    Armada is the best Starscream; Animated is the best “traditional” Starscream. Honorable mentions for other good Screamers include Skybound Starscream (so far), Cybertron Starscream, and IDW1 Starscream after Barber and Mairghread got their mitts on him.

      To me, Armada just _isn't Starscream._ Starscream is a treacherous coward who always looks out for himself, and Armada's version is a square peg trying to fit into that round hole

    Here's one idea I just thought up for how to make the Energon Starscream kinda worthwhile. I mean this involves Cybertron being canon to Energon but what can you do?
    Basically Starscream has been brainwashed and has been reinstilled with all the Decepticon ideals of power for power's sake, peace through tyranny, all that jazz. But here's the kicker. Somewhere deep in his battered and crusty old spark, is a beating drum of a fierce and unyielding hatred.
    At first Starscream is lead to believe by Megatron that his anger is for the autobots, but as time goes on, he comes to realise that no matter how much damage he causes, his hatred cannot be supressed. Then he goes and gets captured by the Autobots, and realising how important it would be to have him back on side, they bring in Alexis to try and coax his old memories back. At first it hits dead end after dead end... until Starscream mentions the hatred in his heart.
    Alexis gets the idea to try and explore these feelings of Anger, telling him about all the things Megatron did in the past, before eventually coming to the point where Starscream abandoned them for the Decepticons. Then he has a traumatic flashback to when Megatron beat the snot out of him infront of the troops. And it all comes back full force. Starscream's rage reaches its melting point at not only Megatron humiliating him, but also the stubborn bot's refusal to come to terms with Optimus and nearly risking everything. Starscream realises that he can never be truly free until Megatron and all the other Decepticons are wiped out entirely.
    Alexis has indeed helped Starscream recover his memories, but in the process she has turned Starscream into a bigger monster than even Megatron anticipated. The seeker now believes that its his destiny to end Megatron and become powerful enough to end all wars on Cybertron. But the kicker? He thinks he's doing all this as a favour to Alexis. That by becoming this mad god, he'll be protecting her and all other humans from the atrocities of their race.
    TL:DR, Starscream goes full Anakin Skywalker and vows to dominate both sides to end the war out of a mad desire for peace at all costs.

      I actually think that's a really cool idea, especially if Starscream's vision is to create a paradise for himself and Alexis to live in and love each other for eternity (I need to stop myself from getting too creepy, though to be fair the creepiness is part of Starscream's motivations and is in essence a heavily fictionalized version of the often very creepy relationships between emo frontmen and their fangirls-sort of a meta-commentary on Starscream's fangirls)...Also in a fanfic I am planning I intend to do something very similar with a relationship between Starscream (here based heavily on his Cybertron incarnation though with some similarities to the IDW 2005 version) and Fllay Allster from Gundam SEED (fun fact-her (Ocean) dub voice is the same voice actress as Alexis).

    I think the biggest issue with Animated Screamer is that in the end, he was never a big threat in comparison to Megatron or Lockdown.
    Sure he had some plans but they always backfire spectacularly and while it is funny, he never came off as a character that it was satisfying when he gets blindsided.
    His death in the finale wasn't even him being involved with the fight. It was just him showing up and then getting the fragment ripped from his head. Not really impressive.

    For Movie Starscream
    The games really fix that issue of not feeling like the character,particularly the DS games where he actually feels like Starscream..like scheming behind everyone's backs in the first game,or being actively against Megatron's revival in the 2nd game
    The DS games are awesome,everyone should play them

    There are some valid points against Bay Starscream but I kinda find some of the arguments against him here to be either bad or not well researched. Especially the comments on him not being "powerful" and "threatening" because that just isn't true, especially when you look at the 2007 movie. Ironhide calls him out, "Its Starscream!", with a level of fear and concern that he rarely shows, he takes both Ratchet and Ironhide out of the battle by himself, and he takes out quite a few F-22s no problem and proceeds to blend in with them. All of that shows Starscream as a very capable threat and pretty powerful. I'd even argue that his interaction with Megatron in the 2007 movie showed him in a good light because he didn't seem particularly happy and didn't back down in their brief interaction.
    Now with ROTF and DOTM they made him more cowardly and sniveling but he was still capable for the most part. Yeah he got beat with his own arm but that was brief and by Optimus during the Forrest Battle. Even in DOTM he is shown taking out Ospreys like it is no problem.
    The only thing I'd say that he is missing is the treachery. Obviously a big point to be sure but he has most other qualities of a Starscream, especially in the sequels, and a point could be made that the treachery was there to a degree. Between the still debated scene of if Starscream was one of the F-22s that fired on Megatron to Megatron straight up calling him out in ROTF for leaving him to die. It may not be front and center, which is a missed opportunity, but it is there to a degree.
    I don't know, he may not be one of the best versions of Starscream but I definitely wouldn't call him bad.

    I would argue that IDW's take on Shattered Glass is much closer to the "Mirror, Mirror" idea than the Botcon take. In the Trek episode that inspired the Shattered Glass universe, none of the alternate versions of the characters were a 180 of their main universe counterparts - just their morality was flipped. You never saw "goatee" Spock be an emotionally-driven nutcase, for example.

    My 2 all time favorite Starscream's are Prime and the new Skybound comics. I love Prime because of how weasely and conniving he is. He's only out for himself and his own needs. He also made for a pretty good leader, it was just his men that kinda sucked. And I love Skybound Starscream's ruthlessness. He will crush humans for fun and shot Bumblebee point blank in the face while he was still sleeping. This Starscream is also a pretty good leader as well. I guess I'm just a sucker for when Starscream actually becomes leader.

    I'd have to say my favorite Starscream is the Cyberverse version simply because of how he keeps going bigger with each of his schemes and is so unrepentantly evil while doing so. This is a Starscream who is perfectly willing to sell out his entire universe out of petty spite and never once think that maybe this was all his fault.

    The design was indeed weak, but 07 Starscream did have a very memorable standout scene when he's taking down army jets, I still really like that, as well as overall how they animated him in other scenes. He pretty much had no character in the first movie, but I grew up with the DS Decepticon tie-in game, where they fleshed him out and showed him as a leader during Megatron's absence. So basically, yeah the movie character was nothing, but I still have a soft spot for the dorito.

    My top five Starscreams are:
    5. Armada-A great new take on the character.
    4. G1-The foundation for the character, and a great one.
    3. Cyberverse-He was so entertaining, seeing him continuously gaining different powers.
    2. Prime-The funniest version, and his whole character arc of re-joining Megatron was interesting, but underdeveloped.
    1. Animated-I love the design, voice, and his always trying to takeover with his crazy plans and cunning. You said it was lame that they didn't do anything new, but I liked that. He was the one character that stayed true. Besides, he fit Animated really well.

    I disagree about Bayverse Starscream being interchangeable. The ONLY thing he doesn't have in common with G1 is betraying Megatron, and his design. Otherwise, Starscream has almost ALWAYS had his ass handed to him. ESPECIALLY with getting hit with his own arm. You telling me G1 Starscream never was humiliated? Nor was he ever beaten up by Optimus Prime? Cowardly is a HEAVY character trait of Starscream.

    The only notable thing about the Animated Starscream is that he was technically undead for most of the series. Early on he is "killed" but is kept alive by a small fragment of the allspark embedded in his head, which doesn't make him stronger but allows him to survive pretty much everything. Well, there is one other interesting thing where he uses some stolen protoforms to make clones of himself, which is that universe's version of the Seekers, but it's pretty reductive since they're all "Starscream with one trait maxed out," so we get the pathological liar, the coward, the suck up, the egomaniac, and...girl. Frankly that girl, Slipstream is the most interesting version of Starscream on that show, so much so that she managed to break out into other fictions.

    • @DaPopeANata
      @DaPopeANata Před 6 měsíci +1

      Another interesting note is he was technically one of the more effective Starscreams as far as coup attempts go. His first on screen power grab goes off without a hitch, leaving Megatron offline and presumed dead for 50 years. Without Sari's key inadvertently reactivating Megs who knows how long Starscream could have stayed in power.
      And then all of that ultimately leads into yet another stark contrast between the Animated and G1 Megatron's when we finally see Meg's reaction to said coup attempt. The G1 version always let Starscream stick around, enabling multiple attempted power grabs, waiting until becoming Galvatron to finally attempt to permanently get rid of him. Animated Megs went for the kill as soon as he got the chance.

    If they wanted to make a "heroic" or "good guy" Starscream, I could imagine him being concerned that Megatron is losing sight of their goals of bringing glory and prosperity to Cybertron, and that the Decepticon leader is hyper-fixating on conquering Earth just to spite Optimus, when there are plenty of other worlds they could take over.
    Of course, whenever Starscream tries to get Megatron to see the light, he'd get rebuffed (sometimes violently). This would lead him to:
    1) Challenge Megatron for leadership of the Deceptiocons, backed by likeminded friends of his, in the hopes he can steer them back to their original of bringing glory to Cybertron by conquering other worlds.
    2) Split off and form his own Decepticon sub-faction, again backed by likeminded followers.
    3) Provide valuable intel to the Autobots, in the hopes they can turn the tide of the war in their favor and get Megatron off of Earth.
    4) Join the Autobots, realizing that the Decepticons can only be saved if Megatron is destroyed, and he'd rather fight on the winning side.

    In defense of Animated Starscream:
    He achieved what every other version of the character wanted in TEN MINUTES. Then everyone left him alone for fifty years to scour the galaxy for the Allspark. Even after he got power, he didn't get as much -fear- respect as Megatron did, so Scream never learned anything or grow from this. Ofc he would be the same.

    The truly daft thing about the Machinima Starscream is that he was... APPARENTLY (because this was never shown) a GOOD LEADER. Why the fuck would someone who has everything, including a comfortable lifestyle, and who is actually doing a good job, ever make another grab for power? If they wanted to do it right, they should give him motive. And they just didn't.

  • @Arthus850
    @Arthus850 Před 6 měsíci

    Regarding your comment about Machinima Starscream, I can actually see his power grab happening and being completely in character. You’re right that it wasn’t presented well, but you have to remember that greed has no limit. They want something, but once they have it, they’ll want more. Your goal could be to become president, then you become president, but then it doesn’t feel like it’s enough, so you become a king, who has more power than a president, but then that isn’t enough, so you become ruler of the planet? But then that’s not enough, so you become ruler of several planets, but then that’s not enough, so you become God, but then that’s not enough, etc etc. If your greed makes it so you’re not enough without what you want, then you’ll never be enough once you have it.
    Granted, as you said, he just needed to do nothing and he could have achieved all that without much risk to himself, which is something I can see Cybertron Starscream do, but I digress.

    You’re wrong about Animated Starscream not being special. Unlike other depictions who do have the immortal spark trait, Animated explores a different route where Starscream seems to be injected or hit by an All-Spark shard making him immortal, but he returns normal every time, not just a ghost. Oh and also, his clones or, whatever…

  • @gabrielpeixoto812
    @gabrielpeixoto812 Před 6 měsíci

    I think the biggest disappointment with Movie Starscream is that the expanded universe material and toy bios painted a much more interesting character: someone who views both Megatron and Optimus as too lost in their personal conflict and agendas to care about Cybertron (and with how Prime eventually came to be characterized, he might have a point) and tries to supplant them both, not realising he's becoming as corrupt and power-hungry as he thinks they are...and NONE of that is seen in the movies. Instead we get a snivelling, cowardly toady whose "treachery" is more implied than shown.
    As for Prime Wars Starscream, I dislike him for a different reason: I can totally see him making a power grab to be the sole ruler of Cybertron despite already having a pretty good position already, some people can be as petty and short-sightedly greedy as that...but not after he spent the entire first series (including an INNER MONOLOGUE where he had NO ONE to lie to besides the audience!) claiming and showing how changed and matured he'd been since actually getting the power he wanted!

    Worst 5. Yeah the comics just added more to him that wasn't there in the original film.
    Best 5. Never forget that he sacrificed himself to convince Galvatron to team up with Optimus to fight Unicron.
    Worst 4. You know. I wouldn't mind seeing a video where you talk about how you would fix Energon in the future.
    Best 4. And to think that another CGI Starscream would go big in the future.
    Worst 3. Oh yes. I remember your video talking about why you don't like IDW's version of Shattered Glass.
    Best 3. No comment.
    Worst 2. Given that he became a floating head like Zordon. I'm just shocked they didn't try to ripoff the ending of Power Rangers In Space with what happened after he was destroyed in that form.
    Best 2. That's indeed an interesting idea.
    Worst 1. Going to admit. I can understand feeling dissapointed given the context of the show. Heck. They TURNED OMEGA SUPREME INTO THE ARK. And remember. This is also the show that gave us new characters like Bulkhead and Lockdown who went on to appear in future Transformers media (Bulkhead in the Aligned continuity & Lockdown in the live action films. Though the less said about the latter. The better)
    Best 1. Understandable.

  • @RialVestro
    @RialVestro Před 6 měsíci

    I have my own good and bad list. I'll do bad first so we end on a good note.
    Movie Starscream... yeah totally agree with that one. There is a scene in the Last Knight where Megatron finds Starscream's head in a junk yard and calls him "my old treacherous friend" before crushing the head and I think everyone had the same reaction... that version of Starscream is never portrayed as treacherous plus it's never explained how his head even ended up there so that scene makes no sense what so ever.
    Bumblebee Movie Starscream... who they called Blitzwing for some reason. They finally made a movie design that actually looks like Starscream and then slapped on the name of entirely different character. His name is never actually said at any point during the movie so I'm still going to count that as Starscream. He doesn't really do much in the movie so I'm literally only including this as a good Starscream solely because the bar for a good live action depiction was set so damn low.

    • @RialVestro
      @RialVestro Před 6 měsíci

      You're going to hate me for this one but... Prime Starscream... hear me out... Steve Blum's acting is fantastic, I fully credit his popularity entirely to that performance. My problem with Prime Starscream is entirely the design. It doesn't look like Starscream. Even if you didn't call him Starscream and made it a new character it's just a terrible design. He's a skinny stick figure of a robot that just isn't intimidating. I avoided his toys because I thought they would snap in half if I just looked at them the wrong way. Soundwave kind of has the same problem except the way Soundwave is depicted handles it a lot better where he isn't really a physical combatant. Soundwave uses the ground bridge as a weapon essentially to avoid physical combat and fights with his intellect rather than physical force. That is much more believable when you're a skinny little robot and have to deal with an enemy who can pack more of a punch. Starscream on the other hand is a physical combatant and I don't understand how he could physically do anything to Cliffjumper when he looks like that punch would into his chest would break his own arm before it'd do anything to the much more solidly built Autobot. I hate that design so much literally the only reason that version of Starscream is even tolerable to me is because of Steve Blum. It also annoyed me towards the end of the series when Starscream just gives up trying to take command and becomes Megatron's loyal servant. I thought that he had some ulterior motive planned and he was faking it but nothing ever came of it so it just felt totally out of character.
      RID2015 Starscream. Take Steve Blum's voice acting put it in a new body that actually looks like the character and make him power hungry again and he's one of the best villains of that entire series. As much as I hate the Prime design, I love the RID design. He's designed as a reference to coronation Starscream from the 86 movie except the should pads and cape is all built in. And it's a brilliant idea to make his wings form the cape. It also does something different with the wings rather than just wear them on his back as wings. This is the perfect example of how to do something different with the design while also playing homage to the original. I wish Prime Starscream had looked like this the entire time. I'd have no problems with this Starscream being the one who killed Cliffjumper. He also actually gets to lead a small group of Decepticons.

      Cyberverse Starscream. Honestly I keep forgetting he was even in that series. He kind of died at one point... I think... I don't remember how maybe he died off screen. I really don't know cause he just didn't do anything memorable until after he comes back from being dead... as a Quintesson. His two other faces by the way are a Velgrox which was introduced in Rescue Bots and a Gray which is just kind of the stereotypical depiction of an alien that's been around since the 60's. Not only is this a bad take on Starscream it's also a bad take on the Quintessons cause I always imagined them as an organic race with cybernetic implants and now this series is portraying them as inter-dimensional beings who cut off the heads of different aliens in each of the universes they visit to create more of their own kind. I don't like it. The most interesting thing about a Starscream should not be linked to a bad take on an entirely different group of characters.
      Earth Spark Starscream... lets talk about how great Steve Blum is some more. Again one of the best Starscream voice actors gets another go at a better designed version of the character. And this is an interesting new take on the character. I can see the classic Starscream still being a part of his history but because this is a series that takes place after the war has ended it allows them to do something new and interesting that we've never seen before.

      G1 Starscream... yeah I'm going to go there and hate on the original Starscream now. His Megatron is a GUN who almost always ends up in his hands. His whole thing is wanting to over throw Megatron and take over as leader of the Decepticons and he has MULTIPLE opportunities to accomplish his goal but instead seems to forget that the gun he's holding is also the guy he wants to kill. Why doesn't he just crush Megatron in his bare hands or at least stick a transformation lock on him so he'll stay stuck in gun mode. G1 Starscream is an idiot! Of course G1 Megatron is also an idiot for trusting Starscream in the first place. He isn't even secretive about his goals like other Starscreams who ACT loyal to Megatron's face but will stab him in the back the first chance they get. No this idiot openly announces his goals CONSTANTLY! There's a few times in the series where Megatron suffered minor injuries and Starscream tried to make a power grab only to quickly get shot down because a minor injury isn't really enough to take Megatron out of power. Again this Starscream is an idiot. The irony is this is also a Starscream who's suppose to be a scientist, he's the one who could have ended the Autobots in the first episode but was stopped from doing so because Megatron is an even bigger idiot than he is. He also created the Combaticons in one of the episodes where he probably came the closest to actually over throwing Megatron in the entire series.
      Animated Starscream, he actually DOES do something new and interesting. For one thing he is the first Starscream to clone himself so all of those clones are technically just other versions of himself. They even literally say in the series that they each make up one aspect of his personality. That is kind of an interesting take on the seekers. Prime Starscream also clones himself but his clones don't really do the whole aspect of his personality thing and are basically exact copies of the original. Furthermore, because this is a series that treats the Transformers like super heroes who all have to have some kind of unique power or ability they actually did give this Starscream more of a reason to have that name. For a long time only Skywarp really had a unique power that fit his name but Animated Starscream has a sonic cannon built into his face that allows him to literally SCREAM so loud that STARS will explode. I also find it rather ironic that Megatron started off the series a severed head for most of season 1 and Starscream only discovered this ability after his own head was severed for most of season 3.

      And another one you're probably going to hate me for... Armada/Energon Starscream. I'm grouping these two together because Energon on his own is not actually a Bad Starscream. His personality is not really what you'd expect but there's actually an good in universe reason for that with him being brain washed and having his memory wiped so he doesn't actually remember who he's suppose to be. And he does get his memory back by the end of the series. And Armada Starscream is not actually a good Starscream. Here's the thing... his entire character arc for these two series is a direct copy of BW Dinobot but done worse. It starts out good because Starscream at the start of Armada does have great potential to be a good character. He could have been better. But then it gets to the part where he fails to over throw Megatron and decides to switch side, just like Dinobot except Starscream never actually switches factions. He does join the Autobots for a while but while wearing Decepticon insignias the entire time. Furthermore the Maximals eventually learn to accept Dinobot as one of their own but the Autobots never fully embrace Starscream which ends him driving him back to the Decepticons. There's also that episode where Starscream randomly becomes Thundercracker for the rest of the series which is just a really lame excuse to sell his repaint. I much prefer when Thundercracker is actually a separate character or at least a clone of Starscream cause at least that's interesting but Thundercracker just being Starscream with a new paint job just feels lazy. And then he dies a heroic death just like Dinobot. Except Dinobot died in combat protecting protohumans from becoming extinct. Starscream basically killed himself just to make a point and stop Optimus and Megatron from fighting which started the whole truce to work together against Unicron. But I think they could have gotten to the truce part without Starscream even needing to die so his death just feels pointless. Then he's brought back from the dead as a memory wiped loyal servant to Megatron just like Dinobot. But Dinobot got a cool new upgraded body that is far more powerful than his original form while Starscream... also got a new body but it actually feels like more of a downgrade from his Armada design. He's not a good Starscream, he's just an inferior Dinobot. This version of Starscream even has a sense of honor just like Dinobot. It's not an interesting new take on Starscream, it's a retelling of Dinobot's character arc in Starscream packaging.
      Cybertron Starscream, the one who came the closest to actually over throwing his Megatron. This is the most powerful Starscream has ever been, it's the only time he's been able to attack Megatron directly and actually be a challenge for his Megatron to take down. If fact Megatron only got the advantage after a power boost from becoming Galvatron. If it wasn't for that power boost Starscream would have won that fight. I also love how the design is basically a homage to the G1 Cybertronian design but with more tech detail. The Unicron Trilogy was really big on molded detail so even if they didn't always have the best articulation they LOOKED really nice. There have been some other takes on the design since then, some good some bad. I love the WfC/FoC version as well but in a different way. I'm a big fan of the design aesthetic of those games. Siege also did a version of it which just feels a lot closer to the G1 cartoon, so much so that I think they could just smooth out the detail on that mold and it'd fit in with the other Origins molds they've done. War Within also did a version of it which was pretty good. But the thing I really like about the Cybertron version is that it's not trying to replicate the same robot mode that the vehicle really should not even be able to turn into. This frees it up to do it's own thing and be a more unique take on Starscream while still being a homage to what came before. I know I've said that a lot whenever I bring up design but that's ultimately always something I look for in a character design is a good balance between doing something different while also keeping the character recognizable.

      Well if we go by the premise that the show happends after the events in the G1 cartoon, which is weird because there were somethings that don't fit, then yeah I can see where are you going
      I know it isn't the same continuity, but still if takes place on an alternate reality from the events of G1 than that means that all the things that the characters did on that series still applies here too

      I don’t think that’s what they’re going for at all. Sure, he’s portrayed sympathetically, but I don’t feel they’re using it as a means to excuse anything Starscream may have done. It’s just a desconstruction of the usual Starscream and Megatron dynamic, showcasing the after effects. Nothing more, nothing less.
      Besides, the show is still young. They’re probably going to expand on what Starscream did later on.

    I love how in TLK when Megatron finds Starscreams head (which is...still surprisingly in tact for being blown up in DOTM, somehow) he says something like "my treacherous friend", which...no, Megatron, I think you've gotten your Starscream mixed up with another one because your Starscream was never like that.
