorship", or "I have freedom of speech", so the gentle translation doesn't work anymore

In many racist theme stories they make it seem like black people are all unitied and don't have internal issues within the community.
