- I won't pretend like I didn't grow up with fanfiction, thus including omegaverse. But y'all...omegaverse tiktok is a battle zone and I wasn't prepared to be a soldier.
Sure, I know about knots, I know about heats, but I was not aware of the head canon of losing all your teeth so that you can give birth to an egg, out through your mouth...as a human... I was also not aware that people were getting tattoos of their significant other's bite mark on their neck.
And I would like to confirm for everyone that this did, indeed, put my fyp onto omegaverse tiktok. Perhaps this was a sacrifice I should not have made.

YESSS!!! this! i once found a bakudeku omegaverse fanfic. yes it already sounds traumatizing but trust me it was so good. it was literally such an amazing story, the author wrote their personalities SO well, they wrote the character development EVEN BETTER and there wasn’t a bunch of rapecon like there usually is in omegaverse (cos the universe only knows how much rapecon is used in omegaverse, especially boyxboy..), the punctuation, diction, syntax and description of everything was just delicious-i can’t put into words how good it was, and i’m so upset that i can’t find it anymore..

The omegaverse freaks me out with all the r@pe and toxic, unhealthy or horrible relationships being romanticized (ex: stalker x victim, or straight up family x family) and me being ace definitely doesn’t help since I’ve never (and probably never will) fully read an omegaverse fanfic because of how graphic the sexual scenes are.
So that leads me to wonder: what about the asexuals?? Maybe aromantics too?? My vampire characters aren't necessarily part of the omegaverse stuff but borrows elements from it such as heat cycles, but one of them is ace and still has to deal with heat. There's quite a few vampires out there that are ace as well, and it just sort of depends where on the ace spectrum they land how they handle it.
i honestly get giddy whenever i encounter abo fanfics where the omega is ace. have yet to encounter one where the alpha is ace.
For me, mpreg is fine if they have the proper anatomy to do so. But it veers into body horror alot, like with the egg coming out of the mouth.

Humans however, are constantly able to get impregnated without this “heat cycle” so long as they’ve hit puberty enough to be able to go through their period cycles. And anyways the heat and period cycles can’t even be compared to as they’re drastically different no only a few species from what I know can discharge blood on their heat cycles similar to humans on their period cycles)

The worst thing about that omegaverse manhwa where the omega looks like a child is, that the omega is a fully grown, consenting adult (early 20s by the start of the story I believe) but still acts like a child throughout the whole story (which is 100+ chapters). The whole reason that relationship started in the first place is because the omega tried to hitch the alpha (by stalking him, among other things) because his credit card got cut off by his grandfather (?? I don’t remember the details tbh) to make him stop acting like a child

I once made the mistake of not checking the tags on a fanfic and it was an omegaverse fic. however, it was specified that all alphas have penises, all omegas have vaginas, and betas have both; periods were replaced with a heat cycle and gender was dictated by hormone levels instead of genetalia. i thought that was an interesting interpretation, but the fic went into some weird non-consensual shit and i just had to leave

Only took 10 months!) because a hormone called relaxin (yes, I’m being 1000% serious) is produced in the ovaries and placenta to relax the joints and pelvic bones in preparation for birth! Relaxin also affects the gums and soft pallet, hence the teeth drift!

Thank you for acknowledging transmen who can get pregnant!! I know of quite a few seahorse dads (term for transmen who are/were pregnant, primarily used for those who were post transitioning when becoming pregnant but it’s an open term, for those who aren’t familiar with the concept 🙂) and it is becoming more common for transmen to get pregnant and have kids, which is really difficult in a world that only “allows” women to be pregnant and receive pregnancy care. Being squicked by mpreg isn’t something I’m going to say is inherently transphobic, but there are transphobic ways to discuss the discomfort and most people don’t realize or acknowledge that their words can harm do to a misconception of what parts of omega verse is purely fictional vs which parts are reality for some folks.

There's only one omegaverse story that's so good that it stuck to me for eternity. Like if someone says omegaverse, my mind immediately thinks of that one manga where the omega has been SA'd before and got pregnant (potrayed in a bad light, not in a romanticized/sexualized way). He chose to give birth to his daughter and live as a single father for her, providing her however he can, despite the trauma. And then he meets the absolute most wholesome alpha ever who respects the omega's boundaries. They both get married and they live happily since.

It's a Voltron fanfic but it's really well written and there's a lot more than just the dynamics.

actually "omegaverse-style" tropes have existed in japanese yaoi almost since its inception, with mpreg, heat-cycles, animalistic sex actions and "but i have to so they'll survive" tropes having all been presented in yaoi for eons. it was only after 'star trek' did it leave the niche space, gain a name and abitrary "rules," and become a staple of slash fanfic. this is because the people writing such fanfiction were already fujo/danshi and/or otaku, who followed the yaoi genre and incorporated many of the tropes into fic writing. as such, the omegaverse remains a staple of the yaoi genre, evolving into its own subgenre pretty quickly. the "wholesome" side of omegaverse is new though, with yaoi being a genre of erotica.
(edit: i do have to be a little mean here and talk about why mpreg can be a transphobic trope. it can essentially sexualize and other pregnant trans men, and often, writers use mpreg as a vehicle to feminize and demean trans men, and often the writers are actively transphobic, jumping through several plot-hole creating hoops to explain why their cis male love interest is both cis... and pregnant. this continues the idea that transness is unnatural and undesirable, and that to be a "real man", one must be cis. to keep the pregnant character cis is to claim that trans masculinity is "too close" to being a woman, because that character is used, often, as a self-insert for the cis female writer who uses slash fic or yaoi as a vehicle for her sexual fantasies. another problem with the mpreg trope is that it is often used to heteronormalize queer relationships, by making the one character have the ability to bear children the more feminine one, which anybody can see the problem with. (edit: theheteronormalization of queer relationships is a common thing in the fujo/danshi spaces as an attempt to take the queerness out of their slash fic as a means of homophobia.) as such, being a trans man in this situation makes you the more feminine in your gay relationship, and if you already have stereotypically female anatomy, you "may as well" be a woman, and this loses the "male/male" allure of this fantasy in some writers' minds. i could even go into the reason why (in my opinon) some cis women have mlm sexual fantasies but this comment is already too long lmao)

the basis for all of this is of course transphobic, certain body parts and shit they associate with themselves/femininity too much to imagine them in a mlm context (i'd imagine transgirls' perspective on this would be quite different tbh bc despite the insistence that both characters of the omegaverse romance are gay cis males, the omega is almost always meant as a feminine self-insert, so seeing a context in which acting femme and being "sweetie" instead of "buddy" all the hile having a penis is considered good and normal and desirable can be really nice)
also this feminine man (i'm saying omegas but in a lot of yaoi subgenres there's this submissive small thin flexible soft and naive crybaby situation that's like officially a man but written like a disturbing woman child) trope i have two things to say about: on the one hand, it only works as a narrative tool if you forget about gender theory entirely and go back to essentialism bc clearly in these narratives the only thing that defines whether a character is a man or a woman (the two options) is genitalia. on the other hand, these weird problematic ass super femme boys are a very efficient tool for readers to explore their own gender,,, or at least were a few years back (it's stupid but,,, wait, the way you act in bed doesn't have to be defined by whether or not you have penis? groundbreaking. why do i relate to these little bitches. oh wait i'm non-binary) the pipeline is real

They are literally cis in their society and depending on the source, their gender and abo status combine. Feminine typical traits including caring and child rearing so it's probably why they often have the more "feminine" one get pregnant. I also don't understand how you're saying it's bad for them to be too feminine and basically be a woman to the writer but the writer also isn't pleased by it. Could you explain?

Still this isn't about trans people at all even if they can be pregnant men. I have the feeling that when Avalon reads about omegaverse, they don't read the manhwa'a and visuals but instead the words. Poor soul, these must have been truly traumatic for the first introduction. Just clear up the "that is literally a child and the baby is yassified" (which I absolutely died at btw), the omega in those kinds of visuals are depicted as small, feeble, weak, short, those kinds of things but I assure you he was NOT a child at all. And the baby was a toddler and did not have on makeup, its just the artists art style.
It’s really easy to find good A/B/O fics on A03 because of the tag system, but still sometimes I read one and immediately get the ick and get my ass outta there.
As much as I love this genre (mainly in webtoons and the like bc fanfics scare me) it has both good and bad facets to it as others in the foments have mentioned. It’s either the best or worst thing you’ll ever read. You can sometimes find that in between but it’s rare. Usually you see in BL and every now and again you can find one from GL.

This is kind of encouraging me to start working on an idea I've had that subverts a lot of the tropes by introducing fresh new gender dynamics that you never really see, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I feel like my ideas would be very affirming to some, but I also worry that they could run rampant in ways I'd never expect.
