It's her tenacity and technique that made me a fan(her vulnerability didn't hurt either). I never understand the concept of blind loyalty so don't get me wrong. She's going to have to prove herself. I was happy when she got the loss because she needed the wake up call that you can't land under 30 strikes run the whole fight and be rewarded. Every one has bad performances but I think if you were a fan you should stick it out and watch how she grows from this. He started, then Trevor, then he kept trying to jump back in but Whitman held his ground. This time, you saw, he maximized his TV time in between rounds with trash and Trevor had time to say almost nothing. How has Chael been involved in fighting for this long without knowing the MMA scoring rules?
Aggression beats ring control. Carla's takedown attempts, failed or not, count as aggression, which won her those rounds.
First round should have been scored 10-10, I'm surprised not a single judge scored it that, but the round was dead even. Second round should have been 10-9 for Esparza, as she landed more strikes (4-3) and attempted a takedown. Third round should have been scored 10-10 as well (Rose held the edge on strikes, but Esparza had a stuffed takedown attempt). Fourth round should have been 10-9 for Esparza based on scoring two takedowns. Fifth round was definitely 10-9 for Rose based on striking and the only takedown that had any control time. I'd call it 48-49 for Esparza, but since the judges opted to just coin-toss rounds 1 and 3 rather than give a 10-10, we got a split decision win for Esparza. I still think that the right fighter won in the end.
But that was an awful fight. Personally I'd blame the coaches at least as much as the fighters. Both sets of coaches kept insisting their fighter was doing just fine and was sticking to the game plan throughout the whole fight. Either they were watching a completely different fight, or their game plans were both absolute trash. "Stand back and do nothing" is hardly a game plan to win a title fight, challenger or defender. Normally, "you have to beat the champ to become the champ" holds true, but in Rose's case, you have to actually fight to retain a title. If she'd fought and the rounds were close, I think the judges would have given it to Rose simply because she's the champ, but they're not going to reward timidity, and I half think the majority gave the toss-up rounds to Esparza simply because they were unimpressed with Rose's idea of a "championship defense".

By those 3 steps, there is of course no way to give a draw. As no damages were done, cage control and agressivity, even by a slice, were enough to win the rounds.

Honestly she's probably the most talented girl in the division and that says a lot, but she's not anywhere near the same level in terms of her confidence and mental strength. Wanted to bust people up; didn't want to wear glitter & dance! My dad hated that night. He LOVED Hagler! (Sorry, guys, if I'm misspelling Marvin's name!) People interested in boxing, should watch that contest! Sugar was a purest! Orthodox; ( you're a lefty' Chael 😉! ) But Sugar, I swear, was the most immaculate striker I've ever seen!!!! I think it was so astounding that she did absolutely nothing, that whatever happened behind the scenes must be so big to make her fight the way she did that she's not able to talk about it. Leads me to believe that she was approached by powers larger than ufc to throw the fight. Maybe draftkings paid her off, and she didn't know how to play it out in a way that made it look believable so she just didn't fight. I know that's a crazy conspiracy, but what other factors would lead her NOT to fight in a championship fight, and then LIE about it afterwards..... And Carla act that same way, and then ONLY make a big move at the VERY END, that Rose accepted.. to make sure she got the title.
It's clear as day to me. Only because I've had these suspicions about this sport for a while.

In Adesanya v Romero where almost nothing happened, the justification for Adesanya winning was in the lines of "To be the champ, you have to beat the champ". I felt in that one Adesanya spent most of the fight running away, but the blame by the media and Dana fell almost entirely on Romero. Why as the Rose fight the other way around? I think just because the results are so controversial, they should run it back. Rose has earned the courtesy - Like Chael said, Rose gave the champs she dethroned a second chance.

No even close to the same thing tho. It was Romero who wouldnt engage, izzy landed alot of shots from the outside, one by one, and did enuf to win against an opponent who didnt want to engage. Rose, let her dumb bf lack of confidence in her ability, dictate the whole fight, she let him push his stupid game plan that showed his lack of confidence in her, and ignored the world class coach in her corner, and THAT cost her the fight. Could be right. They didn't give Rose an instant rematch against Andrade, also it would have been 0-2.
However, if it was an instant classic or a 1 hit KO for Carla to win I suspect Rose would be the next title defense with 1 win or just a wait your turn at the very least if not an instant rematch.
The problem is even if Rose and Carla both go on 9-0 win streaks, all dominant, against everybody else in the top 10 and it's 3 years later I doubt many people will want to see them match again because of this fight.
I disagree. I think both of them refused to engage multiple times but that Rose was refusing more. I think Carla was worried about a KO and Rose was worried about a takedown that even when it happened was nothing. Either that or Rose's whole gameplan was to have a nothing fight, hope for 2 rounds to be gifted and then steal the 5th with a takedown.
If you wanted to go by damage Rose probably did more in the 1 round she actually connected, but Carla had more control of the center of the Octagon for most rounds, and more takedowns even if they did nothing. How do you score a fight where almost nothing happened? It's like a basketball game where nobody takes a shot. Whole thing should have been forfeited, belt vacated and Zhang vs. Joanna for the belt.
