  • Here is the history of schindler in the UK.
1960s - schindler first started in the UK as Platt-Schindler in the 60s. These lifts had pop-in buttons, you can pull the button to cancel your floor, which causes the lift to keep on going not knowing when to stop so it ends up on the last floor.
1970s - schindler made some very nice lifts. and were one of the few companies at the time to make high rise. which you can find at guy's hospital. they dropped the "platt" from their name in 1975. In the late 70s they also made some rather dull lifts, and some grey keighley looking lifts.
1980s / 1990s - Schindler made some VERY nice lifts, far better than the lifts they make today. These were efficient, with very quick levelling, and the doors whizzed shut as soon as you pressed the button - there was no time wasting. Also in the 1990s schindler made a very nice touch sensitive keypad select MRL design of lift, These are very rare.
2000s - Schindler now make a new MRL design of lift. It can come with either round buttons or an updated version of their classic rectangle buttons.
2010s - Schindler have now updated their design of MRL which looks very nice. their now using a keypad select style again. Also Schindler have a design of mid/high rise lift, but it has dull dewhurst buttons - COME ON SCHINDLER YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS.

Schindler was originally a Swiss manufacturer of lift systems. The company was founded in 1874 and since then has expanded to one of the largest elevator manufacturers in Europe.

another big contract in 60s was whitgift centre croydon, and the threepeny piece building croydon, swiss embassy notting hill, then they got so big they had offices in other cities, and we was working all over the country,i worked for schindler 3 times only on away contracts because thats where the cash was. the best paying firm was express because it operated a bonus scheme, but to many risks were being taken chasing bonuses, so they had to stop it.

Schindler didn't start making lifts in the U.S until 1979 when they took over Haughton Elevator Company, then they took over the elevator/escalator division of Westinghouse Electric in 1989

Life is all good until you get stuck in a 2-floor old prototype Schindler 3300 with touch buttons. then you go to your grandparent's retirement village and find a new one with square buttons that was only installed a year ago but has extremely bad levelling and sounds terrible and then door nudge traps you inside ...

When you say "Schindler", you said everything: they are simply the best. The only thing I don't approve is the numeric keypad in a 4 levels lift: it is unusefully (only keys 0, 1, 2 and 3 were enough and made the use more simply); the message " Er" which appears by pressing the other keys could be scary and cause the idea of a system fault.

platt schindlers first big jobs in the 60s was tolworth towers, tom penny was foreman when sober enough, and new scotland yard in 65. we installed the 1st touch sensitive touch pushes at the britania hotel grosvenor square in the main triplex in the foyer in 1968, bobby curtis was foreman there, both foreman were ex otis men as were most of the fitters except me and a few other fitters who were time served but came from different firms.

@harrihealey02 i served an apprentiship when i left school, it was for 5 years, but i was on the tools when i was 19, if you do get on a firm go on repairs or maintenance, construction used to be hard graft but with all the new technology out today it makes things sound easier. best of luck mate.

@harrihealey02 yes my brother was afitter on marriot and scott, and i took a written test and passed, and then i began my apprentiship, had to spend a lot of time at college, and the rest on sites, in those days you had to learn quick because usually you worked as a cheap version of a fitters mate, and there was no health and safety brigade, it was very dangerous.

2:59 there's an orange one like this where I used to live years ago. It usually gave that Err thing and the red number dissapeared when happened. Luckily we always got out of there because another person called the elevator so we were able to always get out. These elevators are shit.
