    This definitely "Close Encounters of the Wandering Kind".
    Is fascinating how Perseverance's non-linear path of exploration is exactly downwind from the landing site. More amazing that the special material is even calibrated in size and shape to drift nearly the same speed as Perseverance. The odds of successive encounters have to be astronomical!

    The Sky Crane always freaked me out a bit, after the long journey to Mars, Perseverance had to rely on that exploded view of technology to set it gently on the surface. Still, it worked, before flying off to dispense that Martian ephemera on easy going winds. So strange that it accompanies Percy. Another fine episode.

    • @DUKE_of_RAMBLE
      @DUKE_of_RAMBLE Před 5 měsíci +2

      If memory serves, they went with the sky crane approach, because they had already used it once before, so it was a proven system.
      However, *_any_* system they decide to go with could theoretically develop an issue en route to Mars, causing issues to whatever landing system they go with.

    • @MarsGuy
      @MarsGuy  Před 5 měsíci +4

      Yeah, the Sky Crane does seem a bit freaky. I had the same reaction to the airbag approach used by Spirit and Opportunity (pioneered by Pathfinder).

  • @quantumcat7673
    @quantumcat7673 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Is this the rover stalking the debris or vice versa? After analysing the situation I can conclude that since the rover has the wind in his back and is so easily detectable by the debris and the debris remained always stealthy, the piece is the probable predator or tourist. That's why it stalked the rover.

    The 6 or 7 mB atmospheric pressure that Mars has seems miniscule yet a helicopter can fly and debris can be blown. I suppose it will all be down to pure physics; Pressure = Force over Area and Boyle's Law etc. Ingenuity has to have an incredibly high blade speed and I guess the roving debris would be pretty light, but it never fails to impress.
