    We feed a mix of fermented grain to our chickens and they LOVE IT. It has made a huge difference in the feed costs, as well as the growth of our chicks. PHENOMENAL roosters. We are looking forward to seeing the difference in the final product this autumn when we process them.

    I live in Texas and during the colder months I add a cup of apple cider vinegar to a 5 gallon bucket of grain to help begin fermentation of my grains for chickens

      I also use apple cider vinegar and it really helps. I only do it in the winter because it gets really hot here in N. E. Jackskonville Florida. My chickens love it and are so healthy! I started doing this after I lost many of my sweet chicken from a serious yeast infection. I had to heal some of my girls with Nystatin before I knew I can keep them healthy with fermented feed!

    Only difference we do is we dont cover tightly. We only cover with a plywood. Been doing it for years. My dad was brought up feeding all the farm animals on fermented feed. Even chickens rather have it dermented. When we run out for any reason and have to feed the grain dry the animals usualy dont eat it right off they look all lost looking and waiting for the fermented.
    We also only get whole grains and mix our own feed. If you drill a few drain holes at the bottom of a barrel and put a peice of cardboard as a filter at the bottom and fill it 1/2- 2/3 full and pour a pail or 2 of water over the top once a day and leave the barrel in a warm spot in the sun the grain will sprout. When you see the grain on top sprout about 2-3 inches long and the amount in the barrel has increased alot you can either feed it directly as sprouted grain or dump it in a barrel thats not drilled and ferment it we do this as much as we can cause we find that scoup for scoup we get the best bang for our buck by not only fermenting but growing the grain into sprouts. We also noticed that on fermented sprouts and giving the same amount of scoops per pig they tend to get fuller and leave more of the sprouted

      I’m so glad you shared this. I was thinking of sprouting whole grains for our 2 milk cows this winter (which may be pregnant). It would bulk up the feed, make the nutrients more bioavailable to the cows, and increase the protein if allowed to grow grass a few inches. Your method sounds like the way I sprout broccoli, etc. in a canning jar to add to salads or sandwiches. I can do this, thanks!

    Chad why not get a food grade top that has a threaded bung and install an airlock like you would do when brewing?
    That way you would avoid the risk of blowing the top off.

      @@SunnySlopeHomestead Two things I can think of right off the top of my head. The airlock will keep any bad things from getting back int othe drum and no more having to scrape the pigs's food off you shirt after a top comes off with a bang.

    i am new at fermenting , have not tried grains just yet, but have done the blue barrel and fermented left over cabbage from the market, it helps to make your own airlock you will not mess up the barrel

    if you need to kickstart your ferment ever, you can take some of the water from an old ferment and put it in the fresh stuff.

    I would add a P trap style system that release gassed out. Could be as easy a hose with water in the shape of your drain trap.

    You should put a faucet on the barrel with a screen inside to keep from plugging the faucet .to drain the water

    I also used a drywall mixer to mix the water and grain using an electric drill.. or you can use a portable concrete mixer to mix it....
    Our old containers we used to ferment grain in did get pretty rank in the summer we covered them with plywood to keep the flys out....

    Drill a hole and put in a fermentation lock with a rubber stopper. just check the lock for water in it, the lock will let the CO2 out without letting outside air in. Just like making beer or wine. It's how I've fermented my grain in the past when I had animals. Their's more just contact me and I'll give you a number.

    Get a good quality brewer’s lactobacillus to inoculate grain and a low temperature alpha amylase to liquify starches.

    i been doing that on a much larger scale, but i add a tin of yest and sugar to each batch, the turkeys, chickens and meat birds also get the same feed, i run some though a big stainless cooker i built moons a go

    If you take a bucket of the already fermented grain you can jump start the ferment on new barrel.

    Is it possible to ferment it too long? Will it start to turn into alcohol after so long? When its about 75% finished, can I just add more feed and water to make the new feed ferment faster? My last question, would it be possible to put an automatic waterer with a float valve inside about 75% of the way down in order to ferment with the lid off? That way the water would always be topped.

    Fermented grains become more soft juicy and easy for digestion. I am write or wrong....

    First off, Really great video. Very well explained and love the time lapse. That blow up! hahaha!
    Second, is there any reason other than maybe not knowing how to, why you wouldn't brew some beer and then ferment the spent grains?
    I know a lot of the sugars are gone after brewing the beer, but you could supplement it with more grains and re-hydrate it all again.
    Well that's what I plan to do anyway, hopefully. If I can find the time :P

    We used to ferment and feed wheat shorts/middlings for hog feed wet fermented feed is best....I always fed wet not nessarly

    What mix of grain is in there? Is this a premixed feed or just straight grains? do you add in vitamin mix? I'm trying to do this with a premix from a feed mill,without soy, so peas oats barley, with or without corn, and then vitamins and mineral premix all done by the feed mill. Any suggestions would help a great deal. I'm new to it all and I have to beat down the feelings of being in over my head everyday.

    Great information. We keep considering doing this but the temp extremes worry us. Wyoming seems to be either freezing or extremely hot most of the year.

      like here in north western Ont. our winders are 40 below, i have a small shed that i heat in winter that holds my stainless tank, in order for it to work it has to fit at lest 72F, below that it stops

      @@120acrewood7 i dont heat with hydro, i use a fuel oil, space heater, one like you see in old farm homes or job site trailers, they dont use any power,, but the trow lots of heat when needed, and the pipes never get dirty, i have to get some how a new building to live in before winter as living like i have the past 14 years freezing cant take it any more at my age, i dont know how yet..

    My pigs go crazy when I pop my kids. I do a minimum of a 3 day ferment (summertime is better) and I mix moringa leaves, duckweed, sweet potato leaves and apple cider vinegar with the mother lastly activated charcoal to control flies & parasites.

    I did the same things you did; the only difference is that my feed is more fine. After a day of soaking my sows don't want to eat it.

    Have you ever thought about putting in a vent on the barrels? Drill a one inch hole in the middle of the top, and cover it with screen. Or you could get all fancy with a vent tube, but I can see that would be considered over the top.

      Try fermenting nappier grass with brewer's mash you can also add bracaria grass

      I know your joking but 40 or so years ago I had a registered FFA gilt and another guy in FFA had the clubs registered boar. Me and my ag teacher took my gilt to be serviced by the boar, he was so damn drunk there was noway we brought them to my house and after a couple of months of sobering up he did the job. A few years later his dad got locked up for making shine he used the spent corn to feed the hogs. The last time I had hogs I fermented my grain for 2 or 3 days worked for me.
